Between the years 187-101 was, the Victorian era, this was also the time of the serial killer 'Jack the ripper'. If you lived in London during the time of Jack the ripper, being wealthy was an advantage. The poor survived by working in factories and as common labourers, for example, brick layers, dock workers and prostitutes. Living Conditions for most, were disgusting, there was no sanitation and very poor drainage. Houses were crowded, which meant that there were usually seven or eight people sharing a room. Pubs were popular with the working class men. One pub in White Chapel, known as "Ten Bells" was thought to be a haunt of Jack the ripper. The poor sanitation led to outbreaks of diseases such as, Typhoid. Child labour was also very high, some children had to work at least 11 or 1 hours a day."The Speckled Band" is a pre-0th Century story and "Lamb to the Slaughter" is a 0th Century story. When "The Speckled Band" was written during the Victorian era. The society had high crime rate, as I have explained before. This inspired people like Arthur Conan Doyle to create characters like "Sherlock Holmes", who was a detective that solved crimes. Many people actually believed that Sherlock Holmes did actually exist, they led themselves to believe this because that way they felt safer in the society they were leaving in. The murder mystery genre is a type of fiction that deals with murder and its solution. While looking for that solution, suspense arises, which puts the main characters, searching for the villain in danger. There are many elements to a murder mystery, - a villain, murder, victim, weapon, motive, detective, suspense and clues. "The Speckled Band" and "Lamb to the Slaughter" are the two narratives that I have decided to analyse. Arthur Conan Doyle wrote "The Speckled Band" and Roald Dahl wrote, "Lamb to the Slaughter". Arthur Conan Doyle was born in 185 in Edinburgh, Scotland, he was a writer and the inventor of the famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. Conan died at the age of 71, in Crowborough, Sussex, England.

Roald Dahl was born on September 1 116, in Cardiff, Wales. He was a British writer of novels, short stories and children's books. His first book was "The Gremlins", which also became a film. He also wrote the following storiesJames and the giant peachCharlie and the chocolate factoryFantastic Mr foxThe BFG (Big friendly giant)He also wrote two autobiographies called "Boy" and "Going solo". "The Speckled Band" is about 'Helen Stoner' who is suspicious about her sister, Julia's death, which happened two years ago. Julia died in her room and complained about a whistling sound, her last words were "It was the speckled band". Helen has started to hear the very same whistling sound and is worried, so she is determined with the help of Sherlock Holmes to get to the bottom of this death and the strange sounds. "Lamb to the Slaughter" is about a happily married couple, Mary and Patrick Maloney, who are living a normal everyday life, but when Patrick comes home one day from work, he has something to tell Mary, and when he told her, she walked back into the kitchen, got a leg of frozen lamb and hit him around the head with it. Mary then made out she found him dead. The villain in "The Speckled Band" was Dr Roylott, who was Helen stoners, stepfather. Dr Roylott is an angry and violent man that had an uncontrollable temper. He is also a very strong man as you can tell by the quote, "For he is a man of immense strength and absolutely uncontrollable in his anger". Dr Roylott was not a popular person and as he had done a lot of travelling, he only had friends that were gypsies. He also had a strange passion for Indian animals. Dr Roylott is a huge man, with a large face and thousands of wrinkles, he had bile shot eyes and a high thin fleshless nose, which gave him the looks of an old bird of prey. He is a stereotypical villain because he is a man and men commit most murders, and he is also the father. The villain in "Lamb to the slaughter" is Mary Maloney. Mary is shown as the typical housewife. She is intelligent, bright, has a clean house, and loves her husband more than anything and she is pregnant."She took his coat and hung it in the closet. Then she walked over and made the drinks" You can tell that Mar y is at every beck and call of her husband and everything she does has to be for her husband. From all that you have heard about her you can already tell that she is not a stereotypical villain. She is described as having, beautiful, soft skin and lips with dark eyes and when you first meet her she is waiting patiently for the love of her life, Patrick. The main victim in "The Speckled Band" was Julia Stoner, but you could say that Dr Roylott was as well. Julia Stoner died at the age of 0. She and her sister, Helen were twins. Julia was an innocent young girl. Julia and Helen did all the housework and then Julia's hair started going white, as a sign of aging but the strange thing was, she was only 0 years old. The victim in "Lamb to the Slaughter" was Patrick Maloney. Patrick Maloney is a senior officer. You can tell that he has been a police officer for a long time because they have a certain schedule for everyday life, for example, going out on a Thursday night and having a drink when he comes home from work regularly at 10 minutes to 5. The detective in "The Speckled Band" is Sherlock Holmes. He is a very stereotypical detective as, he is a male, he is calm and content, he is observing, scientific and he goes back to the crime scene. The actual way in which he dresses is also very stereotypical, he has a hat and a long coat. Holmes also has a sidekick, which looks up to him and learns from everything that Holmes does. 'Jack Noonan' is the detective in "Lamb to the Slaughter" he is completely different and opposite to Sherlock Holmes. Jack is slow, not very observant and lets the personal relationship with the victim, get in the way of his actual job that he should be doing. You can tell this by the way he was speaking in a gentle voice and the way that he didn't let onto her that he was suspicious of her, being the murderer. From this you can see that he was not a stereotypical detective, and he was acting like more of a friend than anything else. The setting of "The Speckled Band" was a large manor house, in Victorian times, it was grey, lichen-blotched stone, with a high central portion and two curving wings. The windows in one wing were broken and blocked with wooden boards and the roof was partly caved in. The wing on the right hand side was slightly modern, you could see this was where the family lived. In "Lamb to the Slaughter" there is not much said about the setting besides from the house being warm, clean and well organized, and from this you get an image of the setting being a perfect household with no mess. The weapon in "The Speckled Band" was snake, which crawled through a ventilator and into the next room to kill its victim. The snake is kept in a safe and is trained to obey its master, who is Dr Roylott. "The Speckled Band" is referring to the poisoness-speckled snake. The weapon in "Lamb to the Slaughter" was a frozen leg of lamb, this was the first thing Mary, had she went into the freezer. Hitting her husband over the head with the leg of lamb was exactly like hitting him over the head with a steel club. In both cases the weapons are very strange and would not otherwise be used. The main feature that caused suspense were the short sentences, the use of adjectives and the title of each narrative, which made us wonder what each title meant. It was also clever the way in which Conan left, Key information until the end. All the clues that were left throughout the narrative left us guessing what would happen next. The snake turning on its master, Dr Roylott, and killing him had achieved Justice. "The speckled Band" followed the murder mystery genre, very well, it had all the elements that a murder mystery usually has and it gave the exact suspense that a narrative needs to be in the murder mystery genre. Overall "Lamb to the Slaughter" does not follow the murder mystery genre as, it does not have anything that a murder mystery required besides from the murder.

Macbeth is tragic play written by William Shakespeare in early 1606. The Tragedie of Macbeth was first published in the First Folio of 16, seven years after Shakespeare's death and seventeen years after the play was first performed. Perhaps it was written for a Scottish King James I, who was given the English crown for the first time in history. In addition, he was particularly afraid of witches. It is Shakespeare's most constricting and oppressive play; unpleasantly intimate human study of terror and paranoia, of the power of imagination and mistrust. In this essay, I would study Macbeth's personality in more detail in order to enable myself to conclude whether he was a hero or villain. In accordance with the traditional specification of a hero requires being, a person who opposes a conflicting force, either externally or internally, a conflicting force from its own state or another. In the opening scenes of the play, Macbeth has come to be seen as hero. However, we can find abundant evidence in the play that he was a villain more than a hero. In act I sc. ii, Macbeth is described by his king as" O valiant cousin, worthy gentleman" (Act 1, Sc. ) The quote mentioned above reinforces the idea that descriptions of Macbeth towards his king are positive. Moreover king is exultant at his cousin. Nevertheless, the descriptions are gory too as captain says

" Till he unseamed him from the nave to th' chops" (Act 1, Sc. )The quote results in Macbeth as being a fierce warrior and not faltered to kill anyone. Though, Macbeth has been seen as valorous, but I do not find any evidence supporting the view that his faith was as strong as his physical strength. The major turning point in the play occurs in Act 1, Sc., when three witches tell Macbeth three unforeseeable future predictions that meant in Macbeth would become king in the future. Broadly speaking, witches merely predict the future but they do not suggest Macbeth to kill his king to get the throne. Though Macbeth gets ambitious after learning the predictions, but I do not find any strong evidence to support the idea that he goes evil right away. When Macbeth reaches the castle, Duncan shows high respect towards Macbeth by saying "O worthiest cousin,The sin of my gratitude even nowWas heavy on me. Thou art so found before,The swiftest wing of recompense is slowTo overtake thee. Would thou hadst less deserved,Might have been mine. Only I have left to say,More is thy due than more than all can pay. The quote above conveys an image of influence of bravery of Macbeth over his king and all other noblemen, as they do not disagree with king. Afterwards as Macbeth informs his wife about the three predictions he has learnt, she expresses herself more ambitious than Macbeth. And when the Macbeth comes to meet her she has some evil plans ready. There is no evidence that Macbeth has any evil plans earlier. This quote by Lady Macbeth was short riddle following the killing plan of Duncan."O neverShall sun that morrow see." (Act 1, Sc. 5)In Act 1, Sc.7, as Macbeth shows respect and faith towards his king"He's here in double trustFirst, as I am his kinsman and his subject,Strong both against the deed; then, as his host,Who should against his murder shut the door,Not bear the knife my self. " (Act 1, Sc. 7) Another quote that shows that Macbeth has no intentions of killing his king as he wants to stay loyal to him"We will proceed no further in this business" (Act 1, Sc. 7)Lady Macbeth abuts Macbeth to kill Duncan to fulfil prophecy. The expressions and language usage ally Lady Macbeth with the sisters (witches), and I understand Lady Macbeth as witch, or her mind possessed by the devil, long before her sleep in Act 5, Sc. 1. Her extraordinary invocations of the 'you spirits / That tend on mortal thoughts' (Act 1, Sc. 5) especially pleads. When Lady Macbeth has no choice then she uses her tactics to stop Macbeth wimping out of Duncan's murder. Another evidence that supports the view as Macbeth being villain is found in Act , Sc.1, when Macbeth is having friendly chitchat with his dearest friend Banquo and on the other hand, he orders two murderers to kill Banquo and his Son, Fleance. The reason behind it is also based upon witches' predictions. Macbeth is at his worst when he murders Lady Macduff and her cheeky children. The reason behind murdering her and her babes is connected to witches predictions. As the witches warn Macbeth to be aware of Macduff. Macbeth cannot kill Macduff as he flees to England. In conclusion, I would reckon Macbeth as a valorous hero turning into a serial killer. He is also weak before Lady Macbeth. Though he knows that witches are evil but he never realise it. In fact, Macbeth made a misjudgement between the temporal (Good) crown and eternal crown (Heaven).

The character which I think that I identified with the most is probably the little boy, Steve. Steve reminded me a lot of myself when I was young. I would always obsess about baseball and I loved every aspect of it. Whenever I got something new or received something like a baseball cap or glove, I would never let go of it, it had huge sentimental value for me. Yes I believe that the father in this story coincidentally reminds me of my own father. My father was exactly like Dave, he worked very hard for all his money, and fully appreciated the value of every penny he made, and oddly enough I was the exact opposite just as Steve was. I would always play instead of work and my father never agreed with this, he always hated my obsession with baseball and tried to get me away from "useless sports".As I read my opinion on the father changed a lot. At first I thought he was strict and ignorant type of father, but as the story progressed, I realized that yet again Dave reminded me of my own father, deep down inside there was someone who will sacrifice his own beliefs just to make his own son happy. Some of the scenarios and actions which the characters were placed in had a very strong impact on the actions and decisions which they made. For example, Dave wouldn't have normally given in into his son's passion for baseball if it wasn't for the fact that they were faced with the painful truth that he led a poor family.

Some of the characters in my opinion were very stereotypical in this story. An example of this is the wealthy lawyer and son. Lawyers are often portrait as one of the morally wrong and snobby professions of life, and that they would do anything to get what they needed, in this case the baseball cap.

There is more to computer typing there's programming, troubleshooting, communications, and many of more uses from them people and I go through. People and myself has me know that there is more to computers then just typing more of it comes where in how other specific devices are used to convert data. Troubleshooting things such as viruses, networking, data loss, putting computer together, etc. has taught me more in depth about computers today. Having to do all of this has shown me that computers are a source of reflection of how it used and done with. Communications and new software development has made people has there life's saved is now another things used for computers to talk and send mail/messages. Everybody ignored it as a useless product that never existed in the world. When I used it was hard to use and understanding more in detail the entire major concept of how the programming was. People like myself had a hard time figuring out uses for it. It was like a machine in a hard way to describe in of all the technology/electronics they had made to a computer. Programming it in what to do on it was like typing, printing, and playing was the major thing that was done. It was nothing but just playing and doing working on a computer, which was made to do. It's like a disease spreading to all around the computers and has never stopped. Another problem is that a person and myself hate to loss data to the program you're working on for any type of project/work you're on. It's a major hassle to loss a big thing on a computer that you save and worked hard on. This is something people go through everyday to have these errors occur overtime. Having to delete important files from your computer to work has made them lose their work and the computer it self. This is why people have trouble thinking that it gets them frustrated. It the common problem everyone goes through everyday in using one. So computers back than were a big hassle to the people who bought them and encountered so many problems. Today now computers have made a communications and software cure for troubleshooting in the major problem people have in the computer system. In the communications they have a Chat line/E-mail to send about anything between you and your friend through a network computer. This is something people enjoy doing to communicate with anybody they know. It's a lifesaver now to send anything across a computer network in the world. The next thing is that software that can destroy viruses in detecting and protecting your computer has made a cure for it. People whom have troubleshooting in their computers now have software on the market see it's a big help. It's a new generation people now are safe with any software program that can be protected. The different between the reflections of the computers had shown many of what people encounter in their everyday life. Everything from the past has now made a lot of big changes. Now people are starting to get computer in a whole new different way for them to use it. Now new things added to the computer systems today has better communications and new software that helps people not to lose anything.

Underlying Lamb's essay is his desire to reevaluate Shakespeare's tragedies with renewed support for Shakespeare and the category of the author. This desire, certainly shaped in part both by his romantic contemporaries and his consideration of contemporary theatre, exemplifies well the detailed arguments of M.H. Abrams for the romantic shift from audience-centered to author-centered poetics. It is with this idea that Lamb obviates the judgments which have identified actors such as Garrick with the authorial power of Shakespeare, and with the "great or heroic nature" (117) of Shakespeare's characters. In the first instance, Lamb argues that the human actor can never be seen to have a "mind congenial with the poet's", for in the "power of originating", the author exercises an "absolute mastery over the heart and soul of man" (11). Even "the very idea of what an author is cannot be made comprehensible" to "unlettered persons", such as stage-players and audiences, "without some pain and perplexity of mind" (11). Secondly, Lamb's argument is extended to characters, where, inasmuch as an audience may come to associate, say, the character of Lear, with a particular human acting in his role; he "cannot be acted" or "be represented by a gesticulating actor", for he "is made another thing by being acted" (116) and, as McKenna notes, is "an ideal conception of the poet's imagination". Jonathan Arac has suggested that here Shakespeare is "the author par excellence, who plays the role in this argument that the deity does in theology". However, whereas in this argument the deification of Shakespeare separates the author from humankind, Lamb's next assertion polarizes humankind itself. Lamb distinguishes "from everyone else those few who could properly respond to Shakespeare" ; between, essentially, a man who is a "reviewer, and a man that is not a reviewer" (17). Enduring in this distinction is Lamb's demand for Shakespeare's category of authorship, only now, rather than with actors, Shakespeare's authorial sovereignty militates against the "common auditors", whose judgments, when "raised into an importance", are "injurious to the main interest of the play" (17), and, in turn, "vulgarly distort Shakespeare" . This, however, is no longer exclusively "the fault of the actor" or due solely to "something in the nature of acting" (11), but rather, it is relative to the auditors' reception of Shakespeare's plays, which, if they are "natural", are "grounded so deep in nature that their depth lies out of the reach of most of us" (117). Nevertheless, Lamb implied that the critical capabilities of any audience "called upon to judge" (17) were lacking, irrespective of the playwright, the play or its representation. This is because, unlike the critic, an audience fails to discern the especial value of Shakespeare's plays, for, although they are "in themselves essentially so different from all others" (11), "ninety-nine out of a hundred" of the auditors think that George Barnwell and Othello "are the same kind of thing" (117).

Clearly Lamb's arguments for the category of authorship and his consequent turn against the theatre and its audience, underwrote his main assertion, which distinguished between the reading of the plays and the seeing of Shakespeare on stage. However, it is significant that two other things - namely his long-standing experience with the theatre, and his close association with Coleridge and Hazlitt - also influenced Lamb's assumptions regarding the value of Shakespeare. In favour of reading over seeing, Lamb argues specifically that Shakespeare's tragedies are altogether the very least "calculated for performance on stage" (11) and it is alone in reading his plays, from the "vantage ground of abstraction", that we are "elevated" into a "state of sublime emotion" (115). Furthermore, reading Shakespeare "appeals…to the imagination" (15) and awakes in one an "intellectual activity" of "meditation" (1). Seeing a representation on stage, on the other hand, awakens merely an "interest or curiosity" in the "low and vulgar-natures" (1) of Shakespeare's characters. Moreover, stage representation drags "a fine vision down to the standard of flesh and blood" (11) wherein the audience, for whom "the imagination is no longer the ruling faculty" (14), is made to rely upon its "poor unassisted senses" (1).Some critics have dismissed Lamb's argument on stage representation as "mere whimsy and paradox" . More common, however, are dismissals which assert that here Lamb "entertains a bias against actors and acting" , or that his view is based merely on the "far from ideal conditions of the nineteenth century theatre" . Yet precluding these charges is Lamb's obvious "love of the theatre", which is evidenced best in the preponderance in his oeuvre of essays "devoted to the criticism of drama" , in his exemplary attendance to stage performances, and finally, in his own playwriting . As for the second charge, the plain "impropriety of raising a normative argument on the basis of inferences drawn from contemporary theatrical conditions" , as well as Lamb's own suggestion that the deficiencies in theatre are "inherent" and "essential" (117), has sufficed to compel most modern critics to establish that Lamb's views on stage-drama were indeed shaped, but far from determined, by the 'deficiencies' of his contemporary theatre.More so than his experience with theatre, it was Lamb's close association with the romantics which influenced his views on the value of Shakespeare. Lamb's essays on art shed light on his inherited romantic principles he talks repeatedly of the sublime and of a 'dramatic morality' ; the difference between "poetic" and "pictorial subjects" ; the subjectivity of the creative process , the compositional "unity" of a piece of literature, and the idea of a 'contract' between writers and artists, readers and viewers . Furthermore, the words of Hazlitt may demonstrate that Lamb's ideas on reading were not entirely unique "poetry and the stage do not agree together. The attempt to reconcile them fails not only of effect but of decorum. The ideal has no place upon the stage; the imagination cannot sufficiently qualify the impressions of the senses." Lamb's argument for reading, therefore, was shared by his fellow romantic initiates, though it was by them "never embodied in a single…essay" . Lamb's essay is therefore unique in its exposition, and as was earlier argued, it was Lamb's strong conviction regarding the category of the author which above all induced him, laying emphasis on reading, to buttress the value of Shakespeare. In its argument for the category of the author, Lamb's essay foreshadowed the "high and serious calling of literary criticism" for Shakespeare to be approached in an intellectually demanding form, which ultimately "triumphed over the tyranny of the audience" , with the restoration of the original plays. As is now recurrently suggested, it is no coincidence that "the modern canonization of Shakespeare…went hand in hand with the institutionalization of reading." And as the modern discourse directs more focus on the reading of original texts, our present critics "begin sadly to agree with Charles Lamb that we ought to keep rereading King Lear and avoid its stage travesties." But whereas Lamb said nominally that "The Lear of Shakespeare cannot be acted" (14) theorists continue to suggest this is for cultural reasons "Lear should be playable; if we cannot accomplish it, the flaw is in us, and in the authentic decline of our cognitive and literate culture." Yet, all in all, the strength of Lamb's argument for an intellectual deference to the category of the author and his imaginative preference for reading, has influenced pedagogical institutions against even his most compelling dissenters, for as Arac suggests, today "the terms through which our educational system teaches us to value literature are overwhelmingly more those of Lamb than those of Johnson". Abrams, M.H., The Mirror and the Lamp Romantic Theory and The Critical Tradition, LondonArac, J., 'The Media of Sublimity Johnson and Lamb on King Lear', Studies in Romanticism 6, Boston, 187.Bloom, H., The Western Canon The books and School of the ages, New York, 14Coldwell, J., Charles Lamb on Shakespeare, Colin Smythe, London, 178.Heller, J., Coleridge, Lamb, Hazlitt and the Reader of Drama, London, 10.McKenna, W., Charles Lamb and the Theatre, Colins Smythe, London, 178.Park, R., Lamb as Critic, Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 180.Ross, T., The making of the English literary canon from the Middle Ages to the late eighteenth century, McGills, Montreal, 18.Wimsatt, W.K., and Brooks, C., Literary Criticism A Short History, Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 170. The first 400 settlers under the new charter departed in 16 to start the Puritan colony of Massachusetts Bay, but not all of the Company were Puritans. Therefore events during the spring of and summer of 16 convinced them they could remain as noncomformist in the Church of England by leaving the country.Perhaps by oversight the companys charter made no mention of where the headquarters had to be located. In August the shareholders reached an agreement and bought out those who wished to remain in England So when John Winthrop set out with the next wave of some 700 settlers in March of 160 they carried their chartewr with them. Winthrop also replaced Endicott as governor of the colony.Massachuseetts Bay grew rapidly and continued this growth in spite of serious difficukties. The first winter 00 settlers died. When the next ships came more settlers decided to return to England. This was the only trajic winter that was faced by the young colony. As the rapid persecution of noncomformists in England continues so does the rapid immigration of the colony. By 160 the colony numbered by more than 000 settlers.Over the next several years the growth continued. Ministers in England who had been rejected also made the pilgrimage. Thomas Hooker and others became leader of the Puritan movement in the colony. The colonys charter granted them the authority to elect officers and to make laws for themselves. They then set up boundaries for their towns, created taxes and elected officials. Thus paving the way for democracy.

Like all sad murder stories, this one starts out with an evil dictator who lacks heart or emotion. Many peasants, soldiers, and foreigners died in 175-17 because of Pol Pots guerilla war group, Khmer Rouge which was responsible for a horrifying twenty-five percent decrease in Columbias population. The horror began to unravel in 16, when Pol Pot became the leader of the Cambodian Communist Party and was forced to escape into the jungle by Prince Norodom Sihanouk, the leader of Cambodia. Pol Pot then formed an armed resistance movement against Cambodias government, known as Khmer Rouge (Red Cambodians); which would later on be known for its guerrilla war attacks against Sihanouks government and the people of Cambodia. In 170, Prince Sihanouk was thrown out of office, not by Pol Pot, but instead due to an U.S. backed military coup. Reluctant Prince Sihanouk then joined with Pol Pot in opposing Cambodias new military government. Throughout 16 to 17, the United States intermittently bombed North Vietnamese sanctuaries in Cambodia, killing up to 150,000 Cambodian peasants. Khmer Rouge and Pol Pots popularity was starting to grow and more recruits where joining by the day. By 175, the U.S decided to withdrawn its troops from Vietnam and Cambodia, leaving Cambodias government weaker than ever. Taking advantage this opportunity, Pol Pots Khmer Rouge army, consisting of mostly teenage peasants, marched into Phnom Penh (Cambodias capital) on April 17 and effectively seized control of Cambodia.

Once in power, Pol Pot began attempting his own Super Great Leap Forward which was based on the teachings of Mao Zedongs (Chinas cultural revolutionary). The Super Great Leap Forward led Pol Pot to change Cambodias name to the Democratic Republic of Kampuchea and also pronounce that the society was to be purified. Little did anyone know that Pol Pots purification would cut Cambodia off from any communication to the outside world? Capitalism, Western culture, city life, religion, and all foreign influences were extinguished. Foreigners were expelled, embassies closed, and any foreign economic or medical assistance were refused in Cambodia. The uses of foreign languages were banned. Newspapers and television stations were shut down, radios and bicycles confiscated, and mail and telephone usage curtailed. Money was forbidden. All businesses were shuttered, religion banned, education halted, health care eliminated, and parental authority revoked. Cambodia was sealed off from the outside world in anyway. All of Cambodias cities were then forcibly evacuated. At Phnom Penh, two million inhabitants were evacuated on foot into the countryside at gunpoint. As many as 0,000 died along the way. Millions of Cambodians accustomed to city life were now forced into slave labor in Pol Pots killing fields where they soon began dying from overwork, malnutrition and disease, on a diet of one tin of rice (180 grams) per person every two days. Workdays in the fields began around 4 a.m. and lasted until 10 p.m., with only two rest periods allowed during the 18 hour day, all under the armed supervision of young Khmer Rouge soldiers eager to kill anyone for the slightest infraction. Starving people were forbidden to eat the fruits and rice they were harvesting. After the rice crop was harvested, Khmer Rouge trucks would arrive and confiscate the entire crop. Throughout Cambodia, deadly purges were conducted to eliminate remnants of the old society, which included the educated, the wealthy, Buddhist monks, police, doctors, lawyers, teachers, and former government officials. Ex-soldiers were killed along with their wives and children. Anyone suspected of disloyalty to Pol Pot, including eventually many Khmer Rouge leaders, was shot or bludgeoned with an ax. Ethnic groups were attacked including the three largest minorities; the Vietnamese, Chinese, and Cham Muslims, along with twenty other smaller groups. Fifty percent of the estimate 45,000 Chinese living in Cambodia in 175 perished. Khmer Rouge also forced Muslims to eat pork and shot those who refused. On December 5, 178, Vietnam launched a full-scale invasion of Cambodia hoping to end the Khmer Rouge attacks. On January 7, 17, Phnom Penh fell and Pol Pot was deposed. The Vietnamese then installed their own puppet government consisting of Khmer Rouge defectors. Pol Pot retreated into Thailand with the remnants of his Khmer Rouge army and began a guerrilla war against a succession of Cambodian governments lasting over the next 17 years. After a series of internal power struggles in the 10s, he finally lost control of the Khmer Rouge. April 15, 18, 7-year-old Pol Pot died of an apparent heart attack following his arrest. He was never brought to trial for the events of 175-7. http//www.tribalcog.com/ecard/cambodia/past.html
