I have always wondered what I wanted to be when I grew up, maybe a lawyer, a designer, or even a CEO of a company. Now that I'm grown up, I'm still asking myself what I want to be. I have gone from an assistant manager of dry cleaner to an assistant manager of a clothing store to a billing specialist for a healthcare provider to now being a receptionist for a university. Instead of working my way up it feels as though I'm going down hill. As I look through the help wanted ads I notice that most companies require several years of experience in a certain position or a degree of some kind. I wondered how someone could gain experience when they have no chance of obtaining the position which leads to going back to school and obtaining a degree in business administration. So now I ask myself "What do I want to achieve as a University of Phoenix student". I want to be able to walk into a company. I will love returning to the school because i can be the best taht i can be. so if youread this page please let it change your life. it has always been a dream to have my own dog house one day. it will be big enough for two chihuahauas. so around 68 square feet should do. not only will my dogs fido and cujo be living in luxury, but they will have cat for dinner one a week. this is great because the doppler radar told me that it is going to rain really bad in the atlantic ocean. go figure. rain in the ocean. who would have thought. it is so awoseme because it is so dry in the ocean. enjoy this and let it be an inspiration to you while you are in the bathroom. good night and may the force be with you. dont have one

I read the dialogue the Apology, written by Plato. In Platos Apology, the dialogue begins with Socrates on trial defending himself against an allegation made by Meletus, a fellow Athenian. Meletus has accused Socrates of corrupting the youth of Athens, by not believing in the Gods of the city-state. Socrates begins his defense by acknowledging that he also has other adversaries from the past and present. He states that their opposition is not a recent phenomenon. These people are ambitious, violent, and numerous; they are continually and convincingly talking about me; they have been filling your ears for a long time with vehement slanders against me (7). Throughout his trial, Socrates addresses the true reason for his bad reputation. He challenges the allegations made against him, and declares that his accusers have not given enough thought to their claims. Socrates also explains why he had never held public office, and gives an overview on the life that he has chosen to live. He proclaims to his fellow Athenians that their obsession with wealth and the material world must never take precedence over the care of the soul. Also Socrates discusses his inevitable sentencing to death, and gives his truthful perception on death and the afterlife. In his trial, Socrates discusses the true reason for his bad reputation. He implies that it had nothing to do with corrupting the youth or being an atheist. Socrates then tells the story of his friend Chairephon, who went to an oracle when they were younger. The oracle told Chairephon that no one is wiser than Socrates. Upon hearing this, Socrates made it his duty to question men with established reputations, who were believed to be the wisest in Athens. Since his youth, Socrates goal was to see if he could find one man truly wiser than him. Politicians, poets, and the ologians were among the many he pursued. Socrates found that after examining their moral values, they were not wise, as they had appeared. In my investigation in the service of the god I found that those who had the highest reputation were nearly the most deficient, while those who were thought to be inferior were more knowledgeable (6). Ultimately, Socrates earned a bad reputation because his scrutiny exposed the mens ignorance. Most importantly, in his trial, Socrates makes a final attempt to reveal to the citizens of Athens that they are corrupting themselves by pursuing material objects and by having no concern for the state of their souls. Socrates constantly challenges the value priorities of his fellow citizens in the attempt to flip their priorities upside down. Socrates believes that people place too much value on wealth, honor, prestige, and the body. He says that these things are of no comparison to the most valuable, eternal, and highest good, the soul. Wealth does not bring about excellence, but excellence makes wealth and everything else good for men, both individually and collectively (). Socrates is saying that wealth is only valuable and worth having if you do something worthwhile with it, that people should use the less valuable, material goods in a way that is inferior with the most valuable good, the soul. Socrates attempts to reveal to the court that the soul is eternal and endures forever.

Socrates belief in the purity and goodness of the soul is truly revealed when he responds to his verdict, which is a sentence to death. He accepts the verdict with composure, as he had anticipated this. Socrates tells the jury that he cannot be harmed by the so-called punishment of death. It is only his physical body that can die, but his true nature is an eternal soul made of purity and goodness. He makes it clear that despite the courts verdict he will not resort to dramatic emotions. He does not do what other humans might do. For instance, pleading for more time or bring his wife and children to court so that the jury will have mercy on him. He says that his death sentence may well be a good thing, and those of us who believe death to be an evil are certainly mistaken. I have convincing proof of this, for it is impossible that my familiar sign did not oppose me if I was not about to do what was right (41).In the conclusion of his trial, Socrates states that a good man cannot be harmed either in life or in death, and that man's affairs are not neglected by the gods (4). Socrates declares that he has led a good life, a life of morality and virtue. He also states that although people have judged him and sentenced him to death, their opinions and verdicts will have no bearing on him once his body has perished. They cannot harm the most pure, true, and everlasting essence of his existence. After reading Plato's account of Socrates defense, the Apology, I was completely blown away by the power of Socrates words and ideas. The reading left me thinking about how I felt regarding what he had said about virtue, truth and the quest for both. The reasons Socrates believed that the unexamined life is not worth living for man. It is my opinion that he is correct in that view. Like many philosophers alive in his time, it was Socrates belief that virtue could only be attained through examination. Only through exploration can you really understand what virtue is, and begin to act virtuously. Understanding, as well as sharing, this information was very important goal to Socrates. The significance of examining and understanding our lives is far greater than one might think. Understanding and comprehending the behavior of friends, as well as of ourselves, enables us to have empathy and compassion for them. And allows us not to stand in judgment, which, in turn, allows us to live the moral and noble lives that Socrates had spoken of. Another belief of Socrates that supports his view is the idea that evil derives from ignorance and the failure to investigate or explore peoples actions. I believe this to be true, also. This idea also supports his beliefs on death. Socrates was not well liked because he explored his ignorance, and was eventually put to death because of it. Marie Curie once said, Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. That could sum up a great deal of Socrates position in the Apology why he was not shaken by death, why he spoke of his relationship with the gods, and possibly even why he felt the unexamined life is not worth living.Throughout this dialogue I have discovered that there are two recognizable themes. One of those themes was death. Socrates attitude towards death is important to the history of philosophy. Socrates had said that death should not be feared, although the actions it may entail, should be resisted and scorned. He first gives the example of Achilleus the warrior, then of himself as a soldier, then of himself as a servant of the gods. There are important differences here though. Achilleus the warrior rushes forward, the soldier stays put with his comrades. Beyond this difference, which he does not mention, Socrates says that the fear of death presupposes a knowledge claim, that one knows it to be evil. Socrates rather says that he has no adequate knowledge of the underworld. Socrates does not practice philosophy as a way of bringing his fellow citizens in line with a superhuman knowledge of the total universe, including the disposition of the soul after death. Such is hidden to Socrates and to all philosophers. In addition to death, ignorance was another theme to the dialogue. Socrates claims to have wisdom. Yet he also claims to know that he is not wise. Socrates tells the story of the oracles saying that no one is wiser than Socrates. Since Socrates knows he is not wise, he at first doubts the oracle and sets out to test it. He first finds someone who appears to be wise from many, and who accepts this attribute, that he too thinks he is wise. Under examination, the supposedly wise man turns out not to be wise. He is revealed as an unwise man. This unveiling of ignorance on the part of the supposedly wise man leads to hatred of Socrates. Socrates then reflects that he is wise, because he does not pretend to a knowledge that he does not possess. In other words, what he is saying is that wisdom lies in acknowledging his own ignorance. After an organized survey of Athens, including the politicians, poets, and craftsmen, Socrates concludes that the oracle was right after all and that human wisdom is worth little or nothing, and that the wisest is one who recognizes this worthlessness. To conclude Socrates was a great man of his time. He proved that he was an intelligent man, that was capable of thinking and speaking for himself and believed that, if we do not occasionally pause and ask questions concerning the meaning of life, the foundation of politics and ethics, and so on, that we are not fully human. If we simply absorb the values and customs of our parents and our culture without ever calling them into question, we are no different than a log, which is floating down a river. The log is being controlled by the forces of nature and has no control over them. To be fully human, we must, at least occasionally, reflect, question, and critically evaluate. This is an essential part of what it means to be human. If we do not do this, we are no different than a non-living thing

"Competing alliances caused the eventual outbreak of World War I"… Do you agree with this statement? Argue your case.Yes the competition between all of the countries in Europe and the alliances that were between them eventually led to the outbreak of WW1. The alliance systems were as follows. The "dual alliance" was between Germany and Austria-Hungary. The idea was that if either Germany or Austria-Hungary were attacked by Russia, one would come to the other's aid. This became the triple alliance when Italy joined with them. The re-insurance treaty was between both Germany and Russia, it promised neutrality if attacked by a third power. It lapsed in 180. The Franco-Russia alliance was a defensive agreement in response to the triple alliance between both France and Russia. The Entente Cordiale was established in 104 between France and Britain giving the French support from British troops and naval fleet. In 107 the Triple Entente was formed with Russia entering into the Entente Cordiale. From the end of the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) in which Prussia defeated France as a part of the process of unifying Germany under Prussian leadership, a system of secret alliances developed in Europe. These alliances eventually split Europe into two hostile sides. Because so many different powers were involved in mutual defence agreements, it involved nearly every country of Europe. Because of the alliances, some powers were forced to support policies and actions followed by their partners, which they didnt really agree with. The secret alliances led to suspicion and the belief that far more secret agreements existed.Buy cheap "Competing alliances caused the eventual outbreak of World War I"… term paper

The competition for colonies was another source of international antagonism. The great powers divided Africa among themselves, established regions of influence in China and sought protectorates elsewhere. Sooner or later the rush to gather new territories was bound to cause disagreements over boundaries of control between the world powers. All the countries within the hostile camps were building large armies and navies during the pre-war years. As a side effect, a class of professional and powerful military officers developed and began to dominate the civil authorities. In addition, before the conflict happened, the armies of each country had drawn up complete plans for mobilization. These plans only awaited the signal to go ahead.Strong feelings of nationalism turned France against Germany and Russia against Austria - Hungary. Speeches (especially in Germany) hastened the war by painting it as the best test for proof of their overall -superiority. These general causes created an atmosphere in Europe, which made war a probability, not a possibility. The event which transformed these underlying problems into a frenzy of hostilities happened in the Balkans. In 111 Germany attempted to block French influence in morocco (a French protectorate), but nationalism in the Balkans provided the spark for war. The Ottoman empire was weakening rapidly. Serbia, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Romania and Greece all wanted to add to their existing territories at Turkish expense. Russia had an interest in the area because of Pan Slavism (links of race, language and religion with Serbia and Bulgaria). Because of these links Russia saw itself as a protector of it's fellow slavs and it had a desire to control the exits from the Black sea. Nationalism of the Balkans posed threat to Austria-Hungary since the Serbs wished to break away. On June 8, 114, Francis Ferdinand (Archduke) of Austria was assassinated while visiting Serbia. At first, it appeared to be another Balkan crisis that might pass without a major disturbance, but a month later, Austria severed relations with Serbia, a move that was only a few days before the outbreak of war. Germany supported Austrias actions, while Russia stepped forward to defend its small Balkan friend. Despite frantic efforts by peacemakers to localize the war, it spread rapidly, involving France, Belgium, and soon Great Britain. As the world looked on, Europe erupted into a mighty war, almost overnight. In conclusion there were many reasons for the outbreak of WW1, but the main reason was the competing alliances between practically all of Europe. If there was trouble between two countries, instead of having a relatively small scale war between the two of them, the whole of Europe was dragged in to fight because of the commitments they made while making the alliances.

Globalization is often seen as offering capital a means of escape from negotiating with organized labour. Mobility of capital and application of new technologies to production have redrawn the balance of power between capital and labour. Capitals power has been enhanced enormously. Massn unemployment, growing insecurity and increased inequality have weakened labours position. The state at the national level, from which labour might hope to gain a modicum of protection from market forces, is seen as losing power and capacity. Without idealizing the role of actually existing states in post-war capitalist societies, gains for labour could be and were made. The standard argument today is that even if states wished or tried to protect their populations from the pressures of global markets they would be unable to deliver. During the earlier period, an economy operating at full employment provided an unprecedented degree of material well-being for most working-class families and made possible the construction, in all Western countries, of a welfare state. Notwithstanding national variations, 1 the welfare state conferred social benefits on the populace to an unprecedented degree. Globalization, which is shorthand for market pressures and investor-power, demands that labour and social conditions be deregulated and left to the market to determine. Keynesian economic doctrines provided the ideological foundation of the full-employment welfare state. The economic foundation for national economic management was provided by the Fordist system of mass production (for mass consumption) which was based on national markets. These functioned in a gradually liberalizing international trading system underpinned by the Bretton Woods system of exchange rates management and international liquidity. The globalization era is -4-

Critics of Kurt Vonnegut are unable to agree on the main theme of his novel, Slaughterhouse Five. Although the novel is satirical, ironical, and extremely wise, it has almost no plot structure, and it is hard to find a constant theme. From the many people that the main character Billy Pilgrim meets, and the places that he takes us to, readers are able to discern that Vonnegut is trying to send the message that there will always be death, there will always be war, and that humans have no control over their own lives. Most of the book is the narrative from Billy Pilgrim, a unique character who has the ability to become "unstuck in time", which means that he can uncontrollably drift from one part of his life to another. The whole book is organized in the same way Billy moves in time. In consists of numerous sections and paragraphs strung together in no chronological order, seemingly at random. The whole narration is written in the past tense, so that the reader cannot identify where the author's starting point is. This aspect of the book is almost identical with the Tralfamadorian type of book "There isn't any particular relationship between all the messages, except that the author has chosen them carefully, so that, when seen all at once, they produce an image of life that is beautiful and suprising and deep. There is no beginning, no middle, no end, no suspense, no moral, no causes, no effects. What we love in our books are the depths of many marvelous moments seen all at one time."

The most often expressed theme of the book seems to be that we, as people, are "bugs in amber". The phrase first appears when Billy is kidnapped by the Tralfamacorian flying saucer "Welcome aboard, Mr. Pilgrim." said the loudspeaker. 'Any questions,?' Billy licked his lips, thought a while, inquired at least 'Why me?' That is a very Earthling question to ask, Mr. Pilgrim. Why you? Why us for that matter? Why anything? Because this moment simply is. Have you ever seen bugs trapped in amber?' 'Yes.' Billy, in fact, had a paperweight in his office which was a blob of polished amber with three lady bugs embedded in it. 'Well, here we are, Mr. Pilgrim, trapped in the amber of this moment. There is no why.' This passage is saying that we, as humans, are physically stuck in this world, that we don't have any choice over what we, mankind as a whole, do and what we head for. The only thing we can do is think about everything, but we cannot affect anything. This idea appears many times throughout the novel. This is one of the examples, when Billy proposes marriage to Valencia "Billy didn't want to marry ugly Valencia. She was one of the symptoms of his disease. He knew he was going crazy when he heard himself proposing marriage to her, when he begged her so take the diamond ring and be his companion for life." This excerpt directly shows that Billy didn't like Valencia very much and that he actually didn't want to marry her. However, he was "stuck in amber". Or, for example, Billy knew the exact time when he would be killed, yet didnt' try to do anything about it. He couldn't have changed it anyway. Another theme may be that Slaughterhouse Five was to show meaning in the absurd. The events in Dresden really are really only the outer layer, hiding a deeper meaning. In the books first chapter, Vonnegut shares a conversation that happened when he informed a friend that he was writing a book about the war "Is it an antiwar book?" "Yes" I said. "I guess" "You know what i say to people when I hear that they are writing an anti-war book?...I say 'why don't you write an anti glacier book instead?'" What he meant was that there would always be wars, that they were as easy to stop as glaciers...and that even if wars didn't keep coming like glaciers, there would still be plain old death. This passage is critical to understanding the novel. Yes, war is terrible because innocents die for no good reason. Yes, it's a shame that Edgar Derby was executed for swiping a teapot. But people die everyday, and they will continue to die, no matter how many anti-war novels are written; besides, is there really a good reason to die? Our existence is finite;death is the only constant. Most people only contemplate this after one of two things has happened. They're either old and close to death, or they have witnessed something terrible, like massive senseless death. After Billy visits Tralfamidore, he seems to fully accept the absurdity of life. He believes that existence is not finite, that we exist in all times, for all time and, given that, there is no reason to fear death. His purpose is to exist, and that is all he has ever done and will ever do. Existence is a Sisyphean tank, an infinite recycling of things already done. The meaning of the book lies deeper than the fact that "war is bad." Pilgrim refuses to accept the idea that there are absurd things in life, because if death can be so senseless then what does that say about life itself? The absurd life is essentially one without meaning and that often ends with a ridiculous death. The firebombing of Dresden, the absurd execution of Edgar Derby, the war itself are all really just means to an end. Billy watches as 100,000 lives are snuffed out, and he cannot help but wonder "why?" Ultimately, he cannot answer that question, because there is no answer. There is no reason why. This ties back in with what the Tralfamidorians taught Billy about death and war. Billy learned many important lessons from the Tralfamidorians. They told him that there will always be wars on Earth, that we, people, are "designed" that way. There might be people striving for eternal peace, but those people must be very naive and probably don't know humankind's nature. We know that wars are bad and we would like to stop them, but we can't because we are merely "stuck in amber". The Tralfamadorinas tell Billy is how Earth is unlike any other planet is its superficial limits of time and it's human beings' belief in free will. The Tralfamadorians say "All time is time. It does not change. It does nt lend itself to warnings or explantions;. It simply is Take it moment by moment, and you will find that we are all...bugs in amber...If I hadn't spent so much time studying Earthling, I wouldn't have any idea what is meant by 'free will.' I've studied many inhabited planets in the universe...Only on earth is their talk of free will. With this statement, it is probable Vonnegut is trying to say that he doesn't believe in free will. Vonnegut describes time, life and the war as unexplainable. The Tralfamadorieans tell Billy that although earth is corrupt, humans can do nothing about it. There are no villains in Slaughterhouse Five, no one to take the blame. That means that the only villain can be "God Himself, or Herself, of Itself, or whatever". God Almighty had to be the one who put us into the amber, who had created us the way we are. In Slaughterhouse's first chapter Vonnegut confesses There are almost no characters in this story, and almost no dramatic confrontations, because most of the people in it are so sick and so much the listless playthings of enormous forces. So even though humans go about their business thinking that they have a free will, Vonnegut preaches that God has absolute control over our lives and their is nothing to be done about it. This brings up another theme of the novel; death is inevitable and that no matter who dies, life still goes on. The phrase "so it goes" recurred 106 times it appears every time anybody dies in the novel, and sustains the circular quality of the book. It enable the book, and Vonnegut's narration to go on. It must have been hard writing a book about death through the eyes of a Tralfamadorinan When a Tralfamadorian sees a corpse, all he thinks is that the dead person is in bad condition in that particular moment, but that the same person is just fine in plenty of other moments. Now, when I myself hear that somebody is dead I simply shrug and say what the Tralfamadorians say about dead people, which is "so it goes". Because of passages like this, many people are able to draw inferences to an almost spiritual quality in the book. The ideas that the Tralfamadorians hold defiantly point to predestination and maybe even a type of eternal life. So what was Vonnegut trying to say to us? That it does not matter what we do in our lives because they will end up the say way regardless? Several people have read the book and come away with that message. Regardless of Vonnegut's intent, his final product was a book about the absurdity of war and death. Someone may live a noble life or be a war hero, but in the end, they will die, and the war will go on. It is futile to try and change the cycle. So it goes.

Dundee star Gavin Rae is determined to avoid writing another chapter in Scotland's hard-luck story after helping secure a place in the Euro 004 play-offs, writes Steven Bell. The 5-year-old was a spectator the last time his country was involved in a play-off, the heroic but ultimately unsuccessful double-header against England in the lead-up to the last European Championships.Though there is no prospect of a clash with the Auld Enemy this time around, the draw will still feature some of Europe's top nations.Said Rae, "We're just delighted to be in it. If we get the wee bit of luck we are hoping for, and avoid the so-called big nations, we'll have a good chance."

Tartan Army foot-soldier Rae remembers well the disappointment of missing out to England four years ago despite winning at the home of English football. He recalled, "I was at the game up here. It wasn't that good for Scotland, we didn't play that well."I remember watching the game down at Wembley and it was outstanding, just amazing to win there. It was the usual hard-luck story, though. Hopefully it won't be like that this time."Despite all the pre-match talk about teenage Manchester United sensation and eventual match-winner Darren Fletcher, it was Rae who took the injured Paul Lambert's place in Saturday's starting eleven. The Aberdonian had an uncomfortable first half wide on the right, but was a different player when Berti Vogts moved him into the heart of the midfield alongside Barry Ferguson."It's what I'm more used to, and I certainly enjoyed the second half more than I did the first," he said.easter bunny went in the tree.Crawford had a header kicked off the line by substitute Deividas Cesnauskis five minutes after the break."I've been lucky enough to score at Easter Road for my country, but I'm still waiting on a Hampden goal."

She walked in from out of the rain on that bleak and gloomy day in December. The holidays were always a terrible time for her, and this one would be no different from the last three. She remember when these times were full of joy and the happy sites and sounds which Christmas would bring, yet this Christmas seemed so much more...more than just depressing, it seemed more like she was at a crossroads of sorts. Later in the evening when she was home watching MTV and listening to some of her favorite Britney Spears CDs, her phone suddenly rang out loud causing her to almost jump out of her thin and anorexic like skin. She was hoping it would be him calling after all these years, but it wasnt. Instead, it was the drug store clerk who called to let her know that her moms prescription had come in and that they could come in and pick it up anytime today if they wanted to. So anyway, she got up and went to the store and picked up the medication and paid for it with her own money that she had worked so hard at McDonalds over the summer to assertain. On her way back from the drug store, she noticed a blue car sitting in her driveway at home when she arrived back there. It was an old car, and one which she felt she had seen quite some time ago. As she walked to the door to open it so she could walk cautiously inside, first she saw her mom and the look on her face, and then as her mom turned her head to the right and towards the living room, her head followed her moms. Her eyesight was clear because she had just gotten a new pair of contact lenses, so she knew what she was seeing was real. She couldnt believe it, and then he spoke. hi Jenny, its nice to see you again. Its been a long time huh? She didnt know whether to be angry at the way he left, or just be happy and give him a hug because she was just so glad to see him. For a moment however, she stood there frozen in time and in her footsteps. When the shock of his arrival finally wore off, she walked up to her mom first and asked her if she and Steve could be alone for a few minutes. Her mom said yes, okay, but to just please be careful. Her mom reminded her that it was Steve who caused her so much hurt and pain and that she should not ever forget the fact that it was him who was responsible for her getting pregnant and the reason why she lost the baby. This weighed heavy on her mind, and he knew it too. Oh yes, he knew it alright. So anyway, they went outside with what surely and truely was going to be a long talk, and when he tried to put his hands around her waist and kiss her on her lips, she stop him at the very last second, and whispered to him, Steve, I have always loved you, but please, before we do this or talk about us getting back together, because I know thats why you are here, please oh please Steve, dont go breaking my heart. Steve knew he couldnt lie to her anymore, so he told her the truth. He looked left and then he looked right, and then tried to hold back the tears and then he suddenly found the strength to look deep into her eyes when right there and then he told her. listen, I need to tell you something, I really love you and have missed you, and I know you have been dreaming about me and about wanting me back in your life and I know how much you want to feel me in your arms again and to make love to you by the fireplace and at the beach, because at night lying in my bed, I can feel your thoughts, I can sense them, and yes, I would be lying if I said I didnt think about you too. But again, like I said earlier, I have something to tell you. I am (he studders and shakes) I am (he does this again at least twice more) I am married now. BUT, I still need to see you, I still need to feel you, and I want us to see each other whenever I can get away from work, the house , the wife and kids, I want us to be the way we used to be. Suddenly she pulls away from him and says, Steve, I cant be your secret lover, I dont want to be the other woman in your life, I am sick of feeling like this, being in love with you and wanting you, and instead, all I have done the past three years if have two abortions because you dont want us to have a baby and other things too which I do not wish to talk about! And I am just not ready to suffer like that anymore. Steve couldnt believe what he was hearing, and as her mother heard the loudness and anger in her voice from inside the house, she walked out from the kitchen to the carport, and asked her if everything was alright. She replied yes mom now please go back inside. And as her mom went back inside, she turned to Steve, but only to see that he was gone. Just like before, he had suddenly vanished and left her again. But this time she was stronger, and wiser, and not about to give in to another abortion because of him. Instead, she turned around and whispered to herself. Dont go breaking my heart and then she spoke out loud. yeah right, Steve, like you really care. Then it started to rain. The End

Emily Grieson was a woman with a tragic life story. Through the story of A Rose for Emily, the writer, William Faulkner makes symbolic references of Emily's appearance. Through Emily's life transitions and mental disintegration her appearance becomes dilapidated. Judith Fetterley, a feminist writer, also mentions the effects of the time period and what is expected of a woman on Emily's appearance, in her interpretation of the story. In an interview with William Faulkner he also describes the pressure of the time period on Emily. A Rose for Emily tells of family history of insanity. Her father was a mighty overbearing man. The Grierson's held themselves in higher regard than they were worthy of. When Emily was of age, her father would not let any man court her. She was described as a slender woman dressed in white when she was a young woman ready for marriage.Emily shows signs of a mental collapse when her father passed away. She left his body in her house for three days and did not show any sign of grief. The town people did not question her mental capacity because her father was very controlling of her life. Faulkner describes the town people saying, "We did not say she was crazy then. We believed she had to do that. We remembered all the young men her father had driven away and we knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which robbed her, as people will. Emily was sick for a long time after her father's death. She cut her hair short, making her look like a little girl. She was described as looking tragic, yet serene. She was actually thinner than usual."Emily meets Homer Barron and have a romantic relationship. The town people all whisper their opinions of Emily throughout their courtship. They whisper things like, "Poor Emily." The town people all believed that Emily should marry. Emily was living a life pressured by the time period that believed that women were worth as much as the man or she marries. Emily was not married at all. She did many things that made the town people talk and speculate. She bought Arsenic which made the town think she might kill herself. Then, she bought a man's outfit, which made the town believe she was going to marry Homer Barron. She did not do either.

After Homer disappeared, Emily was only seen in her window on occasion. She grew to be fat with a head of gray hair. There was a brief time span of six or seven years that Emily brought herself into the public to give art lessons to young girls. After the girls were grown and stopped the lessons, Emily completely retreated to her house never to be seen again except through the windows. After Emily died, the town discovered the body of Homer Barron in the room prepared for a wedding in the abandoned house. On the pillow next to him, a strand of Emily's gray hair.In A Rose For Emily, there was a quote that suggest Emily would embrace the one person that molded her life thus far; "We knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which robbed her, as people will." Judith Fetterley suggest that Faulkner's descriptions of Emily's appearance was symbolic of Emily becoming her father. She says, "Having been consumed by her father, Emily in turn feeds off Homer Barron, becoming, after his death, suspiciously fat. Or, to put it another way, it is as if, after her father's death, she has reversed his act of incorporating her by incorporating and becoming him, metamorphosed from the slender figure in white to the obese figure in black whose hair is 'a vigorous iron-gray, like the hair of an active man.' She has taken into herself the violence in him which thwarted her and has reenacted it upon Homer Barron."I agree with William Faulkner that Emily deserved a rose. Emily was a victim in her life. She was raised by a strict, overbearing father that would not let her date. In that time period, women married for a good social standing. Emily did not have a lot going for her in her life. She was apart from her family for most of her life. She only knew what her father would allow for her to know. As soon as he died, she was alone. Through the story, the people of the town talk as if they know what is best for Emily, but no one really offers a helping hand. She did not have any guidance. She locked herself in her house while her mind deteriorated. When she met and courted Homer Barron, she still had hope that she would be okay. When Homer did not offer to marry her, she lost her hope. She does not want to be abandoned again, so she kills him and keeps him in her room for the rest of her life. She also had a family history of being crazy. Faulkner writes that her aunt had mental illness. Emily did not have much going for her. If she were to get a jail sentence, it would be a tragic ending to an already tragic story. Emily's life was a jail sentence of sorts. She locked herself away and lived a lonely, depressing life. She was an unfortunate person who suffered from adverse circumstances deserved a rose.

BACKGROUND PAPERONSLEEP DEPRIVATION OF AVIATORSImagine a family taking a military flight for their summer vacation. There is laughter and excitement among them as they plan their adventures ahead of them. Suddenly lights are flickering and the plane starts to descend at an alarming rate. Panic and fiery runs through them. Their lives are flashing before their eyesliterally. Why? Pilot fatigue was the cause of this fatal flight. Fatigue related incidents, with aviators, directly affects all Air Force personnel and their families because their lives are at stake. There are many causes of sleep deprivation and they all have the potential to have negative effects on aviators. Let's first discuss some of those causes. Help with essay on Don't Have an essay,

Long work hours, rotating work shifts, and intentional sleep restrictions are three of several causes of sleep deprivation. Long work shifts are required because budget constraints have drastically reduced the number of aviators available to fly all types of missions. For example, according to the Department of the Army Aircrew Training Manuel (TC 1-1), during the past ten years, Army personnel have been cut by 5 percent while missions have increased 00 percent. (Department of the Army 16) Along with the Army, the Air Force operations tempo has also increased while manning to support the missions have been reduced. Thus, long work hours are almost unavoidable. Likewise, rotating work schedules are common because 4-hour-per-day operations are essential to meeting customer demands in a timely fashion. Next-day or overnight deliveries of information, supplies, equipment, and/or repair parts has become an economic necessity in many sectors, and air transport is a key component in maintaining this "just in time" delivery system. Unlike long work hours and rotating work shifts, intentional sleep restriction is a controllable cause of daytime sleepiness that occurs because sleep is considered and option rather than a requirement. According to Dr. John Caldwell from the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory, reasons for intentional restriction include family responsibilities, social pressures, perceived work requirements, and the desire to participate in recreational activities. (Caldwell 6) Pilots on reverse cycle and other crew members working nights are especially tempted to sacrifice daytime sleep for the sake of spending time with family members and friends. Although pilots may feel that they are spending their extra time wisely, consistent self-imposed sleep deprivation can result in physical and mental deficiencies. Sleep deprivation effects people physically (i.e., circadian rhythm) and mentally (i.e., concentration and frustration). Rotating work shifts disrupt an individual's circadian rhythm (i.e., a person's daily rhythmic activity cycle based on 4- hour intervals). This is also true if travel across time zones is involved, stated G.P. Kruegar, author of Combatant Fatigue, Rest, and Sleep Needs. (Kruegar 60) Pilots in these situations can expect to suffer from shortened or disrupted sleep because they are attempting to sleep at times out of phase with internal biological rhythms or external environmental cues. When the body's normal schedule is disrupted, internal desynchronization occurs. This results in reduced energy and motivation, impaired sleep, degraded performance, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Fatigue impairs the mind by simple tasks of understanding or performing every day duties. D.F. Dinges, author of Crew Fatigue Monotoring, cautions that the performance becomes less consistent, especially during night hours. Sleepy pilots often fail to respond appropriately to cockpit demands, and they are at serious risk for missing task-related details because of an increase in unpredictable and involuntary sleep lapses. (Dinges 70) Problem solving, reasoning, and control accuracy degrade. Overall, the aviator's ability to pay attention to flight instruments and to manage radio communications, crew coordination, and navigational tasks is severely impaired. The causes of sleep deprivation on aviators long work schedules, rotating work shifts, and intentional sleep restrictions, as well as the effects mentally and physically, were briefly discussed above. In doing that, hopefully members of the United States Air Force realize how the lack of sleep, because of the problems that can arise, jeopardizes the lives of Air Force personnel and their families. This issue is no laughing matter. When planning your next family vacation, ask yourself one question. Did the aviator of your next flight get enough sleep? As "Dover Beach" by Matthew Arnold begins, the speaker is standing upon the shore near the white cliffs of Dover, England, while viewing the English Channel and the French shore on the other side. The calm night as described in the first stanza is misleading as what seems to be a peaceful and tranquil world actually contains violent action, represented by the waves crashing down on the beach. The speaker believes the collapsing waves represent the human misery. Our world has become full of this human misery and the speaker means to warn us against this discreet aspect of nature. The speaker reminisces about the earlier times before the world was corrupted and uses symbolism and intricate diction to explain the world as it is now. He does this by recalling good times of the past, and by warning us of the loss of faith and coming of misery. An important aspect of "Dover Beach" is the presence and importance of symbolism. In the beginning of the poem, during the description of the calm sea at night, a light across the channel on the French side "gleams and is gone." In most cases of poetry, it is common for light to represent kindness and hopefulness. The extinguishing of this light symbolizes these good qualities of the world being extinguished. At this point, though, the mood is still quiet and optimistic. The most obvious symbol, however, is the constant reminder of the presence of the sea. The sea seems to represent the entire world. This is shown in both the second and third stanzas when the speaker describes the sea as it was long ago. Since the waves symbolize human misery and characterize the sea, and the sea represents the world, the world is characterized by human misery. The diction in "Dover Beach" gives the poem a noticeably peaceful tone. Words, such as "vast," "full," "tranquil," "calm," and "glimmering," reassure this tone. The tone changes when the diction changes to a rougher, wave-crashing feel. At approximately line seven, the land is described as "moon-blanched," and the waves are illustrated by their "grating roar" and their hostility as they "fling" up onto the beach. In the second stanza, we hear a sound by the "distant northern sea," signifying the seclusion and coldness of the world. In the third stanza, we see the "Sea of Faith" once wrapping the earth like a "bright girdle furled." Here, the speaker proposes that at one point the world embodied faith that secured it like a "girdle furled." The faith almost gone, however, leaves the world with only a "withdrawing" wind-like whisper of faith's past presence. The fourth stanza leaves us with a warning in which we are now, faithless, on a "darkling plain." This plain contrasts with the time when the "Sea of Faith" wrapped the earth "full, and round." The last two lines consist of language such as "confused," "ignorant," "clash" and "night," which leave a dark and unsettling impression on the reader. When a man is on a beautiful beach in Dover, England, he looks over the cliffs at the moon and the ocean and the "night-air" is still and passive. It is ironic that he begins to talk about Sophocles on the Aegean Sea. This, a seemingly random allusion, is important as Sophocles shared the speaker's tragic view of life. The speaker uses visual and auditory images to help the reader understand his fantasy-like setting. He describes the sea as "calm," the tide as "full" and "of pebbles which the waves draw back," these images appealing to the visual sense, while "where the sea meets the moon-blanched land" and "with tremulous cadence slow," appeal to the auditory sense.

Dover Beach flows through four irregularly rhymed sections. Arnolds poem consists of a lack of a distinct structure or rhyme scheme. The first stanza has an ABACDBDCE rhyme scheme and no continuing pattern. The entire structure of the poem begins with true beauty and peace and gradually ends with fake beauty and fake peace. It begins with beautiful scenery and ends with the vision of clashing armies. In other words, our world, at some point, contains both examples of beauty. This poem ends with a warning of the deception of nature in our world. The first six lines of "Dover Beach" are positive. They describe the moonlit English Channel as calm and beautiful, two very common adjectives used in the poem. However the start of the seventh line reveals the stage where waves with noise and violence "fling" themselves upon the beach, carrying with them the "eternal note of sadness." This contrast to the stillness of the open sea serves as a foreshadow of the warning of the deceiving nature of the world. The speaker tells us that the world, which may appear to be "sweet," "beautiful," and "new" actually contains sadness, darkness, violence and hate. The speaker sees a world that has lost its faith, and contains human misery. The last two lines contain the bleak image of chaos and confusion in the world, the actual warning to the reader. We must not be deceived by the beauty and tranquility of nature, while there is hatred and evil present in our world.

Ironic Examples in "The Bet" Irony is the use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning or, A literary style employing such contrasts for humorous or rhetorical effect. In the short story "The Bet" by Anton Chekov, the author uses irony to make the story more capricious in the banker's decision to kill the prisoner rather than pay him, in the prisoner's decision to repudiate the two millions, and in the actual note the prisoner writes. One first example of irony that is used in the short story is when the banker decides to kill the prisoner because he cannot meet the expense of the two million dollars. The night before the lawyer is set to be free, the banker is thinking of the things he could do to demolish the bet. "If I do pay him, it is all over with me I shall be utterly ruined [ . . . ]. The one means of being saved from bankruptcy and disgrace is the death of that man."(Chekov 16)

Custom Essays on The BEt

This is an example of an ironic circumstance because in the beginning of the short story the youthful lawyer states he would rather be imprisoned for life locked behind bars rather than take the death penalty , because he strongly stands by his principle that living even in a state of gloom is better than being deceased. Near the end of the story the banker arranges to murder the lawyer because he would be devastated if he had to give up his last two millions. The whole reason that the BET took place was to prove to the banker that imprisonment was better than the death penalty, and the lawyer was going to be killed in some way or form somehow. The irony in this situation makes the story a lot less predictable and adds suspense because the reader does not know what will happen next. The reader does not know if the banker really is going to kill his prisoner and if he does, how might he do it. The next example of irony in the story is when the young lawyer decides to renounce the two millions. The banker is reading the lawyer's letter the day before the lawyer is set to be free "To prove to you in action how I despise all that you live by, I renounce the two millions of which I once dreamed as of paradise and which I now despise. To deprive myself of the right to the money I shall go out from here five minutes before the time fixed, and so break the compact . . . " (165)The actions taken by the young lawyer to deprive himself of the money five minutes before he was about to receive the two million dollars is extremely ironic. The reader expects the lawyer to hold out for the last hours to make the fifteen tears of confinement complete, but what actually happens is a shock to the reader because after waiting for fifteen years he doe not want the money. This is another example of irony of a situation because the reader does not expect the lawyer to leave the lodge before his time is up. The last example of irony in the story is in the note the prisoner writes to the banker. The banker is reading the prisoner's note about his plans to break the bet five minutes before his the set time "In your books I have flung my self into a bottomless pit, performed miracles, slain, burned towns, preached new religions, conquered whole kingdoms. Your books have given me wisdom. All that the unresting thought of man has created in the ages is compressed into a small compass in my brain. I know that I am wiser than all of you." (165)During the last night, the prisoner is feeling free because of all the knowledge he has gained, while the banker is feeling confined from his thoughts of what he is going to do about giving the last of his money up. Ironically, the roles are reversed, instead of the young lawyer feeling confined, he feels free, and instead of the banker feeling free, he feels confined. What is also ironic about the situation is that the lawyer was never held captive the whole fifteen years. He had books that took him to different places where he experienced different things. Although the young lawyer was kept captive figuratively, his mind cold not be held captive also. The author uses irony in the story when the banker decides to kill the prisoner rather than pay him, when the prisoner decides to renounce the two millions, and when the actual note the prisoner writes contains the truth of how he was able to travel outside of the lodge with the books he read. The first example if irony in the story is when the lawyer decides to kill the banker after the whole reason that the bet took place was to prove to the banker that imprisonment was better than the death penalty. The next example of irony in the story is when the prisoner decides to renounce the two millions after the reader thinks that he will hold out for the last hour to get the two million dollars. The last example of irony in the story is when the banker actually feels free because of the knowledge he as gained by being able to read books and travel places with his imagination, and the banker feels trapped because of the two million dollars he has to pay the lawyer. The author's irony is not always obvious to see, but that does not mean it is not there.

7, May 00Journalism Journalism has transformed dramatically over the years. The advancement of technology has helped the media evolve by giving people a better perspective of how the world is viewed today. Radios, computers, telephones, and televisions are becoming important tools in the 1st century. Now people have the opportunity to access global information, multimedia content, and instantaneous news. Because journalism has become an important source of gathering information, the history, present, and future of journalism will be presented. In 115, the Massachusetts Agricultural College first introduced journalism as a major. With a master's degree from Harvard and Yale, Robert Wilson Neal taught journalism from 106 to 10. At the University of Massachusetts, Neal's work in modern journalism has been viewed for over 80 years. There were two books Neal wrote that were published by Oxford University Press in 114 and 118. They were called "Short Story Writing in the Making," and "Today's Short Stories Analyzed." Also, Neal had studied law and taught at several universities in the U.S. such as University of Kansas, University of Cincinnati, and Rutgers College. On May 18, 115, Neal wrote in an article that the press would be one of strongly influences in American lives and that it would have an impact on societal issues such as religion, education, public morals, and it will either have a positive or negative effect on the community (Neal). There were not any statistics showing how many students actually joined the major or when it finished. Therefore, Massachusetts Agricultural College did not create a strong program for journalism. Nonetheless, after leaving the college, he decided to teach journalistic writing at Home Correspondence School in Springfield and became vice president and a member of the board of directors. Unfortunately, in 1, he died at the age of sixty-eight (Grimes, L Sarah). The opportunities the news media brings is growing in the 1st century. The wireless communications such as broadband is helping news organizations by transferring media files faster than ever. Digital tools such as high digital cameras, personal computers are giving reporters limitless communication capabilities. The virtual newsrooms have taken journalism to the next level. Journalists can feel at ease working with electronic emails, databases, and transmitting media content without any difficulties. Also, news directors can think of countless possibilities of how to construct newsrooms in an organized way. A networked computer workstation can provide editors and producers with limitless opportunities to reconstruct the media content without having to be concerned about where the computers are located. Limits are not a concern with virtual newsrooms because it can capture a mass audience. Although the equipment is cheaper, the audience can have a live video interaction with news organizations. With virtual newsrooms, reporters can also get equal access to information, people, and processing power. The significance of virtual newsrooms is that developing news events can be broadcasted from the exact location. With this technology available, information presented will contain higher accuracy (106-107).In the digital age, newsrooms are becoming far more convenient to journalists because they can edit and produce a video without any complications. Leadership has become an important role due to technological advancements. However, new technology can create a few problems. First, the expenses are high. Second, it can confuse employees who may not be willing to learn the changes because it may be difficult. There are important principles a person should follow when introducing new technology. 1) Include newsroom staff in process of identifying appropriate technology. ) Provide extensive training on new technology before expecting staff to use it. ) Provide sufficient technical support (111).Another important factor is that relationships between audiences and news organizations must have chemistry together. The press has an obligation to help citizens become informed about democracy. The press is considered to be the fourth branch of government and, therefore, protected by the 1st amendment. However, during recent years, people have drifted away from the media. "Trust is the glue that holds newsrooms together and ultimately binds readers to a specific newspaper and to read newspapers in general"(New York Times). Most people are becoming pessimistic of online journalism. However, there are three reasons why online journalism is not the problem. Firstly, online journalism will begin to thrive and will be credible to the audience as it grows. But for now, it is only starting to gain recognition. Secondly, mistakes can be corrected found in an article or column by readers who read online news. Thirdly, online capabilities offered to news providers include hyperlinks, which provide additional details about the story (15-1). When a journalist writes a newspaper, it is divided into three parts a headline, first paragraph, and the remainder of the story. Most people will read the headline first before reading the article because it is in big and bold words, which usually is eye-catching. The first paragraph is always the writer's focus of the story that would include factual information. The writer will answer questions using the five W's, which are Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How? If a fire broke out, then the writer would answer What? By answering Who? and Where? The writer would give the location of the fire and whose properties were affected. The writer would answer the question "When?," by giving the time period from the beginning of the fire to the end of the blaze. By answering "Why?" The writer would mention cigarette butts, which would be the cause. Finally, by answering "How?" the writer could mention that the approximate cost of the damage done by the fire (0-1). The future of journalism will change overtime. "If you are a journalist at the beginning of your career, this is an exciting time to be in," (Frum). He believes that the future of media contains limitless opportunities and by making the media access easier, the market will become a difficult challenge. However, Starowicz thinks that technology will isolate people and the wealthy will control the market. Also, he feels that the news media will become dominant by commercialism of television and the Internet and that readers will rely on online news media than newspapers or magazines. But from Frum's perspective, technology will have a positive impact on the Internet because it will keep people informed about current events. Nonetheless, Frum and Starowicz believe that in the near future journalists will face a lot of challenges (Berezowski, Sarah). As technology becomes a part of peoples' lives computers, radios, and telephones will significantly revolutionize communication. Journalists will have to learn different skills to deliver news to audiences with strong information. There is no doubt that telling stories will be the main focus of journalists. There are 4 key points that will need to be addressed for the future of news 1) How will changes in communication technology affect journalists and news organizations? ) How can the quality, integrity and usefulness of the news product be maintained? ) How can journalists use these new communication tools to better serve the audience and our society? 4) How will the audience react to this rapid pace of change? (Newsroom Resources).Reducing alienation and distrust of media will expand because of technology. points are usually dominated by journalism. 1) To survey the world and report the facts as they are best understood. ) To interpret those facts in terms of their impact on the local community or society at large. ) To provide opinion or editorial guidance on facts, thereby helping create public opinion on matters of importance and to set an agenda for public discourse. In the 1st century, journalists will not be the main provider for news information. Events being interpreted by journalists will grow and change. As the audience obtains important information and its purpose, the roles of journalists will need to develop by adding value to their work. Nonetheless, reconnecting communities will be a vital role for journalists online and off. This will help the participation of citizens to get involved in public issues and create a responsive audience (17-1).In conclusion, Massachusetts has become the birthplace of journalism. With Neal and his accomplishments, he helped transform journalism to what it is now today. Wireless technology gadgets are providing journalists with faster media content. Virtual newsrooms are becoming common these days because it involves the audience to give live feedback with their opinions and giving journalists the opportunity to report live news media from any location. Also, leadership roles have become an important aspect in the news industry to help media expand. Keeping a relationship with an audience will be critical to journalists who want recognition and respect of their work. Assisting people to become informed citizens of democracy and telling the truth will build a circle of trust. Journalists should write articles that will improve their credibility by presenting factual information. The objective of a journalist will always be telling news events. With journalists' value of information, the wall dividing journalists and the audience will be broken.
