Phish interviews are a lot like the bands shows real long and full of intriguing digressions. For the groups first Rolling Stone cover story, guitarist Trey Anastasio, keyboard player Page McConnell, bass guitarist Mike Gordon and drummer Jon Fishman individually spoke at great length about Phishs history, breakup and reunion album, Round Room; their stage antics, jamming philosophies and plans for the second phase of their career. What follows are previously unpublished excerpts from those conversations -- a taste of the outtakes from nearly ten hours of interviews.TREY ANASTASIOOn not screwing up and the giant hot dog ride at Boston Garden, New Years Eve, 14The hot dog started with a conversation about how we could get closer to the guy with the worst seat in the house -- whoever showed up at the venue, looked at their ticket and went, Ugh, this seat sucks. So the idea is, well fly out there to this guy. How are we going to do that? We came up with the hot dog. And we did it. We went right up to this guy and waved to him Hey, man!

There is definitely that weight of expectations now, and trying to do what the audience has always expected. It can get to be too much. After all the work that went into Phish becoming what it is, I didnt want it to be a weight on my shoulders that would drag me down. It was starting to feel a lot like that. Now I just feel lucky, very lucky, for a lot of reasons -- that everybodys still healthy and together. I had a funny experience with Graham Nash. We went to see Crosby Stills Nash and Young at the end of February 000. That was a pretty crazy time for us. Everybody was out running around, being rock stars. It was getting pretty nuts. So we went to see CSNY. We went in a limo, went backstage with all these people hanging around. Its a big scene. David Crosby comes up and says, Phish, I heard about you guys. Then Graham Nash comes over and goes, Youre in Phish, right? I say, Yeah. He gets right up to me and says, Congratulations on your success. I heard about you guys. Youre in a great position right now. And hes getting closer and closer to me. And as hes talking to me, he reached out with his hand and grabbed my shirt, pulled my face right up to his, and goes, Dont fuck it up! Pushed me backwards and walked away. I was just laughing so hard. But then I thought about it -- Man, Im gonna take that to heart. You think about everything that hes seen. My God [laughs]. Dont fuck it up.So thats how I feel now. Im really glad that I havent fucked it up.MIKE GORDONOn filmmaking and songwritingMusic is my deepest passion, unquestionably. I decided that, from graduating college [where Gordon majored in filmmaking] to turning thirty, that I would really concentrate on music - and after that, open it up a little bit, to exploring filmmaking again.Trey is such a prolific songwriter, and always has been. There is so much creative energy in the band. A lot of my favorite experiences were these real right-brain jams being on stage, these peak experiences. But I have this part of my personality that needs to use the left side of my brain, which I can do with filmmaking, because nobody around me was doing it.I spent 5,000 hours working on one of my films, Outside Out. I edited it myself, over a four-and-a-half year period. I actually wrote some music for it. And it was about music. So I wasnt forgetting music. And I was playing with Phish and really loving it, for those four years. But I think I could have written more songs and contributed more in other ways.Trey has gone through phases when he was worried about that. But I love working on his songs. I dont have to be the writer and leader. Its also hard because Im pretty shy. And I havent written enough songs to know how to bring them to the band and be able to see them through. But this year was really good for me. I finished Riding Low [Gordons movie about Govt Mule] at the end of last year. And I was tired of filming music rather than playing it. I was living in New York. I got myself an office in the Woolworth Building, and I went in everyday and wrote a song -- a song a day.It was my most prolific time ever. I played Trey a couple of demos when I was in Boston -- I sat in with his band at Great Woods for the encore -- and then we got together, after the hiatus, and everyone had stuff to play. But I had more stuff than Ive ever had. By the time we got to band practice, Id made discs for everyone that had twenty-two songs. We worked out pretty good versions of about eight of them, which is more songs than Id ever brought to the table.Mock Song [on Round Room] was really a mock song. I was just setting up the gear in my studio. I hired an engineer to come in and teach me some things about miking drums and running things. We needed a song, and since we didnt have a real one, we put together a mock one. And people liked it.The band ended up recording five of the songs I brought to the sessions and put two of them on the album. I havent had two songs on a Phish album in ten years. So thats not too bad.PAGE McCONNELLOn weirdness and pushing fortyEverything about Phish -- its all one big, giant inside joke [laughs], although I would say, on the new album, theres a lot more emotion. At least a little bit more -- we dont want too much emotion in there [laughs]. But we are kind of like that -- goofy, dorky, silly on certain levels. We try not to take ourselves too seriously. At the same time, we are very serious about so much of what we do. Were very focused and dedicated. There are times, with Treys lyrics, where I have not been completely attached to, or know exactly, what Im singing. Sometimes, its more like these are just words that sound good coming out. They have a musicality unto themselves, aside from whatever meaning Trey or Tom [Marshall, Anastasios co-writer] put to them. Other times, Ill attach my own meaning to things.Gamehenge was an epic that started thirteen, fourteen years ago. We were much younger, and it was a joke. Things were a lot funnier then [smiles]. I was never into Dungeons and Dragons -- none of us were -- but it was a play on that whole thing. It was also a takeoff on Stonehenge -- the Spinal Tap joke -- and some of the Genesis-Yes-type lyrics, the progressive rock that was such an influence on us. Those were not necessarily the greatest lyrics ever written, but the fantasy-wordplay of those bands became such a big part of our career. But when we got to the Rift album, in 14, we had the song, Fast Enough for You. We were like, Okay, were actually going to do a song that carries some emotional weight and seriousness. Its about two people, a relationship. I remember that being a big deal -- Can we pull this off? Can we sing something like this? It was the first one we did like that. We were on our fourth album, and we finally had a serious song on there. It was a sign forward.Trey was very nervous when he brought it in. It has to be difficult to bring songs to us anyway. But I remember that one specifically Now were going to try and sing a song that is just a pretty song with some nice words about a relationship.I love songs. And I think some of the greatest songs weve ever written are on this new album. I tend to like songs with nice melodies. All of These Dreams [on Round Room] is a good song with a great chorus, good harmonies and a simple chord progression. Over the years, there has been a dichotomy of, on one hand, the goofy side of us, and on the other, a more serious side trying to get out. We may even have been trapped by our reputation how we were perceived, what we think the fans are expecting.Weve been looking at the song list for the new shows and going, I really want to play Fast Enough for You. But the other songs -- do I really want to play this or that? I dont know. We used to have about 00 songs on the song list that we would play, that were in our repertoire. And I know there are least twenty that were excited to go back and play.Others will filter back in. But were trying to look forward. Part of the breakup was the pressure of feeling, Im not twenty-four anymore. Im pushing forty now. We want to play what feels like us.JON FISHMANOn politics and the futureI had a couple of different concepts of what I would do next, if Phish wasnt going to come back. I would have probably played in Pork Tornado and the Jazz Mandolin Project for a little while longer. Then I would have weaned myself off of being a live touring musician -- had it become more of a personally gratifying thing for myself, at home. And I would have run for governor. Im dead serious. I would have gotten involved in the political process. I dont know anyone that bitches more than me about stuff going on.I have this mental block -- Ive never felt, You cant do that. Ive been like that my whole life. My mother was definitely like, Go for it, kid, live for your dreams. My dad had the pragmatic thing It would be good to have something to fall back on. My mom was like, Fall forward! And they were both right. We dont talk about politics that much in the band. We all know whats going on. But Im the one in the band . . . if it were up to me, we would have gotten more involved in politics. But I feel that I have been sufficiently argued out of that, with very convincing reasoning, by all three of them. The four of us have done so well at letting Phish not be the result of any single persons agenda. What it has amounted to, the real vision there, is as purely as possible -- music for the sake of music. And I really do believe that things have to exist in the world that are just for their own sake, their own beauty. Everything doesnt have to be tied to what side of the fence you stand on -- although I have very strong opinions. My whole interview with you could be nothing but just ranting about that [laughs].We dont know whats next. And thats the beauty of it. It is more of an open-ended commitment. Its different, but thats also what makes it good. The last two years of my life have added so much more meaning to what Im able to apply to music. Becoming a dad is pretty huge; Im in the longest relationship Ive ever been in. All kinds of changes have happened for me. And all the material things that you can indulge in theyve all worn off. The only thing left is the music. And thats the reason you get into it in the first place.I could fucking care less if everybody downloads our album off the Internet. Were not in a position to be screwed by that at all. We have the one thing the Internet cant touch -- live music. If you can actually go out and play your fucking instruments, you wont be replaced by the Internet. If youre a good live act and you put on a good show, people will buy a ticket to see your show. For years, people were going Oh, Phish dont sell a lot of albums. Maybe someday well have some hit single or hit album by accident. But at this point, it cant hurt us. Before, it would have done a lot more damage, because everyone is expecting the follow-up. And if it doesnt sell, you just disappear, and people think youre done. Then the Internet comes along. If selling records is your bread and butter, welcome to the land of the doomed.I like being part of the minstrel class [laughs] go out and earn my alms by putting my hat on the ground. If people think youre worthy, theyll pay for your music by coming to see you live. There are just some things you cant improve on.

1 October 00Advertising and Our SocietyHow does advertising really affect our society? Magazine advertisements have a direct affect on our self esteem. Many of the ways the media affects society, especially advertising, is negative. Often magazine advertisements cause women to think less of them because they are not as skinny as the models that are glorified in these advertisements. This in turn often causes eating disorders in many of these women. Over the years we have become a society that is completely consumed with our self images. For a lot of people how thin and attractive they are is a main priority in their lives. The cause of this change in values has a lot to do with magazine advertisements. Nowadays if you look at a fashion magazine all the advertisements are filled with unnaturally skinny models. In the September 00 issue of Glamour magazine, mostly all the advertisements in the issue are filled with societies basic idea of what the so called "perfect" woman should look like which is basically tall, extremely thin and flawless. On page 10, there is an advertisement for Hard Tail clothing which shows four different extremely thin and attractive women in revealing clothing. Now is it wrong to have thin attractive women? No, but if it's all a person ever sees in a magazine then it begins to warp society's idea of what women should look like. Women start to believe that there is something wrong with them if they don't meet these perfect model standards. GalloMagazine advertisements often subconsciously give women warped idea's of what they should look like. On page 64 of Glamour there's an advertisement for Lycra which shows the backside of a slender women in skin tight jeans and the tagline just simply states "HAS IT." This article directly means that the jean she wears has lyrcra in them so she "HAS IT. But this advertisement is also subconsciously giving women the message that they have to look like that in order to "have it". Also on page 75 for a Paul Mitchell hair advertisement, there is an upper body shot of a beautiful women and the tag line says "HERE"S THE SKINNY" and in small letters at the bottom it says "Slim is in. Sleek is chic…..And all that's skinny. The Super Skinny." They advertisement is using the fact that society loves all that is slim and skinny to sell their product. They know that woman love the idea of being able to apply the term "skinny" to themselves even if for their hair.So what happens when women realize that aren't as thin and perfect as they supposedly need to be? They develop warped self images which usually lead to some form of an eating disorder. Women's extreme desires to look like fashion models and actresses have caused them to do unhealthy things in order to loose weight. One specific set of magazine advertisements is the Victoria Secret ads. The models in the Victoria Secret ads have become a standard of beauty most women desire to achieve. "Girls developed eating disorders when our culture developed a standard of beauty that they couldn't obtain by being healthy. When unnatural thinness became attractive, girls did unnatural things to be thin" (Bissell 1). We as Americans have become a society that is Galloobsessed with the superficial aspects of life. Our degree of success is measured by how much money we have, what car we drive, and how young and beautiful we look. So it is not that surprising that women are doing unhealthy things to achieve this level of aesthetic success. But regardless of whether or not it surprises anyone it is still extremely harmful to them.Over the years the number of eating disorders among females has grown tremendously. Many studies report that most of these women think that their disorders stem from the fact that they think they need to be thin in order to be found attractive. Allot of women even admit that the reason they become so obsessed with their bodies is because of the constant images in fashion magazines and on billboards. And once woman start on the viscous cycle of poor self image and eating disorders it becomes extremely difficult to break away from that mentality. Advertising is a very powerful tool, we are practically raised by the media, and it shapes most of the aspects in our lives. Whatever images and ideals advertisers choose to set forth will, therefore, directly influence how we think. We constantly see young beautiful men and women in these advertisements and we are led to believe that is how we should look. When we fail to meet these standards, we often cannot cope, and it often results in low self-esteem and eating disorders. "Through magazines, billboards, television, and radio, advertising decimates words and images throughout the public domain, thus blurring the distinction between the public displays of standards of success and self esteem and what, in the words of our students, are our 'personal' or private needs Gallo4to 'feel good about ourselves'" (Andrew ). It becomes extremely hard for woman to separate the images they see in magazines and how things should be in our daily lives. In advertising things tend to look perfect and we often can't help but try to carry that idea over to our own lives. But we need to learn the difference between real life and the captivating world of advertising and not let advertisements dictate who we are and what we need to look like.

In the her text, Popular Culture, Freccero states, "Science fiction most explicitly addresses the political, representing political fantasies through the imagining of alternative worlds, and thus invites the reading of ideological critique" (Freccero, pg. 111). The film Alien Resurrection is embedded thoroughly with representation of modern day cultural occurrings. In the film's case, it is tackling issues such as cloning and outside womb reproduction, such as test tube babies, and negative representation of women by degradation from the men. The social commentary is perfectly obvious the bad guys are the military-scientific establishment, cold, heartless, mechanistic, oblivious to the human consequences of their actions and what happens when women succumb to blunt sexism. This film picks up where Alien left off and certain people have saved some of Ripley's (Sigourney Weaver) blood and it appears that they have successfully cloned her after eight attempts. Not only have they cloned her, but they have fused her DNA with that of an Alien, giving our heroine the body and mind of a human but the strength and acid blood of an alien. The opening line of the film is Ripley saying, "My mother always said there are no monsters...but there are." You hear her say this as the camera pulls back and you see her being surrounded by scientists as they prepare to operate on her and deliver her "baby", an Alien queen that was implanted into the host, Ripley. That statement in the first 15 seconds of the film enunciates the tone and underlying message for the remainder of the film. Ripley, even though created by scientists, has sympathy towards these aliens. In her mind she knows that she must destroy them, but in her heart she feel pangs of guilt towards doing so, hence the apology to her "child" as it is sucked out the ship's window. This turns the film into more a voyage of self-discovery then a horror/sci-fi adventure. I think the film's message is that even though she was created by scientists, she still has emotions and cloning is simply uncalled for. Freccero states, "Alien was horrified by the blurring of the boundaries between nature and technology, further suggesting that nature might actually win out in the end in revenge for humanity's audacity at having dreamed that technology would bring transcendence" (Freccero, pg. 117). I think that this film is repeating this message by showing cloning in a negative light. Freccero states, "Technology has been and is viewed as a predominantly masculine domain, indeed as defining late-twentieth-century advanced capitalist masculinity" (Freccero, pg. 10). This is very present theme in the film, as the men, both the scientists and the pirates aboard the ship, repeatedly degrade the women verbally. Over and over throughout the film, sexualized comments are made towards the women that signal that in the future, "The feminine is constituted as a threat and an object of desire in the space of fraternal bonding" (Freccero, pg. 107). In one scene, we see one of the lady pirates in the driver's seat of the ship. A man pirate says to her, "No matter how many times I see a woman strapped in like that...it just does it for me." I think this comment signals that even though the woman is capable of doing exactly what the man is doing, she is kept in her place, a place that is dominated by men.

Help with essay on Alien: Resurrection

The text states that "The exercise of privilege over women, in the form of sexual violence, degradation, parody and selective exclusion, guarantees an important mediation between and among the men, a mediation that will keep them from turning toward and loving each other, a mediation that will prevent homoeroticism and produce homosociality instead" (Freccero, pg. 106). Homosociality is defined in the text as ...guaranteeing the control of social space by men only, while it also ensures that the fiction of a competitive structure will persist and eventually take over once the men themselves become patriarchs (106). One might conclude that the "patriarchism" occurs when the cloning is successful or when the queen is born from the cloned Ripley. If she is the alien's mother, one could view the scientists as being the father. The women are viewed as sexual objects placed on board the ship for the men's amusement. The men, the pirates and the scientists, have camaraderie in bashing the women together. I think they definitely view Ripley as a threat to their male hierarchy. She beats up several of the pirates as she is playing basketball and they become very angry at Call (Winona Ryder) after they discover she has been talking with Ripley and say she is a terrorist. The pirates view Ripley as a two-sided threat one that may be desired as well as feared. I find it interesting that in the first Alien film, the computer responded to MU TH UR (Mother). This is a "oedipalized relation to the mother as the first all-powerful female figure who dominates the infant boy" (Freccero, pg. 107). The film Alien Resurrection has the computer responding to FA TH UR (Father), which could signifies that perhaps the tables have turned and the men have gained control of Ripley's character and lessened her power. The book states, "One of the ways the patriarchy guarantees its reproduction and replacement, even from within the resistive and oppositional moment of fraternal bonding, is through a certain relation to women, the female body, and femininity" (Freccero, pg. 106). This is exactly what the men strived to achieve in Alien Resurrection total domination over women by means of verbal and physical abuse. Overall, after analyzing this film, I think it had little to offer in the arena of cultural context. It could have gone very deeply into several subjects, such as cloning, yet I feel it merely danced around them as to appease the mass Hollywood audience.

UNC exercised poor judgment by making Sells book, "Approaching the Qur'an The Early Revelations," this years required reading for first year students. It is one thing to read this on your own and quit another to have it required by your school. Its insensitive and shows misguided priorities.Sells wrote this book in 1 to translate the Arabic Qur'an into English for a western audience while still keeping true to the original text. While many Islamic scholars would argue that the original text can not be translated from Arabic, and any translation corrupts the original text, traduttore traditore (translator-traitor). I have more a problem with specific passages that were left out. Specifically suras 4, 5, and , which deal with the Islamic views of other religions. So students never read O you who believe! Do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends... (551); or So when the sacred months have passed away; then slay the idolaters... (5). He left out passages of a holy book to make it more digestible for a Judeo-Christian audience. Students are getting a watered down version of Islam which shows the good but none of the bad. While I do believe people should study this and other religious books whether it be to strengthen they're own faith or if they are genuinely looking for the Truth, "seek and ye shall find." But not as a required reading for a university and especially not so soon after /11. Godless, sick minded individuals did this, not a religion.

I dont buy into this mindset that Americans need to be introspective after /11, as if our country is somehow to blame for the callous acts. Instead of reading a book to understand the mindset of evil men, why not a book that shows the virtues of Americans. Why not a book about our triumphant over evil. A book that is challenging, historically relevant, and leaves readers proud to be American. I for one think that in light of recent events we as Americans need faith in ourselves and what we stand for, because if we forget then our enemies have already won.

Communication apprehension is far more than the first stage fright frequently found in speech classrooms, school assemblies, and drama productions. It is a pattern of anxiety, established often in the elementary grades, which can profoundly affect much or all of a students oral communication, social skills, and self-esteem. Preventing or alleviating communication apprehension for every student is a monumental if not impossible task. This paper examines some causes and consequences of communication apprehension and ways in which it can be diminished.Nearly everybody loves attention. When we were little we liked it when our parents paid attention to us. If a friend asks for our advice on a pressing personal decision and listens carefully to our ideas, we feel good or important. Strangely enough somehow the lines get blurred as some become afraid when they must communicateJames McCrosky first defined communication apprehension as an "individuals level of fear or anxiety associated with either real or anticipated communication with another person or persons" (Trenholm and Jensen, 000). This is an ever-pressing issue that deserves the attentions of teachers and researchers the like. In the United States alone, 0 percent of the population is suffering from a high level of communication apprehensiveness (Trenholm and Jensen, 000).

Communication Apprehension comes in many forms. For some, it is associated with interacting with others in interpersonal and small group settings. Most that suffer are more likely to experience communication apprehension while speaking in public. When exactly does communication apprehension begin and when can you notice signs? There are two sides of this argument, the biological or environmental perspectives. Professionals argue the physiological response associated with the anxiety feeling is attributed to the environment. On the other token we may be predisposed to communication apprehension, the nature side believes it is as innate as eye color. I believe there is a medium where the nature and nurture sides meet; we are predisposed to the high or low anxiety and our environment embraces or rejects these tendencies. Trenholm and Jensen argue communication apprehension is caused by the bodies' reaction to the environment rather than an innate problem. When an individual is in a situation where they must communicate in a new context they experience apprehension. We become aroused; palms sweaty, and we feel a burst of energy with an increase in our heart rate. The problem is we misinterpret the reaction as fear placing it with a negative emphasis. It makes sense that when placed in a similar situation, the person would go through the exact labeling process increasing their apprehension instead of reducing it (000). A contrasting approach to dealing with communication apprehension that had received little attention is the Myers- Briggs Type Indicator perspective. Those who believe in this theory view the severe speech anxiety is not a problem to overcome, yet a preference to not communicate. This indicates why some avoid communication and why these choices should be accepted rather than looked down upon. This gives new light given personality type preferences are innate and biological leading a connection perhaps communication is biologically based. A study was tested on the types of preferences across the four contexts of communication; public, group, dyadic and meeting. Major preferences deal with how we view our inner and outer world, introversion and extroversion. Extroverts get their strength from people and the outside world, they prefer to communicate and seek opportunities to do so. Introverts adversely introverts are more likely to be apprehensive as they draw from themselves, they have completely parallel focuses. (Opt & Loffredo, 000) it made sense that during the study finding shown introverts scored significantly high in their levels of communication apprehension across all four contexts. The relationship between how we perceive information is divided into two categories, sensing and intuition. Sensors could be prone to high levels of anxiety because they could be focused on the immediate experience of communicating and relying on their surroundings (Opt &Lofferedo 000). Sensors predictably scored high for communication apprehension. The last preference examined is how we process information we take in. thinkers have the ability to detach themselves emotionally from situations, leaving them less likely to be affected by anxiety. Feelers are highly apprehensive in communication situations because they may feel as if they could threaten their relationship with the person (Opt &Lofferedo 000). Feelers only showed high anxiety versus thinkers in the public speaking context. Opt and Lofferedo believes this could be explained by the less interpersonal nature of the public setting that produces anxiety. The tendency and need to avoid communication is only a problem through the eyes of an extrovert or intuitor's eyes. It is normal for the introvert to hold back, interacting as an extrovert only drains their energy. Our society places value on traits extroverts exemplifies. Communication apprehensions happens once introverts are forced to act as extroverts. Introverts use communication apprehension as a way to protect themselves against evaluation from others (Opt &Lofferedo 000). Comparable conclusions can be made for sensors; communication interactions place a threat onto their grounded world creating ambiguity. Apprehension again will arise when communicating puts them in a speculative situation going in contradiction of their instinctive preferences. Our culture stresses progress and intuitiveness characteristics more capable of the intuitor (Opt &Lofferedo 000).Nearly everybody loves attention. When we were little we liked it when our parents paid attention to us. If a friend asks for our advice on a pressing personal decision and listens carefully to our ideas, we feel good or important. Strangely enough somehow the lines get blurred as some become afraid when they must communicateThis severe anxiety towards communicating affects all aspects of the individuals' life, not only their interactions. Depending on the level of anxiety about communicating, CA can impact a person's entire life, from success in educational programs, careers, social groups to family life and friendships. So, it is an important problem to address. Watson and Bossley (15) state that 0 percent of people face some type of communication anxiety. We also know that many highly apprehensive students choose to drop out of school rather then face the fear of communication (Ericson & Gardner, 1). This intense fear also leads to students selecting college majors where they foresee less time communicating with less threatening audiences (Ericson & Gardner, 1). This apprehension has also been proven to hurt apprehensive students academically. Besides dropouts mentioned earlier Bourhis and Allen (1) did a meta-analysis of manuscripts that revealed a relationship between CA and measures of cognitive performance such as IQ, GPA, course and assignment grades, and standardized tests.Effective communication skill may not have developed because childrens parents seldom converse with them or they have not had much opportunity to interact with peers (Brophy, 16). This circumstance may explain some of the shyness seen in kindergarten and first grade or children starting school for the first time or changing schools may exhibit school phobia (Brophy, 16).Social anxiety can also develop as an ongoing reaction to repeated failure, mistreatment, or rejection from adults or peers (Brophy, 16). Some students adjust well and show good peer group adjustment and ability to interact socially with the teacher, but they might display CA when they are asked to answer academic questions, perform in public, or engage in an activity that they know will be evaluated (Brophy, 16).One last factor I will discuss which relates to CA is embarrassment. The reason most people get anxious when required to speak to a group is that they are afraid of looking foolish or stupid in front of many of their peers and important people (Kurtis, 000). Kurtus says the fear of their mind going blank or their lack of speaking skills will lower the opinion others have of them. This could ultimately lead to embarrassment. The underlying fear with shy people that makes them avoid communication is the fear of being negatively evaluated by others or humiliated. (Business Week, 1) So, someone who holds negative views of themselves and assumes others will too has set themselves up, unconsciously for social anxiety. It should be noted that while the effects of CA for the individual generally tends to be negative CA is not always detrimental. Low levels of fear can energize us to try harder and learn more. However, as CA is heightened, feelings of discomfort tend to increase and the willingness to communicate declines (McCroskey & Richmond, 10).As the behavioral response of CA is to avoid andor discourage interaction with others it is not surprising that CA has been linked to feelings of loneliness, isolation, low self esteem and the ability to discuss personal problems (Scott & Rockwell, 17). High communication apprehensive individuals have difficulty in forming and maintaining close relationships and when they are formed will try to 'hang on to the relationship for dear life'However, CA may still play a part when different cultural groups come together. When individuals find themselves in situations where their culture or sub?culture is in the minority they are said to be 'culturally divergent' (McCroskey & Richmond, 10). To be effective communicators in another culture the onus is generally on the culturally divergent individual to adjust to the communicative norms of the dominant group. Culturally divergent individuals may be likened to people who have deficit communication skills. Because they do not have effective communication skills, they tend to be much less willing to communicate at all for fear of failure and possible negative consequences. This may be particularly so when speaking a second language. Therefore, the difference between the culturally divergent person and the skill?deficit one is that a culturally divergent individual may have excellent communication skills in their own culture and within the confines of their own culture CA may not be a problem "Consequently remaining silent is considered a problem and silent cultures are interpreted as representing a high prevalence of communication apprehension." (McCroskey & Richmond, 10).The conclusion that we can draw from the research and studies that have been conducted so far is that communication is an ongoing process that involves constant changes within the people involved and their environment. When communicating with others, individuals are influenced and affected by many variables and CA may be the result of any number of different causes. The degree of CA that an individual will experience can vary depending on their personality type and the context of situation. Nonetheless, the notion that a high level of CA negatively affects an individual's success both academically and socially appears to be supported by the research.

Robert Louis Stevenson brings the possibility of another side of person to life in his tale of "strange Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde". He uses three narrators in the book to describe the tale of Dr. Jekyll, a respected, very good doctor who creates or as some would better describe it as bringing out the more Neolithic man in side him, in the form of Mr. Hyde. The most puzzling part of the book is that the full details of the story are not revealed until the very end of the novel. Until we learn the ultimate truth from Dr. Jekylls confession, we try to decipher (along with the main characters) who Mr. Hyde is ... and how he relates to Dr. Jekyll. At the end of the book, we discover that Dr. Jekyll had explored for some time that there are two natures in him self. For many years, he has repressed the more man like side. After lengthy thought, he came to the conclusion If each, I told myself, could but be housed in separate identities, life would be relieved of all that was unbearable". Unfortunately, Dr. Jekyll could not have possibly anticipated what problems his separation from a punctual well-respected man, into a living catalyst would cause. The existence of an evil and a good soul in one body bring forward a whole host of problems. The good, in the form of Dr. Jekyll is soon overpowered by the evil, animal nature of Mr. Hyde "ape like furry". Good and evil can no longer be clearly defined. When Mr. Hyde commits a crime, Dr. Jekyll tries to make up for the evil, but the situation is obscure. The question we must ask ourselves is whether Dr. Jekyll isnt just as much to blame as Mr. Hyde; or whether he is innocent, since he cant control Mr. Hydes actions. Dr. Jekylls possible innocent becomes more puzzling since the two identities are two halves of the same person ... and it was Dr. Jekylls anxiety to pull a cover on his own life and become his own test gunepig by exploring the possibilities of his two in one theories that has produced these horrible results in the first place. As Stevenson explores the depths of human psychology and challenges central Christian beliefs, and Charles Darwin's "the theory of evolution" we think about the fact we are all "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde", but due to our beliefs and aristocracy we have only been able to discover the Dr Jekyll inside us; we have been led to think that the Jekyll we have, is our good side but why not our adventurous? "Satan had once been the brightest and best of all the angles in heaven." Maybe Hyde is challenging Jekyll because he is bored of staying on the inside, he might feel that is potential is better severed out side where he can feel alive. But certainly conscience, as classically illustrated in the "Tom and Jerry" cartoons where there are two figures usually the good side an angel, and the bad the devil loom over the characters shoulders, and usually as we can expect from a classic cartoon the character has to experience and foresee the evil side before the good comes to settle. At one part in our lives we have committed sin and tried to cover up troubles with our Jekyll, but in Christian beliefs "good has the strong hold over evil" which is entirely true when Dr. Jekyll tries to restrain or kill off the Mr. Hyde in himself, but he doesn't realise that no one can not be truly one without being two. We need both Jekyll and Hyde to become one without both we are nothing. He cannot destroy that part of himself. As time goes on, however, Mr. Hydes appearance becomes even more disturbing. In his confession, Dr. Jekyll writes Help with essay on How does Stevenson explore the possibilities of the split between "good" and "evil" in "strange case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde"?

But when I slept, or when the virtue of the medicine wore off, I would lead almost without transition." the more Jekyll appeared as Hyde the stronger Hyde got but until Hyde was strong enough to overcome Jekyll his rage and depression built up in side, greater and greater until Jekyll would release him, then he would go on an outraged skirmish with no objectives to release his prejudiced hate towards Jekyll; hopping that his fault will result in Jekyll's fall. The idea of scientists who have lost control of their creation has be expanded on by the film Frankenstein, where the creation turns on the creator much like Jekyll and Hyde. The final end to both Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is death by poison. They could not live or congregate with each other, but they could not be fully separated into two single persons in two bodies. Dr. Jekyll says, in his final confession Will Hyde die upon the scaffold? Or will he find the courage to release himself at the last moment? God knows" Jekyll knows Hyde will result in the end of him he just doesn't know how long he has left to live, if he has any time at all the last period of life is usually to be spent as happy as I cant but for some reason Jekyll is in complete sorrow for his induction of Hyde into his life. "As I lay down the pen, and proceed to seal up my confession, I bring the life of that unhappy Henry Jekyll to an end. so curiosity did kill the cat after all

Anticipation permeates the air as young and old alike impatiently wait in line for tickets to the annual state fair. The dark night explodes with vibrant blues, greens, reds, and yellows that pitch and dive in well choreographed patterns. Tantalizing aromas and resounding laughter seduce outsiders to enter, making the fair the place to be on a brisk October evening. The towering Ferris wheel looms over the park acting as grandmaster of ceremonies, while smaller attractions intermittently flash and emit kaleidoscopic lights competing for attention. They illuminate tall pink promenades of cotton candy that are balnced carefully in the fists of tiny children. A carnival worker lounges lazily against a rusty ride nonchalantly waving at kids and flirting with teenagers. Enormous posters of sideshow freaks such as men with snakeskin flesh, mermaids, and two headed calves adorn the sides of trailers and boast two dollar admissions. The crowd creates a constant buzz from a multitude of individual conversations which is occasionally interrupted by shrieks of laughter that reverbrate as the roller coaster plunges down its track. The merry go round sings a music box tune as passengers squeal in delight providing a sharp contrast to the moans and groans of the gears due to the stress of incessant work. Employees assigned to games cry out to the mob imploring them to test their skills of bursting balloons with a dart or ringing a sea of goldfish bowls with a ping pong ball in the hope of winning a giant stufffed animal. Announcement telling of the pie eating contest and art exhibit blare from the intercoms causing an echo that leaves ones ears ringing.Food vendors scour the grounds enticing customers with a smorgasbord of mouthwatering treats. Aromas of buttery popcorn, deep fried corndogs, and sweet funnel cakes induce pangs of hunger and draw people to the counters like ants to a picnic. Periodically, these savory scents are tainted by the sickening odor of manure that wafts from the petting zoo.
