She walked in from out of the rain on that bleak and gloomy day in December. The holidays were always a terrible time for her, and this one would be no different from the last three. She remember when these times were full of joy and the happy sites and sounds which Christmas would bring, yet this Christmas seemed so much more...more than just depressing, it seemed more like she was at a crossroads of sorts. Later in the evening when she was home watching MTV and listening to some of her favorite Britney Spears CDs, her phone suddenly rang out loud causing her to almost jump out of her thin and anorexic like skin. She was hoping it would be him calling after all these years, but it wasnt. Instead, it was the drug store clerk who called to let her know that her moms prescription had come in and that they could come in and pick it up anytime today if they wanted to. So anyway, she got up and went to the store and picked up the medication and paid for it with her own money that she had worked so hard at McDonalds over the summer to assertain. On her way back from the drug store, she noticed a blue car sitting in her driveway at home when she arrived back there. It was an old car, and one which she felt she had seen quite some time ago. As she walked to the door to open it so she could walk cautiously inside, first she saw her mom and the look on her face, and then as her mom turned her head to the right and towards the living room, her head followed her moms. Her eyesight was clear because she had just gotten a new pair of contact lenses, so she knew what she was seeing was real. She couldnt believe it, and then he spoke. hi Jenny, its nice to see you again. Its been a long time huh? She didnt know whether to be angry at the way he left, or just be happy and give him a hug because she was just so glad to see him. For a moment however, she stood there frozen in time and in her footsteps. When the shock of his arrival finally wore off, she walked up to her mom first and asked her if she and Steve could be alone for a few minutes. Her mom said yes, okay, but to just please be careful. Her mom reminded her that it was Steve who caused her so much hurt and pain and that she should not ever forget the fact that it was him who was responsible for her getting pregnant and the reason why she lost the baby. This weighed heavy on her mind, and he knew it too. Oh yes, he knew it alright. So anyway, they went outside with what surely and truely was going to be a long talk, and when he tried to put his hands around her waist and kiss her on her lips, she stop him at the very last second, and whispered to him, Steve, I have always loved you, but please, before we do this or talk about us getting back together, because I know thats why you are here, please oh please Steve, dont go breaking my heart. Steve knew he couldnt lie to her anymore, so he told her the truth. He looked left and then he looked right, and then tried to hold back the tears and then he suddenly found the strength to look deep into her eyes when right there and then he told her. listen, I need to tell you something, I really love you and have missed you, and I know you have been dreaming about me and about wanting me back in your life and I know how much you want to feel me in your arms again and to make love to you by the fireplace and at the beach, because at night lying in my bed, I can feel your thoughts, I can sense them, and yes, I would be lying if I said I didnt think about you too. But again, like I said earlier, I have something to tell you. I am (he studders and shakes) I am (he does this again at least twice more) I am married now. BUT, I still need to see you, I still need to feel you, and I want us to see each other whenever I can get away from work, the house , the wife and kids, I want us to be the way we used to be. Suddenly she pulls away from him and says, Steve, I cant be your secret lover, I dont want to be the other woman in your life, I am sick of feeling like this, being in love with you and wanting you, and instead, all I have done the past three years if have two abortions because you dont want us to have a baby and other things too which I do not wish to talk about! And I am just not ready to suffer like that anymore. Steve couldnt believe what he was hearing, and as her mother heard the loudness and anger in her voice from inside the house, she walked out from the kitchen to the carport, and asked her if everything was alright. She replied yes mom now please go back inside. And as her mom went back inside, she turned to Steve, but only to see that he was gone. Just like before, he had suddenly vanished and left her again. But this time she was stronger, and wiser, and not about to give in to another abortion because of him. Instead, she turned around and whispered to herself. Dont go breaking my heart and then she spoke out loud. yeah right, Steve, like you really care. Then it started to rain. The End

Emily Grieson was a woman with a tragic life story. Through the story of A Rose for Emily, the writer, William Faulkner makes symbolic references of Emily's appearance. Through Emily's life transitions and mental disintegration her appearance becomes dilapidated. Judith Fetterley, a feminist writer, also mentions the effects of the time period and what is expected of a woman on Emily's appearance, in her interpretation of the story. In an interview with William Faulkner he also describes the pressure of the time period on Emily. A Rose for Emily tells of family history of insanity. Her father was a mighty overbearing man. The Grierson's held themselves in higher regard than they were worthy of. When Emily was of age, her father would not let any man court her. She was described as a slender woman dressed in white when she was a young woman ready for marriage.Emily shows signs of a mental collapse when her father passed away. She left his body in her house for three days and did not show any sign of grief. The town people did not question her mental capacity because her father was very controlling of her life. Faulkner describes the town people saying, "We did not say she was crazy then. We believed she had to do that. We remembered all the young men her father had driven away and we knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which robbed her, as people will. Emily was sick for a long time after her father's death. She cut her hair short, making her look like a little girl. She was described as looking tragic, yet serene. She was actually thinner than usual."Emily meets Homer Barron and have a romantic relationship. The town people all whisper their opinions of Emily throughout their courtship. They whisper things like, "Poor Emily." The town people all believed that Emily should marry. Emily was living a life pressured by the time period that believed that women were worth as much as the man or she marries. Emily was not married at all. She did many things that made the town people talk and speculate. She bought Arsenic which made the town think she might kill herself. Then, she bought a man's outfit, which made the town believe she was going to marry Homer Barron. She did not do either.

After Homer disappeared, Emily was only seen in her window on occasion. She grew to be fat with a head of gray hair. There was a brief time span of six or seven years that Emily brought herself into the public to give art lessons to young girls. After the girls were grown and stopped the lessons, Emily completely retreated to her house never to be seen again except through the windows. After Emily died, the town discovered the body of Homer Barron in the room prepared for a wedding in the abandoned house. On the pillow next to him, a strand of Emily's gray hair.In A Rose For Emily, there was a quote that suggest Emily would embrace the one person that molded her life thus far; "We knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which robbed her, as people will." Judith Fetterley suggest that Faulkner's descriptions of Emily's appearance was symbolic of Emily becoming her father. She says, "Having been consumed by her father, Emily in turn feeds off Homer Barron, becoming, after his death, suspiciously fat. Or, to put it another way, it is as if, after her father's death, she has reversed his act of incorporating her by incorporating and becoming him, metamorphosed from the slender figure in white to the obese figure in black whose hair is 'a vigorous iron-gray, like the hair of an active man.' She has taken into herself the violence in him which thwarted her and has reenacted it upon Homer Barron."I agree with William Faulkner that Emily deserved a rose. Emily was a victim in her life. She was raised by a strict, overbearing father that would not let her date. In that time period, women married for a good social standing. Emily did not have a lot going for her in her life. She was apart from her family for most of her life. She only knew what her father would allow for her to know. As soon as he died, she was alone. Through the story, the people of the town talk as if they know what is best for Emily, but no one really offers a helping hand. She did not have any guidance. She locked herself in her house while her mind deteriorated. When she met and courted Homer Barron, she still had hope that she would be okay. When Homer did not offer to marry her, she lost her hope. She does not want to be abandoned again, so she kills him and keeps him in her room for the rest of her life. She also had a family history of being crazy. Faulkner writes that her aunt had mental illness. Emily did not have much going for her. If she were to get a jail sentence, it would be a tragic ending to an already tragic story. Emily's life was a jail sentence of sorts. She locked herself away and lived a lonely, depressing life. She was an unfortunate person who suffered from adverse circumstances deserved a rose.

BACKGROUND PAPERONSLEEP DEPRIVATION OF AVIATORSImagine a family taking a military flight for their summer vacation. There is laughter and excitement among them as they plan their adventures ahead of them. Suddenly lights are flickering and the plane starts to descend at an alarming rate. Panic and fiery runs through them. Their lives are flashing before their eyesliterally. Why? Pilot fatigue was the cause of this fatal flight. Fatigue related incidents, with aviators, directly affects all Air Force personnel and their families because their lives are at stake. There are many causes of sleep deprivation and they all have the potential to have negative effects on aviators. Let's first discuss some of those causes. Help with essay on Don't Have an essay,

Long work hours, rotating work shifts, and intentional sleep restrictions are three of several causes of sleep deprivation. Long work shifts are required because budget constraints have drastically reduced the number of aviators available to fly all types of missions. For example, according to the Department of the Army Aircrew Training Manuel (TC 1-1), during the past ten years, Army personnel have been cut by 5 percent while missions have increased 00 percent. (Department of the Army 16) Along with the Army, the Air Force operations tempo has also increased while manning to support the missions have been reduced. Thus, long work hours are almost unavoidable. Likewise, rotating work schedules are common because 4-hour-per-day operations are essential to meeting customer demands in a timely fashion. Next-day or overnight deliveries of information, supplies, equipment, and/or repair parts has become an economic necessity in many sectors, and air transport is a key component in maintaining this "just in time" delivery system. Unlike long work hours and rotating work shifts, intentional sleep restriction is a controllable cause of daytime sleepiness that occurs because sleep is considered and option rather than a requirement. According to Dr. John Caldwell from the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory, reasons for intentional restriction include family responsibilities, social pressures, perceived work requirements, and the desire to participate in recreational activities. (Caldwell 6) Pilots on reverse cycle and other crew members working nights are especially tempted to sacrifice daytime sleep for the sake of spending time with family members and friends. Although pilots may feel that they are spending their extra time wisely, consistent self-imposed sleep deprivation can result in physical and mental deficiencies. Sleep deprivation effects people physically (i.e., circadian rhythm) and mentally (i.e., concentration and frustration). Rotating work shifts disrupt an individual's circadian rhythm (i.e., a person's daily rhythmic activity cycle based on 4- hour intervals). This is also true if travel across time zones is involved, stated G.P. Kruegar, author of Combatant Fatigue, Rest, and Sleep Needs. (Kruegar 60) Pilots in these situations can expect to suffer from shortened or disrupted sleep because they are attempting to sleep at times out of phase with internal biological rhythms or external environmental cues. When the body's normal schedule is disrupted, internal desynchronization occurs. This results in reduced energy and motivation, impaired sleep, degraded performance, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Fatigue impairs the mind by simple tasks of understanding or performing every day duties. D.F. Dinges, author of Crew Fatigue Monotoring, cautions that the performance becomes less consistent, especially during night hours. Sleepy pilots often fail to respond appropriately to cockpit demands, and they are at serious risk for missing task-related details because of an increase in unpredictable and involuntary sleep lapses. (Dinges 70) Problem solving, reasoning, and control accuracy degrade. Overall, the aviator's ability to pay attention to flight instruments and to manage radio communications, crew coordination, and navigational tasks is severely impaired. The causes of sleep deprivation on aviators long work schedules, rotating work shifts, and intentional sleep restrictions, as well as the effects mentally and physically, were briefly discussed above. In doing that, hopefully members of the United States Air Force realize how the lack of sleep, because of the problems that can arise, jeopardizes the lives of Air Force personnel and their families. This issue is no laughing matter. When planning your next family vacation, ask yourself one question. Did the aviator of your next flight get enough sleep? As "Dover Beach" by Matthew Arnold begins, the speaker is standing upon the shore near the white cliffs of Dover, England, while viewing the English Channel and the French shore on the other side. The calm night as described in the first stanza is misleading as what seems to be a peaceful and tranquil world actually contains violent action, represented by the waves crashing down on the beach. The speaker believes the collapsing waves represent the human misery. Our world has become full of this human misery and the speaker means to warn us against this discreet aspect of nature. The speaker reminisces about the earlier times before the world was corrupted and uses symbolism and intricate diction to explain the world as it is now. He does this by recalling good times of the past, and by warning us of the loss of faith and coming of misery. An important aspect of "Dover Beach" is the presence and importance of symbolism. In the beginning of the poem, during the description of the calm sea at night, a light across the channel on the French side "gleams and is gone." In most cases of poetry, it is common for light to represent kindness and hopefulness. The extinguishing of this light symbolizes these good qualities of the world being extinguished. At this point, though, the mood is still quiet and optimistic. The most obvious symbol, however, is the constant reminder of the presence of the sea. The sea seems to represent the entire world. This is shown in both the second and third stanzas when the speaker describes the sea as it was long ago. Since the waves symbolize human misery and characterize the sea, and the sea represents the world, the world is characterized by human misery. The diction in "Dover Beach" gives the poem a noticeably peaceful tone. Words, such as "vast," "full," "tranquil," "calm," and "glimmering," reassure this tone. The tone changes when the diction changes to a rougher, wave-crashing feel. At approximately line seven, the land is described as "moon-blanched," and the waves are illustrated by their "grating roar" and their hostility as they "fling" up onto the beach. In the second stanza, we hear a sound by the "distant northern sea," signifying the seclusion and coldness of the world. In the third stanza, we see the "Sea of Faith" once wrapping the earth like a "bright girdle furled." Here, the speaker proposes that at one point the world embodied faith that secured it like a "girdle furled." The faith almost gone, however, leaves the world with only a "withdrawing" wind-like whisper of faith's past presence. The fourth stanza leaves us with a warning in which we are now, faithless, on a "darkling plain." This plain contrasts with the time when the "Sea of Faith" wrapped the earth "full, and round." The last two lines consist of language such as "confused," "ignorant," "clash" and "night," which leave a dark and unsettling impression on the reader. When a man is on a beautiful beach in Dover, England, he looks over the cliffs at the moon and the ocean and the "night-air" is still and passive. It is ironic that he begins to talk about Sophocles on the Aegean Sea. This, a seemingly random allusion, is important as Sophocles shared the speaker's tragic view of life. The speaker uses visual and auditory images to help the reader understand his fantasy-like setting. He describes the sea as "calm," the tide as "full" and "of pebbles which the waves draw back," these images appealing to the visual sense, while "where the sea meets the moon-blanched land" and "with tremulous cadence slow," appeal to the auditory sense.

Dover Beach flows through four irregularly rhymed sections. Arnolds poem consists of a lack of a distinct structure or rhyme scheme. The first stanza has an ABACDBDCE rhyme scheme and no continuing pattern. The entire structure of the poem begins with true beauty and peace and gradually ends with fake beauty and fake peace. It begins with beautiful scenery and ends with the vision of clashing armies. In other words, our world, at some point, contains both examples of beauty. This poem ends with a warning of the deception of nature in our world. The first six lines of "Dover Beach" are positive. They describe the moonlit English Channel as calm and beautiful, two very common adjectives used in the poem. However the start of the seventh line reveals the stage where waves with noise and violence "fling" themselves upon the beach, carrying with them the "eternal note of sadness." This contrast to the stillness of the open sea serves as a foreshadow of the warning of the deceiving nature of the world. The speaker tells us that the world, which may appear to be "sweet," "beautiful," and "new" actually contains sadness, darkness, violence and hate. The speaker sees a world that has lost its faith, and contains human misery. The last two lines contain the bleak image of chaos and confusion in the world, the actual warning to the reader. We must not be deceived by the beauty and tranquility of nature, while there is hatred and evil present in our world.
