Ironic Examples in "The Bet" Irony is the use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning or, A literary style employing such contrasts for humorous or rhetorical effect. In the short story "The Bet" by Anton Chekov, the author uses irony to make the story more capricious in the banker's decision to kill the prisoner rather than pay him, in the prisoner's decision to repudiate the two millions, and in the actual note the prisoner writes. One first example of irony that is used in the short story is when the banker decides to kill the prisoner because he cannot meet the expense of the two million dollars. The night before the lawyer is set to be free, the banker is thinking of the things he could do to demolish the bet. "If I do pay him, it is all over with me I shall be utterly ruined [ . . . ]. The one means of being saved from bankruptcy and disgrace is the death of that man."(Chekov 16)

Custom Essays on The BEt

This is an example of an ironic circumstance because in the beginning of the short story the youthful lawyer states he would rather be imprisoned for life locked behind bars rather than take the death penalty , because he strongly stands by his principle that living even in a state of gloom is better than being deceased. Near the end of the story the banker arranges to murder the lawyer because he would be devastated if he had to give up his last two millions. The whole reason that the BET took place was to prove to the banker that imprisonment was better than the death penalty, and the lawyer was going to be killed in some way or form somehow. The irony in this situation makes the story a lot less predictable and adds suspense because the reader does not know what will happen next. The reader does not know if the banker really is going to kill his prisoner and if he does, how might he do it. The next example of irony in the story is when the young lawyer decides to renounce the two millions. The banker is reading the lawyer's letter the day before the lawyer is set to be free "To prove to you in action how I despise all that you live by, I renounce the two millions of which I once dreamed as of paradise and which I now despise. To deprive myself of the right to the money I shall go out from here five minutes before the time fixed, and so break the compact . . . " (165)The actions taken by the young lawyer to deprive himself of the money five minutes before he was about to receive the two million dollars is extremely ironic. The reader expects the lawyer to hold out for the last hours to make the fifteen tears of confinement complete, but what actually happens is a shock to the reader because after waiting for fifteen years he doe not want the money. This is another example of irony of a situation because the reader does not expect the lawyer to leave the lodge before his time is up. The last example of irony in the story is in the note the prisoner writes to the banker. The banker is reading the prisoner's note about his plans to break the bet five minutes before his the set time "In your books I have flung my self into a bottomless pit, performed miracles, slain, burned towns, preached new religions, conquered whole kingdoms. Your books have given me wisdom. All that the unresting thought of man has created in the ages is compressed into a small compass in my brain. I know that I am wiser than all of you." (165)During the last night, the prisoner is feeling free because of all the knowledge he has gained, while the banker is feeling confined from his thoughts of what he is going to do about giving the last of his money up. Ironically, the roles are reversed, instead of the young lawyer feeling confined, he feels free, and instead of the banker feeling free, he feels confined. What is also ironic about the situation is that the lawyer was never held captive the whole fifteen years. He had books that took him to different places where he experienced different things. Although the young lawyer was kept captive figuratively, his mind cold not be held captive also. The author uses irony in the story when the banker decides to kill the prisoner rather than pay him, when the prisoner decides to renounce the two millions, and when the actual note the prisoner writes contains the truth of how he was able to travel outside of the lodge with the books he read. The first example if irony in the story is when the lawyer decides to kill the banker after the whole reason that the bet took place was to prove to the banker that imprisonment was better than the death penalty. The next example of irony in the story is when the prisoner decides to renounce the two millions after the reader thinks that he will hold out for the last hour to get the two million dollars. The last example of irony in the story is when the banker actually feels free because of the knowledge he as gained by being able to read books and travel places with his imagination, and the banker feels trapped because of the two million dollars he has to pay the lawyer. The author's irony is not always obvious to see, but that does not mean it is not there.
