Silas Marner, by George Elliot, not only discusses how relationships and love had an effect on each of the characters of the book, but it also proves anything could happen to anyone at anytime. Each character was personally affected by love, but it was Silas whom found what the meaning of true love was after a surprise showed up at his home. Since he was such a lonely weaver and did not have any close friends, Silas Marner's gold was the only object of his affection. What he thought was love, was only pure greed. Silas could not understand what love was due to pastime experiences of being betrayed in his homeland. Silas Marner was a modern day hermit, cooped up in his home all day and waited for someone to walk into his life and show him what love was. All the characters were affected by love in one way or another. Godfrey Cass' selfish behavior got him what he wanted, Nancy to take his hand in marriage, but he betrayed his own newborn daughter in the process. Godfrey was in love with Nancy, or so he thought. Either way Nancy was going to be his wife, and she eventually was. This chain of events was beneficial for Silas. The abandoned baby girl, Eppie, found her way into Silas' home and heart. Soon they were inseparable, and Silas finally experienced true love. After years of waiting, Silas was able to take on the responsibility of being a father, a responsibility not everyone is able to experience. Godfrey Cass on the other hand, believed he had an empty void in his heart, which could only be filled by Eppie. This "void" was created by Nancy who wanted a child of her own, and convinced Godfrey to take Eppie away from Silas. Fortunately, they were unsuccessful. The events of this novel had the ability to open one's eyes to the realities of life. Anything is possible in the real world, and we must be prepared for whatever God has in store for us. The quote "Good things happen to those who wait" can be used as a theme throughout the novel. Silas Marner had a kind heart; he just did not know how to use it. After years of patiently waiting, he was finally rewarded. This once widely known outcast became the talk of the town and well respected.
