Emily Grieson was a woman with a tragic life story. Through the story of A Rose for Emily, the writer, William Faulkner makes symbolic references of Emily's appearance. Through Emily's life transitions and mental disintegration her appearance becomes dilapidated. Judith Fetterley, a feminist writer, also mentions the effects of the time period and what is expected of a woman on Emily's appearance, in her interpretation of the story. In an interview with William Faulkner he also describes the pressure of the time period on Emily. A Rose for Emily tells of family history of insanity. Her father was a mighty overbearing man. The Grierson's held themselves in higher regard than they were worthy of. When Emily was of age, her father would not let any man court her. She was described as a slender woman dressed in white when she was a young woman ready for marriage.Emily shows signs of a mental collapse when her father passed away. She left his body in her house for three days and did not show any sign of grief. The town people did not question her mental capacity because her father was very controlling of her life. Faulkner describes the town people saying, "We did not say she was crazy then. We believed she had to do that. We remembered all the young men her father had driven away and we knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which robbed her, as people will. Emily was sick for a long time after her father's death. She cut her hair short, making her look like a little girl. She was described as looking tragic, yet serene. She was actually thinner than usual."Emily meets Homer Barron and have a romantic relationship. The town people all whisper their opinions of Emily throughout their courtship. They whisper things like, "Poor Emily." The town people all believed that Emily should marry. Emily was living a life pressured by the time period that believed that women were worth as much as the man or she marries. Emily was not married at all. She did many things that made the town people talk and speculate. She bought Arsenic which made the town think she might kill herself. Then, she bought a man's outfit, which made the town believe she was going to marry Homer Barron. She did not do either.

After Homer disappeared, Emily was only seen in her window on occasion. She grew to be fat with a head of gray hair. There was a brief time span of six or seven years that Emily brought herself into the public to give art lessons to young girls. After the girls were grown and stopped the lessons, Emily completely retreated to her house never to be seen again except through the windows. After Emily died, the town discovered the body of Homer Barron in the room prepared for a wedding in the abandoned house. On the pillow next to him, a strand of Emily's gray hair.In A Rose For Emily, there was a quote that suggest Emily would embrace the one person that molded her life thus far; "We knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which robbed her, as people will." Judith Fetterley suggest that Faulkner's descriptions of Emily's appearance was symbolic of Emily becoming her father. She says, "Having been consumed by her father, Emily in turn feeds off Homer Barron, becoming, after his death, suspiciously fat. Or, to put it another way, it is as if, after her father's death, she has reversed his act of incorporating her by incorporating and becoming him, metamorphosed from the slender figure in white to the obese figure in black whose hair is 'a vigorous iron-gray, like the hair of an active man.' She has taken into herself the violence in him which thwarted her and has reenacted it upon Homer Barron."I agree with William Faulkner that Emily deserved a rose. Emily was a victim in her life. She was raised by a strict, overbearing father that would not let her date. In that time period, women married for a good social standing. Emily did not have a lot going for her in her life. She was apart from her family for most of her life. She only knew what her father would allow for her to know. As soon as he died, she was alone. Through the story, the people of the town talk as if they know what is best for Emily, but no one really offers a helping hand. She did not have any guidance. She locked herself in her house while her mind deteriorated. When she met and courted Homer Barron, she still had hope that she would be okay. When Homer did not offer to marry her, she lost her hope. She does not want to be abandoned again, so she kills him and keeps him in her room for the rest of her life. She also had a family history of being crazy. Faulkner writes that her aunt had mental illness. Emily did not have much going for her. If she were to get a jail sentence, it would be a tragic ending to an already tragic story. Emily's life was a jail sentence of sorts. She locked herself away and lived a lonely, depressing life. She was an unfortunate person who suffered from adverse circumstances deserved a rose.

As "Dover Beach" by Matthew Arnold begins, the speaker is standing upon the shore near the white cliffs of Dover, England, while viewing the English Channel and the French shore on the other side. The calm night as described in the first stanza is misleading as what seems to be a peaceful and tranquil world actually contains violent action, represented by the waves crashing down on the beach. The speaker believes the collapsing waves represent the human misery. Our world has become full of this human misery and the speaker means to warn us against this discreet aspect of nature. The speaker reminisces about the earlier times before the world was corrupted and uses symbolism and intricate diction to explain the world as it is now. He does this by recalling good times of the past, and by warning us of the loss of faith and coming of misery. An important aspect of "Dover Beach" is the presence and importance of symbolism. In the beginning of the poem, during the description of the calm sea at night, a light across the channel on the French side "gleams and is gone." In most cases of poetry, it is common for light to represent kindness and hopefulness. The extinguishing of this light symbolizes these good qualities of the world being extinguished. At this point, though, the mood is still quiet and optimistic. The most obvious symbol, however, is the constant reminder of the presence of the sea. The sea seems to represent the entire world. This is shown in both the second and third stanzas when the speaker describes the sea as it was long ago. Since the waves symbolize human misery and characterize the sea, and the sea represents the world, the world is characterized by human misery. The diction in "Dover Beach" gives the poem a noticeably peaceful tone. Words, such as "vast," "full," "tranquil," "calm," and "glimmering," reassure this tone. The tone changes when the diction changes to a rougher, wave-crashing feel. At approximately line seven, the land is described as "moon-blanched," and the waves are illustrated by their "grating roar" and their hostility as they "fling" up onto the beach. In the second stanza, we hear a sound by the "distant northern sea," signifying the seclusion and coldness of the world. In the third stanza, we see the "Sea of Faith" once wrapping the earth like a "bright girdle furled." Here, the speaker proposes that at one point the world embodied faith that secured it like a "girdle furled." The faith almost gone, however, leaves the world with only a "withdrawing" wind-like whisper of faith's past presence. The fourth stanza leaves us with a warning in which we are now, faithless, on a "darkling plain." This plain contrasts with the time when the "Sea of Faith" wrapped the earth "full, and round." The last two lines consist of language such as "confused," "ignorant," "clash" and "night," which leave a dark and unsettling impression on the reader. When a man is on a beautiful beach in Dover, England, he looks over the cliffs at the moon and the ocean and the "night-air" is still and passive. It is ironic that he begins to talk about Sophocles on the Aegean Sea. This, a seemingly random allusion, is important as Sophocles shared the speaker's tragic view of life. The speaker uses visual and auditory images to help the reader understand his fantasy-like setting. He describes the sea as "calm," the tide as "full" and "of pebbles which the waves draw back," these images appealing to the visual sense, while "where the sea meets the moon-blanched land" and "with tremulous cadence slow," appeal to the auditory sense.

Dover Beach flows through four irregularly rhymed sections. Arnolds poem consists of a lack of a distinct structure or rhyme scheme. The first stanza has an ABACDBDCE rhyme scheme and no continuing pattern. The entire structure of the poem begins with true beauty and peace and gradually ends with fake beauty and fake peace. It begins with beautiful scenery and ends with the vision of clashing armies. In other words, our world, at some point, contains both examples of beauty. This poem ends with a warning of the deception of nature in our world. The first six lines of "Dover Beach" are positive. They describe the moonlit English Channel as calm and beautiful, two very common adjectives used in the poem. However the start of the seventh line reveals the stage where waves with noise and violence "fling" themselves upon the beach, carrying with them the "eternal note of sadness." This contrast to the stillness of the open sea serves as a foreshadow of the warning of the deceiving nature of the world. The speaker tells us that the world, which may appear to be "sweet," "beautiful," and "new" actually contains sadness, darkness, violence and hate. The speaker sees a world that has lost its faith, and contains human misery. The last two lines contain the bleak image of chaos and confusion in the world, the actual warning to the reader. We must not be deceived by the beauty and tranquility of nature, while there is hatred and evil present in our world.

Ironic Examples in "The Bet" Irony is the use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning or, A literary style employing such contrasts for humorous or rhetorical effect. In the short story "The Bet" by Anton Chekov, the author uses irony to make the story more capricious in the banker's decision to kill the prisoner rather than pay him, in the prisoner's decision to repudiate the two millions, and in the actual note the prisoner writes. One first example of irony that is used in the short story is when the banker decides to kill the prisoner because he cannot meet the expense of the two million dollars. The night before the lawyer is set to be free, the banker is thinking of the things he could do to demolish the bet. "If I do pay him, it is all over with me I shall be utterly ruined [ . . . ]. The one means of being saved from bankruptcy and disgrace is the death of that man."(Chekov 16)

Custom Essays on The BEt

This is an example of an ironic circumstance because in the beginning of the short story the youthful lawyer states he would rather be imprisoned for life locked behind bars rather than take the death penalty , because he strongly stands by his principle that living even in a state of gloom is better than being deceased. Near the end of the story the banker arranges to murder the lawyer because he would be devastated if he had to give up his last two millions. The whole reason that the BET took place was to prove to the banker that imprisonment was better than the death penalty, and the lawyer was going to be killed in some way or form somehow. The irony in this situation makes the story a lot less predictable and adds suspense because the reader does not know what will happen next. The reader does not know if the banker really is going to kill his prisoner and if he does, how might he do it. The next example of irony in the story is when the young lawyer decides to renounce the two millions. The banker is reading the lawyer's letter the day before the lawyer is set to be free "To prove to you in action how I despise all that you live by, I renounce the two millions of which I once dreamed as of paradise and which I now despise. To deprive myself of the right to the money I shall go out from here five minutes before the time fixed, and so break the compact . . . " (165)The actions taken by the young lawyer to deprive himself of the money five minutes before he was about to receive the two million dollars is extremely ironic. The reader expects the lawyer to hold out for the last hours to make the fifteen tears of confinement complete, but what actually happens is a shock to the reader because after waiting for fifteen years he doe not want the money. This is another example of irony of a situation because the reader does not expect the lawyer to leave the lodge before his time is up. The last example of irony in the story is in the note the prisoner writes to the banker. The banker is reading the prisoner's note about his plans to break the bet five minutes before his the set time "In your books I have flung my self into a bottomless pit, performed miracles, slain, burned towns, preached new religions, conquered whole kingdoms. Your books have given me wisdom. All that the unresting thought of man has created in the ages is compressed into a small compass in my brain. I know that I am wiser than all of you." (165)During the last night, the prisoner is feeling free because of all the knowledge he has gained, while the banker is feeling confined from his thoughts of what he is going to do about giving the last of his money up. Ironically, the roles are reversed, instead of the young lawyer feeling confined, he feels free, and instead of the banker feeling free, he feels confined. What is also ironic about the situation is that the lawyer was never held captive the whole fifteen years. He had books that took him to different places where he experienced different things. Although the young lawyer was kept captive figuratively, his mind cold not be held captive also. The author uses irony in the story when the banker decides to kill the prisoner rather than pay him, when the prisoner decides to renounce the two millions, and when the actual note the prisoner writes contains the truth of how he was able to travel outside of the lodge with the books he read. The first example if irony in the story is when the lawyer decides to kill the banker after the whole reason that the bet took place was to prove to the banker that imprisonment was better than the death penalty. The next example of irony in the story is when the prisoner decides to renounce the two millions after the reader thinks that he will hold out for the last hour to get the two million dollars. The last example of irony in the story is when the banker actually feels free because of the knowledge he as gained by being able to read books and travel places with his imagination, and the banker feels trapped because of the two million dollars he has to pay the lawyer. The author's irony is not always obvious to see, but that does not mean it is not there.

Abortion has been one of the country's most controversial topics. Many people do not understand the cause and effect of not being able to have abortions thus allowing them to take part in unprotected sex. If one sees the constitutional infringement on women by the restriction of abortion, the torment to the unwanted child, and the anguish society has to sustain, then this topic would not be so debatable. All humans are given some inalienable rights, which are guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States. One of those privileges is the right to pursue happiness, which can sometimes be disrupted when a baby is involved. Even if a woman decides to give up her child for adoption, she still has the burden of carrying the fetus for nine months. Having the option to perform an abortion can solve that obstacle. Taking away this right would be invading on a women's constitutional liberty. Abortion is a method of prevention so that mothers can dismiss complicated or unwanted pregnancies. This method is where a doctor steps in to destroy the fetus while still in the mother's womb. Abortions are performed for many. While some parents choose to abort due to financial reasons others are faced with medical difficulties involving either the baby or the mother. A woman may be unable to carry the child or there may be congenital defects and the child would not be able to live after it's birth. Some parents may feel that they would be incapable of caring for the child and often they may assume that having a child would bring negative consequences into their lives. The negative effects of abortion are usually not taken into consideration. Ultimately, the results may actually be worse than the problems that these possible parents began with. These post-abortion effects should be focused on and dealt with in a more considerate manner. Many may feel that the idea of abortion causing psychological problems is a myth, but the research supports this theory. From right after the abortion to several years later, there are severe psychological traumas that can occur. Women may have second thoughts of whether they made the right decision. These feelings may lead to more serious grief responses as well as depression. In some cases, it may lead to serious psychological disorders such as manic-depressive order and post-traumatic stress disorder. In post-abortion syndrome, the symptoms would include depression, guilt, anger, and social or sexual dysfunction. Another combination of feelings women experience after an abortion are shame and anger. The shame comes from looking back at the experience they have just witnessed while the anger is from knowing they were responsible for their shame.

Studies by researchers also conclude that women often have difficulty managing life after an abortion. One study found that 17% of women felt guilt after the procedure and 56% of women experienced a sense of guilt about having an abortion while 6% said they mostly regret the abortion. Sometimes, women have abortions and then carry such guilt with them that when they do want to become pregnant, they are not capable due to the psychological stress associated with guilt. The physical effects after an abortion may happen soon after the abortion or may come years later. In 186, the Supreme Court ruled that women do not need to be informed about the potential health risks or psychological effects of abortion before their abortion. Although the Supreme Court feels this way, there are many side effects, which should be discussed. Intense bleeding is one of the most probable side effects, which usually occurs directly after the abortion procedure. Infection can set in within twenty-four hours of the abortion and can cause severe illness. Severe hemorrhage can happen at the time or directly after the abortion. Seizures are another risk that can occur at the time of the abortion or soon after. Some of the long-term effects directly attribute to abortion and they are reduced fertility and an increased risk for breast cancer. Uncontrollable blood clotting, which has caused many fatalities, can occur at the time of abortion. If an abortion is not handled correctly and the attempt to fix the mistake fails, a hysterectomy may be performed in which the woman's uterus is completely removed. If the psychological and physical side effects of abortion were taken into consideration and discussed more openly within educational institutions and through the media, women may become more informed of the potential risks they are taking. This would lead to an increase in the knowledge of women when making decisions related to an unwanted pregnancy. The general effects of this might decrease the number of abortions, but would surely increase knowledge during the decision-making process. Overall, abortion allows women to retain their constitutional rights, it relieves a suffering child from distress, and it establishes a safer and more peaceful society. On these grounds, abortion should be kept legal, and even encouraged to specific individuals.

Conflict is inevitable in any organization. People are hired to perform for an organization because they are qualified and prepared to do the job. With that qualification and preparation comes a sense of self-confidence. These employees believe that their solutions and ideas are right for solving the problem, and this is where conflict can come in. When several employees have different suggestions for solving a problem, and they all feel as though their suggestion is the best, then how does the company decide which solution is best? Companies must have management that are adept at managing conflict. Our text defines conflict resolution as a situation in which the underlying reasons for a given destructive conflict are eliminated (Schermerhorn, 16, pp.). This paper will discuss the conflict management approaches used at Texas Instruments, and will compare these approaches to my personal conflict management style (based on my conflict management assessment). Texas Instruments is a large company with many employees. This staff is also very diverse in culture, race, gender, and religion. This is a successful recipe for creating conflicts. Due to this, many approaches to conflict management can be seen. The most common indirect approach seen is hierarchical referral. When two employees disagree about something and cannot work it out amongst themselves, they regularly schedule a sit down appointment with a manager. This manager is often empowered to make the decision that will end the conflict. As the text suggests, this method is not always successful in the long term, because the managers are commonly not in touch with the everyday affairs that create the conflict. So this conflict is not really solved, but only patched for a short amount of time, and usually the conflict will cause the manager to "take sides" and document the employee with whom they disagree with as a "problem". With enough documentation, they will eventually remove the employee as their method for ending any reoccurring conflict. There are also some direct conflict management approaches utilized at Texas Instruments. Our text says, "Compromise occurs when each party gives up something of value to the other. As a result of no one getting its full desires, the antecedent conditions for future conflicts are established" (Schermerhorn, 16, pp.). Compromise is stressed by management as the best direct method for conflict resolution. If compromise cannot be found directly between the two employees or groups involved in the conflict, then a manager will act as a mediator to help guide to the compromise. Normally, this method succeeds to resolve most conflicts at Texas Instruments. If compromise still cannot be reached, then it quickly turns into a win-lose conflict. Internal politics dictates that one party will usually be in the favor of the direct manager for one reason or another, such that they will declare the party in favor as the victor in the conflict. Normally, the manager will ensure that the victorious party concedes something to the losing party, so that there is no appearance of "playing favorites" shown, although often it is very clear which side the manager is on. My conflict assessment results (Competing-1, Collaborating-11, Accommodating-, Compromising-8, Avoiding-6) suggest a person who is quite confused! All right, maybe instead of confusion, it just suggests flexibility. My conflict management styles are very dependent on the situation. You will notice that competing and collaborating styles are both running side by side on my assessment. This represents me pretty well. When I am involved in conflict, I regularly feel that my position in the conflict is the strongest and that I will convince my opposition to see things my way. At the same time, I am humble enough to listen to my opposition with an open mind, and I am willing to concede if their argument is viable and will eliminate any damaging conflict. This is a trait that I feel makes me a good match for Texas Instruments. The company has the same stance on reaching compromise that I do. We both understand that conflict can be positive because it can stimulate new ideas, but we also both realize that compromise is ultimately the best method for maintaining a peaceful, productive culture.

I have worked at Texas Instruments now for nearly ten years and there is no doubt that I would not still be there if my philosophy on conflict management was not supported by the company. People who buck the system do not last and are documented out of the company, and most deservedly so. I do not conform to a compromising style to keep my job. I do so because that is the way I am, and I think it has a lot to do with the way I was raised. I was always taught to be confident about everything I do, but to also be sensitive to others, and this is the approach I take in my personal and professional life to this day. John R. Schermerhorn, Jr., Management, 6th ed. (New YorkWiley, 1), p. 41. Used by permission. Please note that this sample paper on Conflict Management Styles is for your review only. Known as one of the most renowned writers of all time, Shakespeare told the universal truth. Emotions are not something that changes over any amount of time. Some emotions like love, hate, revenge, and envy, are key players in most of Shakespeare's plays. Romeo & Juliet was such a successful play that many other movies have imitated the plot such as the very successful "West Side Story". Even though 400 years has past and the world has changed drastically, the emotions and feelings in the play Romeo and Juliet have withstood the test of time. Shakespeares play and the two movies modeled after it(Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story) have many similarities and many differences, but one thing remains constant, the emotions each character will display. Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet is a everlasting play that concentrates on many different emotions. West Side Story is essentially the same play as Romeo and Juliet and was revived in 161. Like Romeo and Juliet, Tony and Maria are of opposite arch enemy families, they fall in love which is forbidden. Maria is Puerto Rican and Tony is Irish. In West Side Story they couldn't possibly get married but they do have a scorching love affair that they try to keep secret. The hate between the two groups (sharks and jets) was modernized as racism and not as many of the main characters die in West Side Story as they do in Romeo and Juliet. One of the major differences in the movies is that Maria doesnt kill herself like Juliet, she is left alone. Another major difference between the movies is that Romeo kills Paris who was going to marry Juliet then he kills himself when he thinks that Juliet is dead. In West Side Story, Tony is killed by Chino (the equivalent of Paris). I believe that the ending to West Side Story is actually worse then the ending to Romeo and Juliet because Juliet kills herself after finding Romeo dead, therefore she doesn't have to go through life without her one true love, unlike Maria whom chooses to live the rest of her life alone knowing that the one she lived for is now gone. One of the main focuses in these movies is that two members of these opposite groups fall in love. Love is something that we can all relate to in one way or another and it will never change over time. As I stated before, in Romeo and Juliet both Romeo and Juliet have such passion for each other that they don't want to live in a world without their soul mate, what kind of world would that be? In West Side Story, Tony and Maria talk of running away with each other and have such an immense love that they have enough faith and love to end the hatred and disgust between their families and friends. . Everyone has felt hate at one time or another in their life. In Romeo and Juliet there was Mercutio and Tybalt and in West Side Story there was Bernardo (Maria's brother) and Riff (Tony's best friend). Because these characters could not see past their blind hatred many others were killed.

Write your Comparison Essay- "Romeo & Juliet" "West Side Story" research paper

The original play of Romeo and Juliet and the new movie are almost exactly alike when concerning the plot but the way the script was written was truly a surprise. When I heard that they were making a movie out of Romeo and Juliet, the play and furthermore Leonardo DeCaprio would star in it I was expecting the worst, but to my disappointment came satisfaction. The movie was taken to scenery of recent times but, the dialogue was precisely from the actual play. One major difference in the movie and the play is that at the end of the original play the two families end their feud because of the death of their children but in the new movie it never reaches that level which leaves the viewer with a sad note, at least with the play something good came out of all this sadness and misfortune but in the movie it is only misfortune. Overall the main similarity between the two movies is the experience. You feel happiness and joy when our young loving couples first meet. You feel concern when you find that they are from rival families. You feel hatred when things start to go wrong for our young men. You feel desperation when our ladies cry. And in the end you feel despair when you find that love truly does conquer all but unfortunately not in the way we all hoped it would. I'm sure if it was our decision the rival families in Romeo and Juliet would have mended their wounds and come together to share the love that their children share. And in West Side Story we would definetly keep all the dancing and catchy songs but, they wouldn't be competitive, there would only be an acceptance among themselves. Then again these movies and the play wouldn't be classics if they weren't just the way they are. Therefore, I'll leave the endings up to the writers.

Soon after the outbreak of World War II, Australian women showed that they were determined to contribute to the war effort. Despite this they faced strong opposition from the government and military leaders who were reluctant to allow them into battle zones. Women were mainly trained as nurses, drivers, signallers and motor mechanics. In 1 Australia was still very much a man dominated country. Prejudice against women to undertake men's work ran deeply, women's employment was limited, and their capacity to fight was scarcely recognised. The scale and duration of World War II, together with the pressure from women brought numerous women into the armed forces. So the changes were more the result of necessity rather than a change in attitudes. When the war broke out most men expected women to fulfil their traditional roles of nursing the sick and wounded, caring for people at home, and comforting soldiers on the battle front. Some women were satisfied with this, but others were determined to do more. The Women's National Service was established in 140 to coordinate the many groups of women who wanted a more significant role in the armed forces. They paved the path for women to contribute more widely and significantly to the war.

The royal Australian Navy was reluctant to accept women and The Women's Royal Australian Naval Service faced a lot of opposition before it was established. They were never allowed to go to sea during the war and had to be content mainly with communication work, such as operating telegraph and signal stations, code work and interpreting. Of the armed forces, The Royal Australian Air Force was the least conservative. It gave the lead in recruiting women when it accepted the formation of a Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force. The WAAAF allowed women to carry out duties such as radio communications and mechanical repairs, which left men free for active services. The army went furthest by establishing the Australian Women's Service. This was not an auxiliary body, but one with its own officers and soldiers fully incorporated into the army. The women of the AWAS were trained in transport, communications, maintenance, and would go into battle if Australia was attacked. The peak of female participation in the armed forces was reached, in 144. 18 000 were in the WAAAF (Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force), 1 800 in the WRANS (Women's Royal Australian Naval Service), and 1 700 in the AWAS (Australian Women's Army Service). Australian women contributed significantly to World War II. They showed skill, bravery, determination, and not the least, valuable good humour. Numerous soldiers owed a large debt and if not their lives to women. The system of conscription took away men who were fit and who were not working in the industry that was vital to the war effort. As more men left for active duty, Australian industry suffered a shortage of workers and the government called on women to enter the work force. Women in their thousands, married as well as single, took on work roles that were traditionally men's, and thus they kept Australia's industries running and producing. Women received training in operation machinery and worked in conditions that were very different from their traditional roles as housewives and mothers. By October 14, over half a million women were employed in the industry. Their working hours were long and the workload in war related industries were heavy. Most also had the added responsibility of managing the household and looking after children. As well as factory work, women entered a range of other occupations and became tram conductors, bus drivers, taxi drivers, security guards, mail delivers, meter readers, etc. thousands volunteered for farm work with the land army. Women showed that they could handle all manners of jobs that were outside their traditional zone and many hoped that these roles would continue to be open to them when the war ended. However, there were concerns among trade unions that because women were paid lower wages than men employers would try to keep them after the war and men would lose their jobs. Although women's efforts were acknowledged as being vital to the nation while the men were away, it was clear that they were considered as a reserve labour force and were expected to be housewives and mother again when the men returned. As well as labour shortages in industries and urban areas, Australia farmers found themselves with insufficient workers to keep up food production. To meet this need, the government called on women to join the Australian Women's Land Army. It was established in 14 and over 000 women volunteered over the next three years. They were sent to work in country areas, harvesting cotton and fruit and working in the dairy, sheep and poultry industries. At first farmers thought that women would not cope with the heavy farm work, but soon found they had nothing but praise for the Land Army who proved themselves to be hard working.

Robert Frost Robert Lee Frost, was born on March 6,1874 in San Francisco. Frost spent the first eleven years of his life in San Francisco until the death of his father. He then moved with his mother and sister in Massachusetts near his grandparents. As a young boy Frost played baseball, trapped animals and climbed branches. His mother filled his childhood with the Bible and Shakespeare. Robert first was interested in poetry at Lawrence High School where he wrote his first poem " La Noche Triste, " which was inspired by William H. Prescott. Frost also joined the debating society , played football and was in the head of his class. Because of his excellent performance in high school , he graduated valedictorian with Elinor White( his soon to be wife). Frost then entered in Dartmouth college, but didn't stay for that long because it was to isolated and restless.. He then went back home to take over his mothers eighth-grade class. Although frost was teaching he still made time to write poetry. His first published poem was "My Butterfly An Elegy." He then went to go and find the love of his life Elinor White. Elinor had moved to New York to go to school . When Elinor came back to Massachusetts, Frost asked her to marry him and she refused and went back to Canton, New York. Convinced that she was the only one for him, he engaged in an printer and two leather- bound , gold stamped copies of Twilight, each containing five of his poems., and then caught the train to Canton and went to Elinor's house and knocked on the door, and handed her his gift.. She gave him an unfriendly reception, and Frost was heart broken. Full of pain and feeling crazed, Frost set out to punish Elionor, and make her feel relent. He did all this by going to the Dismal Swamp in Virginia, but on November 0, he found himself back at home in Lawrence Soon after he got back he became a reporter, then returned teaching. Elinor then finished college and was working as a teacher at Frost's mother school..Frost kept trying to get with Elinor and before you know it on December 1,185 they were married ansd had their first son Elliot. After everything seemed to be going good, Frost went back to school at Harvard in hope of becoming a teacher in Latin and Greek.even though it seemed everything was going great, trouble wasn't far behind. Frost had a disease called tuberculosis that limited him from a lot of activites, and his mother was becoming very ill and too top it all off his wife was pregnant, and also his three- year old son Elliot was ill and soon passed away. All these distractions caused Frost to leave Harvard.Elinor gave birth to a beautiful baby girl by the name of Lesley. By this time they were forced to move out of their home in Lawrence and move to New Hampshire.During this process Frost's mother passed in 100 and also his greatest supporter his grandfather died in 101. Frost was pressed for money so he found a job at local school where he worked part time. He felt that that wasn't enough and wanted to move to England to further pursue his career in writing and poetry.Within the first two-months of his arrival, in11 he published his first book of poetry called A Boy's Will at the age of twenty-three.Frost then moved his family 100 miles northwest of London to an ancient cottage near Dymock. In England Frost had a very firm reputation for his poetry, but by 114 finances caught up with him amd forced him to move back to the United States. Even though things looked kind of cloudy Frost never gave up and kept on trying. Frost's move to Amherst in 117 , brought him closer to his goal by having a job teaching whatever subjects he wanted to for the rest of his life. In 10 Frost won a Pultzer Prize for collected poems, and also many others such as the Charles Eliot Norton Professorship of Poetry at Harvard.Frost was on the top of his game as far as his career went in writing and poetry. But the most devastating thing happened, Elinor dies in 18, and just four- years before he put his daughter Majorie to rest.Frost felt that his while world was crumbling before his very eyes.Through all the suffering and pain Frost still managed to put out four new books in the 140's.He published A Witness Tree(14), Masque of Reason(145),Masque of Mercy(147) and Steeple Bush(147).In the last fourteen years of his life Frost was the most highly esteemed American poet of the twentieth century.Frost received fourty-four honary degrees and a host of governments tributes, including birthday greetings frome the Senate, a congressional medal, an appointment as honorary consulant to the Library of Congress, and an invatation from John F. Kennedy to recite a poem at his presidential inauguration..Frost was a very creative poet who used his personal feeling and life experiences to write his poetry. Triage"There is no pattern to who lives and dies in war". Examine the ways in which three characters view war.Every individual has a different opinion or view on war. Some become involved for different reasons; whether it is intentional or forced upon. War often leave different individuals in different mental states, but it is certain that all survivors of war are left with scars of their horrific experiences, such as a death of loved one. It is learning to accept these outcomes that is important. The novel, Triage focuses on war and its affect on different people. Three main characters in this novel challenge conventions by performing a kind of mercy killing. Talzani selects who will live and who will die through the false 'triage' process. Joaquin Morales executed Perez and others for the betterment of society and Mark allows Colin to die because he has no other choice. In affect, these characters are mentally affected from their position in war.

Mark Walsh a war correspondent, who photographs the centres of modern welfare. Mark believed that he is unaffected by the horrific scenes he witnesses. Yet Mark's trauma was generated by too many wars and too many unnecessary deaths during his assignment. Although Mark was able to distance himself from these incidents, the loss of Colin proved to be too much. When Mark returns to New York he realises that his own life has changed forever and suffers a mental breakdown.Dr. Talzani who must decide those to live and who die is a doctor trained in modern medicine in USA. Although Talzani's actions appear shocking and disturbing, it is evident that he does not find this role easy. With few medical resources at his disposal he must decide who lives and who dies in his hospital cave. He is shown to be a compassionate but, in this desperate situation, makes subjective decisions about who will be saved. Talzani attempts to assure Mark that 'there is no pattern to who lives or dies in war'. The 'triage' is merely because his parents 'need to believe there is a system'. In reality 'sometimes he is so tired, or the cave is so dark, he's not even sure of the colours he gives them'; 'some live, some die, that's all'Joaquin Morales who is introduced to Mark by Elena, worked as an unqualified psychotherapist with Franco's traumatised officers. Morales' own experience parallel Mark's, for he, too, is a victim, having lost his entire family in the war. Joaquin, on the other hand, is an innocent victim of war. He did not choose to be at the place and time when war broke out. Unlike Joaquin, Mark denies that he is affected by the horrific scenes of war. Mark Purposely puts himself in the position of War. As a self-styled psychotherapist, Joaquin has also killed. Like Talzani, he has not been traumatised by his actions. But Mark, Talzani and Morales are all shown as having a conscience. Joaquin learns that either he 'accepts this new life' or he dies. He concludes, as Mark must do, that 'you have to turn away from the past. All of us, we have to turn away. It is the hardest thing' to do.Where Joaquin has forgiven himself for his subsequent killings of 'the incurables', Mark still feels guilty for being unable to save his friend Colin. Mark's feelings of guilt are cumulative because he has witnessed other killings in other wars and he feels that, somehow, he might have saved the victims. Joaquin has not allowed his residual feelings of guilt over the execution of Perez and other dangerous individuals to lead to the kind of mental trauma that Mark suffers. Instead, he accepts that his attempts to save 'the incurables' were futile. There is no logic or rationale to explain who lives or dies. This is the most difficult lesson for Mark and the one that causes him the most guilt.Mark must undergo a spiritual journey in his quest for self-awareness. He must accept that suffering is part of life and that the pain of surviving is part of being human, that it is, indeed, his duty to accept the guilt he feels. He comes to understand that it is never possible to have complete control over one's life and that he must accept that scars only ever partially heal. Mark's spiritual quest ends when he learns to 'forget the dead', to 'turn away from the past' and look to the future.

Another strategy is to use relaxation techniques to lower the anxiety with quiet time and muscles relaxation. Relaxation can be attained through deep breathing and learning to coordinate breathing. Another technique used is a warm-up. This lowers the anxiety levels and to become more focused and determined. Also athletes should concentrate on the goals set for that particular task. Task goals provide focus and take the attention away from worrying thoughts. Therefore strategies used to decrease anxiety are - Acknowledging warning signs of increased arousal- Using relaxation skills to lower anxiety, (muscle relaxation, deep breathing.)- Energising techniques, warn-up- Focus on goals set, to direct attention away from worrying or anxious.

It was a beautiful morning. The birds were singing and the sun was shinning. Kelly had just woken up. Kelly got out of bed and put her jogging gear on. As Kelly was about to leave the house for her morning jog, her mother had stopped her and told her to have breakfast otherwise after her jog she might feel really sick. Kelly went into the kitchen and had an apple and a glass of orange juice. After she had eaten she said to her mother that she was going out for a jog in the park. When Kelly was jogging in the park she had seen one of her best friends walking her dog in the park. Kelly ran up to her best friend Amanda. When Kelly was running after Amanda she had called her name out and Amanda turned around and waited for Kelly to reach her. When Kelly reached her they both said hello to each other. Kelly asked Amanda if she was doing anything tonight? But Amanda wasn't doing anything so Kelly asked her if she wanted to go and see a film? Amanda said to Kelly " I will ask my mother and I will call you to tell you if I will came or not. She liked the way she looked and that's how she was going to go to the movies. Kelly took off her new jeans and top and went into her old clothes because Kelly wanted to straighten her hair so she can look nice. Kelly straightened her hair and went into the kitchen so she can eat dinner. Just before Kelly was about to start eating the phone rang and it was Amanda. Amanda said to Kelly that she was allowed to come to the movies tonight and Amanda asked Kelly what film were they going to watch? Kelly really wanted to watch The Sweetest Thing and so did Amanda. Kelly told Amanda that The Sweetest Thing starts at 7.0pm and Amanda said to Kelly I'll meet you at the movie at 7.0 and Kelly was fine with it. Kelly said to Amanda I would ring Jennifer and tell her to meet us there at 7.0. Both Kelly and Amanda were fine with it. So all three of the girls meet at 7.0pm at the movies and they were all excited. All three of the girls went and bought their tickets and also bought something to eat while watching the movie. All three of the girls were really enjoying the film. In the middle of the movie the main actor Roman started talking to Kelly. Kelly thought that was just her imagination until Roman came and sat next to Kelly. Kelly was puzzled she didn't know what to do or say. Kelly asked Roman how did he get here? Roman explained everything to Kelly. Kelly wasn't expecting this but Roman had kissed her on her cheek and then he jumped back into the movie. Kelly was so happy and the other people in the cinema looked very surprised and shocked but Kelly was still very happy. After the movie ended Kelly got out of the cinema with her friends. Jennifer and Amanda couldn't stop asking questions. But Kelly was so happy she wasn't listening. Kelly had called her mother to come and pick her up. When Kelly got home she told her mum everything that happened at the movies even when Roman jumped out of the movie and kissed her, and Kelly told her mother how happy she was. Kelly said to her mum that she would never wash her cheek again.

I went to the Asian produce store looking for an unusual fruit for my essay of observation. After twenty minutes searching in the market, I had seen a lot of different kinds of fruits such as oranges, melons, kiwi, etc., yet none of them were interested me. I was so frustrated and piqued. But waited, there was a tropical fruit, its aroma had burst into my awareness. Durian, indeed, is so unique and very different from other fruits that I can be sure that no other fruits smell so bad and taste so good, as this fascinating one.I got home with the durian in the paper bag. I felt relief because I had at last found it, a fruit that struck my curiosities to observing it. The smell of the outer flesh of the durian is of such an offensive smell. As the subject of striking comparisons, its smell has been compared to the civet, cat, etc. To me its odor was wonderful; it surpassed the fragrance all the other fruits of the world. Nonetheless, I have never paid attention to its texture. Putting the durian on the dining from table, I started looking at it and tried to exam its whole appearance. Indeed, the durian had a very interested pattern. It looks like a rugby ball; the durian was almost in oval shape. If I were to measure the size, I could say it was about eleven inches long with a circumference of twenty-one inches. I noticed its color was brownish-green, like the color of seaweed. The shell covered with thickened spikes. As I touched its gritty skin that gave me a sudden chilled sensation going through my spine. It reminded me of a porcupine, which had very sharp thorns. I wondered if I was daring to hold the fruit on my bare hands, I would be bleeding badly. One hour passed and another hour. I had seen all that I could be seen in that fruit. The work seemed to waste me too much time. I felt a little tired and discomforted. My mind went blank because I could not think any more. "That is it," I insisted. "I finish it." But just a minute before I took the fruit away, an idea had flashed into my thought. I began to look closer to its skin, I noticed the overripe fruit split longitudinal lines, which were faintly visible among the spine. Its hidden innards sudden exhorted my further curiosity. Now it was time to dissect my durian. Because the shell seemed very thick and hard, it made me feel a little anxious. I was not sure how to open it without any help. An experience and strong person might open it with the hands. I, on the other hand, thought of another alternative, that was, by using a knife and a piece of cloth to protect my palms from those sharp thorns.

Custom writing service can write essays on Durian

I placed a stout knife at the apex and cut slowly into the suture lines, which were conspicuous. Pulling them apart with the hands, I realized the skin was not as hard as I firstly imagined. As it opened, its texture was very intriguing me. Underneath its thick, ugly outer grind, there were amazing innards. Each inner chamber contained several large nuggets of satiny ivory-white flesh. I touched its pulps with my bare hands; the cool, soft, creamy flesh came all over my fingers. Its delicious fragrance was very strong and filled up a whole room; and I realized my mouth was full of saliva. I took my first bite, sinking my teeth through its golden, wrinkled outer membrane. I could feel the sensation of the creamy pulp, emitting into my mouth, spreading the most wonderful aroma throughout my taste buds. Wow, my senses somersault. A rich butter like custard highly flavored with almond and a very sweet taste with a touch of bitter gave me the best feeling that was beyond words to describe. And then through the flesh, I could see the seed that was as big as a chestnut. Its color was more dark brown, which reminded me the color of cappuchino coffee, which was my most favorite drink. I dived into it like it was the best thing I had ever tasted. I dispatched that whole durian in very few minutes. The fruit was so delicious that made me addicted to it. The fragrance of this aromatic fruit is also very attractive, and the taste was even far better because it left the same sort of aftertaste as chewing on a whole clove of garlic. I could taste this fruit for days.I had finished observing the fruit. Although, it seemed to take me so much time, nearly three hours, I had learned about the process of gathering and organizing information during the observation. My barriers to this examination were unwilling to spend time and uncertain because of my inertia. I felt discomfort sometimes, when I had to force myself into the situation that I was not so interested, looking at the fruit and extending its details. "Be patient and stay focus." Those were the words that I often said to myself during the examination to prevent boredom . Nevertheless, I had discovered my own device to observe deeply about the fruit. The observing also gave me a skill to find and invent new words. These tips would help me improving my English writing skill. I had exerted myself to study the situation more deeply and carefully before observing. This was the best writing assignment I ever had. I felt more relief and raptured.

A Day at the OfficeIn this paper, I will describe a meeting that took place in a doctor's office. My company, West Coast Radiology, is a single-owner provider of medical services that provides physicians, specialist, and surgeons a wonderful place to send there patients, who have been injured or who other wise need MRI or other diagnostic testing. I am a sales representative for this company. I handle a large territory in Pinellas County. My obligations are to create and develop new marketing plans, but also to manage my sales territory and increase sales on a monthly basis, this is a very competitive field, so I always try to go the extra mile for my boss, and the owner of the company. I recently set up a meeting between the Owner and President of my company, and the Founder and President of a large Medical Center , who was very interested in using our Medical Center, also present were several of the partners and employees of the Medical Company's President, and, of course, myself. In addition a member of my sales team, a rebellious and cocky male who decided to join us without clearing it with me first, not that it matters, team work is always better, but he usually does not work that way so I was a little worried. Was he there to help me or take away my account? This team member hates to be left out of anything and somehow always manages to find out about my meetings, even though, I do excellent work and always think of the clients needs first, in this case doctors. And even though my boss is very happy with my performance and always brags about me in our marketing meetings, still somehow, Joe intimidates me. The meeting was held in the evening, in the conference room of the flagship office of the Medical Centers. The mood was enthusiastic, yet everyone was also tired.

The President of West Coast Radiology started the conversation by introducing everyone, and then preceding to talk about the major marketing project that I had been working on, he then ask me to take over and explain to the President of the Medical Center about my thoughts and ideas. I was nervous but quite self- assured, I had done my homework on the Medical Centers, and felt very confident that the meeting would go well. I focused on the lead prospective client, and when he brought his partners into the discussion, I addressed them specifically, with answers to their questions and patiently waited for their input. I was sitting directly across from the leading client, who seemed to be very pleased with the conversation and all of the sudden this male from my sales team, let's call him "Joe", decides to take over the conversation and even suggested to the prospective client that he would be very interested in executing this plan, he then quickly turned to my boss and whispered to her that she should let him take the lead on this because the clients were all male, and quote " I did not play golf". Of course loud enough for me to overhear, but not loud enough for the Owner to hear, the client seemed a little confused, I quickly regained my composure and finish up the meeting by inviting everyone for dinner and drinks. (Joe continued through out the night to take center stage.) The next day at the office, Joe said hello and congratulated me on the deal, I thanked him and expressed thanks for his help. I asked how he knew about the meeting, I must have looked puzzled; Joe simply laughed and said "know that's my secret".He has a way about him you never know what he's up to but I know that he wants what's best for the company. In outside sales especially medical, golf is really an advantage because a lot ofDoctors enjoy playing; it's a great way to incorporate business and pleasure together. I'm just not very good at it; maybe this is why Joe came into the meeting? Maybe he knew that I might need a little help to close the deal, or maybe, my boss causally mentioned it to him incase they wanted all bases covered. Questions that can only be answered by human studies, this is where Psychology enters the picture. I believe that the study of Psychology would help me to have answers to why Joe is always around. I think that by using the survey method; and by choosing the large group of people instead of one individual, I could then get better answers without bias.I feel as an individual that I have always been free of bias; I look at every human being as my equal, and this has helped me tremendously in my career. ConclusionWhile I am making a very subjective assessment in reality the objective cause and effect was not really to persecute me or pick on me, simply because I was a woman who could not play golf, but Joe by using Critical Thinking and Psychology simply came up with a plan to help me close the deal. The effect was to look out for the company's best interest and close the deal. After reading chapter one in Essentials of Psychology, I re-examined my situation and saw that Joe was extending a hand to form a partnership and as we are all learning at the University of Phoenix; Team work works be

Internet Sourcehttp//www.findarticles.comUSA Today Magazine Jan, 00SUMMARY

This article sums up many of the aspects of retirement as it is today. The article emphasizes the changes in retirement from how it is today, to how it will be for the coming up generation of retirees. When people of our generation retire, they will have to use more of their own money to live off of. Companies are not paying as much and social security benefits are declining. Also, people live longer now. If they retire at age 65, they could live to be 100 years old. That is a lot of years to fund all the activities retired persons like to engage in. Also, jobs are not, as a whole, as physically demanding as they once were. Therefore, people aren't as tired when they retire and are up for doing more traveling and activities. The article talks about hobbies, traveling, returning to school, and volunteer work as examples of things retirees enjoy. It goes on to say that an adult might want to "practice" at retirement by getting started doing some of the hobbies they plan to do when they retire. After that, the article goes into the aspects of making sure they leave money for their children when they die. In the past this was something of great importance. However, the article suggests that since people live longer they may want to be more generous when they are living and let their kids use the money when they are younger and need it more. People who retire in the future, it says, may also want to gradually quit working. That may mean switching to a lower paying career or just gradually cutting back hours. This could help those who retire financially or just because they enjoy a lot of the aspects of working. The last thing the article discusses is that future people retiring will be healthier. Therefore, they will be able to do more things and retirement will be a whole new stage of life. COMPARISON The text also discusses retirement but has some different views that the article. The first difference in the text and the article is that the article begins with stating that retirement is a right of passage through which most elderly pass. It says that retirement affects the individual's status, income, privileges, power, and prestige. Then, it goes on to discuss the different attitudes people have about retirement which the article does not really touch on. The book says that individuals who have a positive attitude toward retirement are those who have a pension waiting for them, are married, have planned for retirement, and have high self-esteem. It also says that few regard work as a privilege. Although the article doesn't right out say that some people do see work as a privilege, it does say that some people find work enjoyable and necessary, and would like to make the retirement process gradual. The text says that people more likely to retire sooner than others are those who are married women, persons in blue-collar or manual labor jobs, and the less educated. The article didn't discuss which types of people would retire sooner. The text also had a section that talked about the "phases" of retirement, which the article didn't have. These phases start with the pre-retirement phase where the individual thinks about and begins separating from coworkers and the job. The next phase is the actual retirement and then a honeymoon period. The honeymoon period, it says, is where people who are physically and financially able, take the vacations they have always wanted. However, the text says they will do this until their money runs out. The article emphasizes, on the other hand, careful planning so they money doesn't run out and people can enjoy vacations throughout retirement. The book also has a section discussing life insurance. The article talks about leaving money for their kids when they die also. Overall, the text discusses retirement as it is for people retired today whereas the article is talking about the changes in retirement and how it will be in the future. CRITIQUE This is a really good article for people to read, especially younger people who are working today. It can give them good ideas for how retirement is going to be and to help them start planning so their retirement will go smoothly. I can see how a lot of things that the article discusses are true for people in my family. My grandpa is seventy years old and still refuses to retire although he doesn't need the money. He is one of those people who enjoy working and it keeps him healthy. However, he is going to start gradually retiring here soon which is one thing the article talked about. My dad is one of those people who will have to have activity once he retires. He will have to plan well for all the golf games he will want to play. The article is right. The retirement process is changing and we need to realize that. We need to plan well and be prepared for many non-working years to fund. Some more research could be done to make this article even more interesting. Maybe some statistics on the amount of money the average retired couple spends on traveling and activities when they retire would be good. Also, a discussion on how retirement differs for single or widowed people as compared to married retirees would be interesting.

Please note that this sample paper on retirement is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on retirement, we are here to assist you. History tells us that since we have been able to write, our humanrace has had the habit of recording historical tales, or stories. Most ofthe first stories were tales of heroic men, scouring their land in search

of some noble prize. These stories are known as epics, and they give us anexcellent idea of the lifestyles and basic thought processes of earlyhumans. Along the lines of these epics are the accounts told in the Bible, especially those in the Old Testament. As with the epics, these legendsgive us some spiritual idea of the beginning of time and the accounts ofearly man. If we compare the stories and characters of the first epic, TheEpic of Gilgamesh, with those of the first chapter of the Bible, Genesis,we not only discover some striking similarities, but also some notabledifferences. If there is one thing that all early accounts revolve around, thatis the idea of a divine being or, in other words, god. Early humans wereextremely religious, holding the belief that their very lives were in thehands of their god. This holds true for both the people of biblical timesas well as those of the epic era. However, even as both groups believed ina supreme being, they harbored different feelings and beliefs about thesubject. In the epic, many gods are mentioned and worshiped, such asNinsun and Shamash. These gods can give birth to mortals, and cancommunicate with these mortals, usually through dreams. In Genesis, thereis mention of only one God, a being that created the earth and skies, aswell as humans and wildlife. This god can also communicate with mortals, either through dream or direct conversation. In both cases, the mortalsworshiped the god(s), but in the epic it seemed that the gods were morelikely to be persuaded by their servants. In Genesis, God remains a fairlystrong, static being who, although unwavering, is fair and good to hisfollowers. The main character in the epic is Gilgamesh. He is an extremelypowerful and beautiful man, created by the gods. He is given human-likequalities such as fear, sorrow, mortality, and thirst for knowledge but allin all he behaves like a god. He fights everything that gets in his wayand sleeps with every woman he desires. It is not until his lone friendand companion, Enkidu, dies that he begins to feel scared. He wants tolive forever, so he sets out to find a means to do so. He soon finds thatimmortality is impossible for, although he was created by gods, he cannotbe one of them. Abraham was an important character in the book of Genesis. UnlikeGilgamesh, he was born a normal human, and grew up in the same way. Godkept in contact with him, telling him that his offspring would be numerous. It was thought that Abrahams wife was barren, so he had a child with herslave, and named it Ishmael. However, Abraham and his wife were visited bysome wise men who told them that she would soon produce a child. ThroughAbrahams faith in God, his wife gave birth to a son, Isaac. At this pointGod was still communicating with Abraham. He told him to sacrifice his sonto him. Having nothing but the utmost faith and reverence for his God,Abraham prepared to do so. At the last second, God stopped him, realizingthat Abraham had passed his test of faith. Both Gilgamesh and Abraham looked to their gods for help andguidance. However, as Abraham regarded his god with awe, Gilgamesh almostexpected his gods to give him guidance. While Abraham lived his life inaccordance to his gods commands, Gilgamesh lived his life in accordance towhat he could and could not tame. Overall, there are some differences between the two tales thatmight be overlooked. In the epic, the common people are content servingtheir gods. They make their offerings and in return they are usuallygranted what they ask for. It appears the same way in Genesis, but on someoccasions we see a different light. It sometimes seems that humans arentcontent with their position under God. The very first instance comes whenAdam and Eve eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. When they dothis, they are immediately given the ability to discern between right andwrong. The reason that they ate of the tree is because they wanted to bemore like their god. Another instance is when the Tower of Babel is built. It was built so that the people could be closer to heaven, maybe even takeit over. In this way, they also wanted to be like god. While every two selections have their differences, some also havesimilarities. In both stories, both tell the tale of the great flood andthe ark. They do have their differences; in the Bible it rained for fortydays, and in the epic only seven. In Genesis, Adam and Eve try to becomegod-like by eating the forbidden fruit. In the epic, Gilgamesh attempts tobe a god by gaining everlasting life. In both cases, neither succeed. The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Book of Genesis are two of theearliest accounts of human civilization. In their own way, they set anexample of how the population of the past lived. They also set guidelinesfor the way that we could live our lives. By reading of the commitmentthat Abraham made and the mistakes that Gilgamesh and Adam made, we canshape our own lives. Through the differences and similarities, bothaccounts hold as much value for the people of today as they did for thepeople who wrote them.
