I read the dialogue the Apology, written by Plato. In Platos Apology, the dialogue begins with Socrates on trial defending himself against an allegation made by Meletus, a fellow Athenian. Meletus has accused Socrates of corrupting the youth of Athens, by not believing in the Gods of the city-state. Socrates begins his defense by acknowledging that he also has other adversaries from the past and present. He states that their opposition is not a recent phenomenon. These people are ambitious, violent, and numerous; they are continually and convincingly talking about me; they have been filling your ears for a long time with vehement slanders against me (7).

Throughout his trial, Socrates addresses the true reason for his bad reputation. He challenges the allegations made against him, and declares that his accusers have not given enough thought to their claims. Socrates also explains why he had never held public office, and gives an overview on the life that he has chosen to live. He proclaims to his fellow Athenians that their obsession with wealth and the material world must never take precedence over the care of the soul. Also Socrates discusses his inevitable sentencing to death, and gives his truthful perception on death and the afterlife.

In his trial, Socrates discusses the true reason for his bad reputation. He implies that it had nothing to do with corrupting the youth or being an atheist. Socrates then tells the story of his friend Chairephon, who went to an oracle when they were younger. The oracle told Chairephon that no one is wiser than Socrates. Upon hearing this, Socrates made it his duty to question men with established reputations, who were believed to be the wisest in Athens. Since his youth, Socrates goal was to see if he could find one man truly wiser than him. Politicians, poets, and the ologians were among the many he pursued. Socrates found that after examining their moral values, they were not wise, as they had appeared. In my investigation in the service of the god I found that those who had the highest reputation were nearly the most deficient, while those who were thought to be inferior were more knowledgeable (6). Ultimately, Socrates earned a bad reputation because his scrutiny exposed the mens ignorance.

Most importantly, in his trial, Socrates makes a final attempt to reveal to the citizens of Athens that they are corrupting themselves by pursuing material objects and by having no concern for the state of their souls. Socrates constantly challenges the value priorities of his fellow citizens in the attempt to flip their priorities upside down. Socrates believes that people place too much value on wealth, honor, prestige, and the body. He says that these things are of no comparison to the most valuable, eternal, and highest good, the soul. Wealth does not bring about excellence, but excellence makes wealth and everything else good for men, both individually and collectively (). Socrates is saying that wealth is only valuable and worth having if you do something worthwhile with it, that people should use the less valuable, material goods in a way that is inferior with the most valuable good, the soul. Socrates attempts to reveal to the court that the soul is eternal and endures forever.

Socrates belief in the purity and goodness of the soul is truly revealed when he responds to his verdict, which is a sentence to death. He accepts the verdict with composure, as he had anticipated this. Socrates tells the jury that he cannot be harmed by the so-called punishment of death. It is only his physical body that can die, but his true nature is an eternal soul made of purity and goodness. He makes it clear that despite the courts verdict he will not resort to dramatic emotions. He does not do what other humans might do. For instance, pleading for more time or bring his wife and children to court so that the jury will have mercy on him. He says that his death sentence may well be a good thing, and those of us who believe death to be an evil are certainly mistaken. I have convincing proof of this, for it is impossible that my familiar sign did not oppose me if I was not about to do what was right (41).

In the conclusion of his trial, Socrates states that a good man cannot be harmed either in life or in death, and that man’s affairs are not neglected by the gods (4). Socrates declares that he has led a good life, a life of morality and virtue. He also states that although people have judged him and sentenced him to death, their opinions and verdicts will have no bearing on him once his body has perished. They cannot harm the most pure, true, and everlasting essence of his existence.

After reading Plato’s account of Socrates defense, the Apology, I was completely blown away by the power of Socrates words and ideas. The reading left me thinking about how I felt regarding what he had said about virtue, truth and the quest for both. The reasons Socrates believed that the unexamined life is not worth living for man. It is my opinion that he is correct in that view. Like many philosophers alive in his time, it was Socrates belief that virtue could only be attained through examination. Only through exploration can you really understand what virtue is, and begin to act virtuously. Understanding, as well as sharing, this information was very important goal to Socrates. The significance of examining and understanding our lives is far greater than one might think. Understanding and comprehending the behavior of friends, as well as of ourselves, enables us to have empathy and compassion for them. And allows us not to stand in judgment, which, in turn, allows us to live the moral and noble lives that Socrates had spoken of. Another belief of Socrates that supports his view is the idea that evil derives from ignorance and the failure to investigate or explore peoples actions. I believe this to be true, also. This idea also supports his beliefs on death. Socrates was not well liked because he explored his ignorance, and was eventually put to death because of it. Marie Curie once said, Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. That could sum up a great deal of Socrates position in the Apology why he was not shaken by death, why he spoke of his relationship with the gods, and possibly even why he felt the unexamined life is not worth living.

Throughout this dialogue I have discovered that there are two recognizable themes. One of those themes was death. Socrates attitude towards death is important to the history of philosophy. Socrates had said that death should not be feared, although the actions it may entail, should be resisted and scorned. He first gives the example of Achilleus the warrior, then of himself as a soldier, then of himself as a servant of the gods. There are important differences here though. Achilleus the warrior rushes forward, the soldier stays put with his comrades. Beyond this difference, which he does not mention, Socrates says that the fear of death presupposes a knowledge claim, that one knows it to be evil. Socrates rather says that he has no adequate knowledge of the underworld. Socrates does not practice philosophy as a way of bringing his fellow citizens in line with a superhuman knowledge of the total universe, including the disposition of the soul after death. Such is hidden to Socrates and to all philosophers.

In addition to death, ignorance was another theme to the dialogue. Socrates claims to have wisdom. Yet he also claims to know that he is not wise. Socrates tells the story of the oracles saying that no one is wiser than Socrates. Since Socrates knows he is not wise, he at first doubts the oracle and sets out to test it. He first finds someone who appears to be wise from many, and who accepts this attribute, that he too thinks he is wise. Under examination, the supposedly wise man turns out not to be wise. He is revealed as an unwise man. This unveiling of ignorance on the part of the supposedly wise man leads to hatred of Socrates. Socrates then reflects that he is wise, because he does not pretend to a knowledge that he does not possess. In other words, what he is saying is that wisdom lies in acknowledging his own ignorance. After an organized survey of Athens, including the politicians, poets, and craftsmen, Socrates concludes that the oracle was right after all and that human wisdom is worth little or nothing, and that the wisest is one who recognizes this worthlessness.

To conclude Socrates was a great man of his time. He proved that he was an intelligent man, that was capable of thinking and speaking for himself and believed that, if we do not occasionally pause and ask questions concerning the meaning of life, the foundation of politics and ethics, and so on, that we are not fully human. If we simply absorb the values and customs of our parents and our culture without ever calling them into question, we are no different than a log, which is floating down a river. The log is being controlled by the forces of nature and has no control over them. To be fully human, we must, at least occasionally, reflect, question, and critically evaluate. This is an essential part of what it means to be human. If we do not do this, we are no different than a non-living thing

Communication the world of business and in the world of technology is important for its

survival. With communication being a idea created by someone or something that is processed

into a medium that someone can hear, read or just see on the bus after a hard day of school and

the to end if off by being received by the audience and finally its mean goal is to leave a lasting

impression in that certain someones head for whatever reason. Communication in the world of

technology is one that includes banners on web sites to those annoying e-mails to get everyday

of your living life for no reason at all just to bug you and make a good day turn around to

something you wished you could end just because of those annoying e-mails.Communication to

businesses is something you probably see, hear, or read every living day of your life until you die

taking the form of advertisements in this case. As you may now know communication is

everywhere and chances are you have been force feed it since you were born so why not read on

to learn why this has happen to you instead of wondering why?

Communication is the life line of businesses that if cut off will lead to devastating results

to the unfortunate company. With companies main income coming from selling the public

products advertisements are something of the norm for them that helps builds it product fan base

and exposing it to the public without them actually having it in their hand but giving them a

tempting taste of it so they would go out and buy the real thing to have and to hold for the rest of

their life just because of that one ad in the bus that shows the rich man tell you to buy it because

he says he uses it which he probably doesnt but that is why he is rich and will stay rich. Another

reason why communication is important is because like in a good household communication is

key to build a strong relationship this point can be put to use in companies as well. With a

employer having the option to brief the whole staff of a certain point in just seconds with a

simple e-mail this can raise productivity and worker moral with just a few simple clicks. By

keeping employees informed leads to less problems with misunderstood instructions and loss

time and money. Conference phone lines have lead to the end of business meetings that meant

time had to taken out of important peoples lives that could of been spent doing some productive

instead of sitting in a office all together so their points could get across about whatever but now

this all can be done from the luxury of being in the car or at home or halfway around the country.

In the world of technology communication couldnt have been more important for its

expansion and money making capabilities. With e-mails becoming more important in peoples

lives its become more important than sending someone you those annoying pornography e-mails

but it has lead to multi million dollars deals being confirmed half way around the world from a

remote location where a phone line is something of the past and a conference meeting is

something of a dream. By communicating technology helps itself expand and grow spreading its

wings and flying away to form new bonds all over the world with updating new software to

helping people with electronics problems communication helps everyone become up to date from

around the world forming together to make one big connection with everyone being connected

and sharing ideas together in unison. Communication is also very important to technology in

that with expanding communication needs technology gets to expand as well raising to the task

of for filling these needs and raising the benchmark which leads to everyone being happy.

With main idea of this essay being that communication is important to the world of

business of the world of technology and by myself giving statements and metaphors to support

my main point there are many more key points on either topic but was left you due to personal

reason that will remain secret.Would you of thought that communication would support the

world becoming the backbone in which we use to support our selves and let ourselves be known

as a voice.

Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels a book about Lemuel Gulliver and his adventures around the world and the cultures he comes in contact to. The use of satire in Gulliver’s Travel is to promote self-knowledge to all who read it. The political aspect of Gulliver’s Travel is a mirror image of the French and British political practices during this time when Swift wrote Gulliver’s Travel. Human nature in Swifts Gulliver’s Travel’s reveals the wisdom of the few and the follies of the others

Gulliver has just returned from another adventure to a land of forty-foot tall human beings. He became a circus act for the queen of Brobdingnag and sees that the Englishmen in the Brobdingnags. He sees the Englishmen in the Brobdingnagians because he is one and sees that they are self aware, kind to all beings and that they do what is common sense. When the king questions Gulliver, Swift starts to gloat about their laws, their constitution and the military glory, which they have received, the king concludes that there is no justice and no community pride at all in England and says that they are “the most pernicious Race of little odious Vermin to ever crawl upon the surface of the Earth.”(II, Vii, ) The king showed Gulliver their flaws a society to inform him that it is ridiculous to gloat about a society that awful and as a representative of a society like that of England’s he should be condemned. Swift telling us this, one can conclude that swift was upset about the British political system. Gulliver uncovers that he has become a Lilliputian in the eyes of the Brobdingians and that he has a greater self-knowledge of why the Lilliputians where afraid of such and enormous being. Their social and political system was based on how well someone could juggle balls or how high someone could jump and the emperors entire being to destroy the neighboring kingdom just because they would not break a silly egg at the small end. The Lilliputians use their political monarchy the upper class and nobles to do their bidding of wrong. Their strict laws for Gulliver are the same way that the British monarchy did and used other people to do what they thought need to be done. Gulliver is too much of a resource hog for the Lilliputians to handle and they decide that he, being five times bigger than they are, is to be blinded and slowly starved to death. The British monarchy did the same with people who have over exhausted their resources as a country and where punished for serving them. In the fourth book Gulliver comes to an island that is inhabited by Yahoos who look like dirty human beings and Houyhnhnmians who look like horses that walk upright. The Houyhnhnm have a complete and perfect democracy of the intellectual type. They Houyhnhnmians are very intellectual and are not materialistic. The Houyhnhnmians is a utopia to Gulliver because they do not feud over materialistic objects or land. The Yahoos are the exact opposite they fight over every little thing but they don’t know how or what to use it for. The Yahoos are the barbarians of the island while the Houyhnhnm are the peaceful philosophers of old Greece. In this society Gulliver is not criticized for the actions of the country he comes from he is held in high regards that he is highly knowledgeable person. The reason he is regarded so highly is that the Houyhnhnmians do not have a word for evil.

Swift uses Human nature in Gulliver’s Travel to show the wisdom of the few and the follies of the others. The Lilliputians and the Laputians are the people who have the most defects in Gulliver’s Travel. The Laputians use science to rule their lives and cities. Gulliver finds that their occupation has turned them into zombies whose only purpose is to learn and construct new ways of thinking and solving problems. When asked a question they have to be beaten to get a response out of them. Gulliver is telling us that if modern science is the only concern of the society, that it is wrong in doing so because it will not allow for freedom. One of the follies of the Laputians is that their eyes face different directions, one faces inward while the other faces toward the zenith. They have a very particular way their food is served. In Lilliput the way that they choose who are the nobles and high priests are absurd. The kings stupidity is to destroy Belfuscu solely on the basis that they did not want to do something one way. They pilgrims did not like the way things where ran in England so they came to a new country and rectified the problem. England then came and tried to control these people but could not. England then declared war on them because they didn’t want to obey they king. Lilliput did the same thing Belfuscu did not want to be ruled by someone who will not let the Belfucsians to break an egg one way. The yahoos who want every thing and don’t like to see others taking possession of anything. They are needy people who have an unlimited desire for gold without any idea of what they are going to use it for. The Houyhnhnmians do not need any politics because the people are so logical and accept their roles that there is no need for over bearing rulers. Among the Houyhnhnms equality of women and virtual community of women and children. Gulliver concludes that the Houyhnhnmians have no god is because they do not believe what is not permanent, eternal or cannot be seem. The Brobdingnagians are people who use common sense to solve problems. Gulliver sees that the nature of the Brobdingnagians is to do what needs to be done with little or no punishment if needed.

CHAPTER THREE

BUSINESS IN PINE ISLAND

The Pennington/Milam Store and Post Office

Almost all of the residents of Pine Island were either farmers when they came to Pine Island or they became farmers after they settled there. There were a few exceptions, but even the exceptions usually if not farming to some degree, at least had a large garden, chickens and a few cows.

Write your Pine Island research paper

One of the first exceptions to farming was Duncan D Robertson who owned the combination Prairie View post office and a small general store. It was located on the south east corner of The Old Houston Highway and Cochran road. The house with two bed rooms, a kitchen, dining room and a shed room was built of rough, unpainted lumber. .

The Store and post office section was remembered by James Elisha Pennington, John Wesleys son, as a twelve by twenty room attached to the northwest corner of the house making the building L shaped. .

Lucille (Milam) Daut, John Wesleys grand daughter, remembers that it was roughly twice that big and divided in half by a wall with the store in one side and the post office in the other side. .

Both of them lived there, James from 187 to about 114 and Lucille from 10 to 14.) Lucille has a photograph of the front of the store showing a typical late 1800s wooden store front with a porch across the front and a false front hiding the roof. The porch has six posts supporting the front of the porch roof. Judging by the automobile parked in front, the posts are about 6 feet apart making the store twenty four feet wide. Neither the store or post office section had a ceiling except for boards loosely laid on the ceiling joists to hide the rafters and provide storage space. .

John Wesley Pennington bought the store in 187 from Duncan Robertson. Duncan had been appointed the first postmaster on May 0,18. Will Cameron replaced him as Postmaster on December 1, 186. John Wesley Pennington was appointed as the postmaster on February 8, 101 and Johns wife, Francis, replaced him as postmistress on October 8, 10 after John died. .

Francis and the children continued to operate the store until they closed it in 117 and used the space to enlarge the post office. Francis resigned as postmistress in 114 and Mamie (Pennington) Milam, her daughter, was appointed the new postmistress on October 0 114. Mamie held the position of postmistress until December 1, 18, when the office was merged with the Hempstead post office. .

Mamie had the old post office and living quarters torn down in 14, leaving the post office section as a separate building to be used until the new one was finished. She had a new house built with three bed rooms, a living room, dining room, bath room, kitchen and two large porches. The new post office was included into the northwest corner of the home. Their nearest neighbors, the Barnetts were kind enough to let the Milams stay with them at night until the new house and post office was completed. .

The house was sold to A.W. Randall about 140 and was is still used as their home until they died a few years ago. It is currently (1) lived in by one of Mrs. Tapscotts nephews. .

The store and post office served as a multipurpose community meeting place in its early days. It was started as the Prairie View post office but also served the citizens of Pine Island. Black citizens living in the area picked up their mail at the post office, but mail addressed to the personnel and students of the college was picked up by a special carrier and distributed by the college mail room. The same carrier picked up the outgoing mail from the college and delivered it to the post office. It is hard to imagine now, but the small post office did a huge amount of business in the early 100s, requiring two or three clerks. .

Lucille (Milam) Daut has pictures of the family car (an open top model T) parked in front of the post office. It was used to carry the mail bags on the one mile trip from the depot to the post office. One picture (taken near Christmas) shows mail bags stacked about six feet high in the rear seat, stacked on both running boards, on the front fenders, in the front passenger seat and on top of the hood. That was the second load. Lucille stated that during the holiday seasons around Thanksgiving and Christmas the mail sometime ran 100 bags per day. Of course most of the bags held packages, presents for the holidays and goods ordered from mail-order sources, rather than letters. .

The area citizens used the store as a gathering place to exchange local gossip and receive news of the outside world. It also allowed people to buy the few necessities needed between the weekly or monthly trips to town or for many. The store, although small, allowed them to delay trips to town for weeks or months. .

John Garrett also became a merchant and operated a store in Pine Island for a few years, in the first part of the 100s. He had a small store next to the depot, about a mile west of the post office, where he sold groceries and sundries along with gasoline and kerosene. It was located between the railroad track and the old Houston highway, directly across the road from Frank Echols farm. .

After John Garretts store started doing well, Frank Echol decided to build a competitive store across the road from Johns store. Frank and John were very strong (bitter?) competitors for a few years until Franks store caught fire and burned to the ground one dark night, ending the competition. It has been said that both stores had bullet holes in the front walls from unknown sources. Shortly after, John Garrett moved his business to Hempstead .

The last store (actually filling station) operating in Pine Island was during the thirties was operated by Tom McCarvel. Toms store was also located on the north side of the Houston highway but was just west of Pine Island road. .

Buster (Frankie Lee) Milam built and operated an automobile repair shop in Pine Island in 16. It was originally located on the old Houston highway across from the Railroad crossing by the depot. It was later moved it to the southwest corner, across Cochran road from and facing the Post Office. One of his early mechanics who still lives in Pine Island was J.T. Jaggers. In later years the old building was sold and moved once again, to Waller. .

Although he was not a resident of Pine Island, G.K. Frenkil operated in the area on a semi-regular basis in the early part of the 100s, selling vegetables and fruits from a horse drawn wagon. Mr. Frenkil who had immigrated to Texas from Germany worked and saved his money until he could bring the rest of his family to the United States. He lived in Houston when he first started his route, but after a few years he saved enough money to move to Hempstead and start a small store and later added another store. .

Though not actual a Pine Island business, the Southern Pacific depot and Railway Express Agency was located on the old Houston highway about a mile west of Cochran road until the early 10s. At that time the whole building was moved to a location just west of the railroad crossing at the Prairie View college road (Cochran Rd.) where it stayed until rail passenger service stopped and the building was sold and moved.

Throughout modern Global history, nationalism has played both positive and negative roles. The Latin American revolutions are a prime example of what a negative effect nationalism can play on a nation. Although through the unification of Italy, nationalism has also proved to have a positive effect on a nation. In both of these examples, nationalism has later impacted history in both a positive and negative way.

Throughout the years of 1800-1850, various revolutions broke out in Latin America due to the ideas of Nationalism. When the Napoleanic wars occurred in Europe, they disrupted the Spanish control over parts in the Americas. In this time people in the colonies adopted ideas of liberalism and nationalism, which helped them in gaining their independence.

The efforts of many leaders in Latin America, particularly Simon Bolivar and San Martin, is what eventually ousted Spain from South America. Many of the Spanish colonies had gained their independence by 1850. Yet after the grand ideas of nationalism wore off, the people were merely left with empty pockets and little pride to show for it. The wars and brutal fights for independence had tremendously devastated the people’s cities and countryside, also leaving trade in the nation in great upheaval.

A dream of a united Latin America or “Gran Columbia” fell through and by 180, divided into separate countries such as Columbia, Equator, and Venezuela. The Ruling Elite was formed which was the only form of government including Catholic clergy and Creoles. These people had fought many revolutions in the name of Enlightenment ideals yet they continued to have political, social, and economic systems that resembled pre-Revolutionary times. In the end, most people remained illiterate and the economy stayed agriculturally dependent, causing little change in Latin America. These revolutions would continue to effect history in that Europe, near the same time, caught on to these nationalism ideas and used them in a positive way.

Order custom research paper on Nationalism

On the other hand, Nationalism built nations as well instead of just doing harm. For example, the unification of Italy was a result of the positive influence of nationalism. The vast territory of what is now Italy, was split up into providences of Lombardy, Venetia, the two Sicily’s, and other small states. While various countries ruled them, by 1848 rife Italians grew tired of living under foreign rulers. As a result, leaders such as Giuseppe Mazzini, Camillo di Cavour, and Giuseppe Garibaldi helped gain control of different parts of Italian states and unify them using the ideals of nationalism.

By 1870, most of Italy was unified and although there were some negligible problems, Italy remains the same in the present day country. Obviously, the nationalistic feeling became an increasingly significant force for self-determination and the unification of Italy. As a result, other countries such as Germany became unified as well and remain the same in present day as well.

Consequently, both a negative and positive effect of nationalism was cast on two different examples. In Latin America, the ideas of nationalism broke apart colonies from Europe and eventually caused poverty and resulted in the same type of government as before the French Revolution. On the other hand, nationalism played a crucial role in unifying all of the Italian states into becoming present day Italy. Apparently, the political, social, and economic effects of nationalism have lasted throughout history in these given examples.

The popular movie Top Gun coined a phrase that reads I feel the need, the

need for speed. Many drivers today would agree with that phrase. Speeding is

one of the most common ways that people break the law. When people break the law

there are unpleasant consequences. A speeding ticket is an effective form of

Order Custom Essay on Cause and Effect of Speeding

discipline, in terms of time and money paying for a ticket, traffic school, and higher insurance rates.

Paying for a speeding ticket is an unpleasant experience. A ticket can be

outrageously expensive depending on how fast you were speeding. Some states

charge ten to twenty dollars per mile an hour over the speed limit. The officer

assigns you a day to appear in court, if you choose to fight the ticket rather

than pay the fine. Waiting in the courtroom to see the judge can be a very long and painful process. The wait is long, and the company can be frightening. Once

you plead your case; you generally end up paying the fine. This only leads to

another line, and another wait. This has to be the most unpleasant part of a

speeding ticket.

In addition, paying for traffic school is also a disagreeable experience. If you

waited to see the judge, you may be on your way after paying the fine. If the

judge is kind, and offers a traffic school option, the unpleasantness continues.

Usually the traffic school is nowhere near to the courthouse, which causes you

to search to find it. You must endure the nine hour course after paying for the

privilege of attending. This is a class most people would have never taken if

given the chance. The unpleasantness associated with a speeding ticket is almost

finished when you have completed the course.

A reoccurring reminder of a previous mistake is evident in higher insurance

rates. Most insurance companies feel that speeding tickets make someone a higher

risk; so, to offset the risk they raise the premium, which means it is more

expensive to obtain insurance. If the insurance company decides to raise your

rates by only ten dollars, a month, it can have a lasting effect. When the ticket falls

off your driving the record, usually in three to five years, you have spent more

than one thousand dollars more than if you had not been speeding. The insurance

company raises your rates with each ticket, until they cancel the policy. This

alone makes it worthwhile to obey the law.

A speeding ticket is an effective form of discipline with court, with traffic

school, and with higher insurance rates. The deterrents for speeding are not all

outwardly noticeable until you have been through the process. Once you have a

speeding ticket experience, you may be more careful to obey the law.

Is Prophecy Possible?

Prophecy is not just possible, but it is an everyday part of your lives. To be a prophet, you do not have to have some innate born ability. All you have to do is have an active relationship with the divine influence, and He will speak to you and through you. Prophecy is the ability to predict an event, as John the Baptist did with Jesus. Though, believing in prophecies also carries some weight. Some might argue that to be able to predict our future is striping us of our freewill.

Another point to keep in mind is prophecies are not any genetic ability, but in most all cases, prophets are divinely controlled through God and transmit His message orally or through writings. Such as, when the King Nebuchadnezzar had a bad dream and woke up in a cold sweet, “So the king summoned the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers to tell him what he had dreamed.”(Daniel 11). But all the kings’ men couldn’t tell Nebuchadnezzar what his dream meant. Since the king was an unforgiving man, “The king replied if you do not tell me what my dream was and interpret it, I will have you cut into pieces and your houses turned into piles of rubble.” So the men of the king knowing of Daniel’s abilities sought him out. Upon hearing the news Daniel went to the king and asked for more time. That night Daniel prayed about the matter and in the morning was given the answer to the kings question by the angel Gabriel. This story alone makes evident that prophecies are not only real but are real in our physical, mental, and spiritual world. No where in this story does Daniel have a lack of freewill. He actively and consciously sought the answer from, which, “God” replied and will reply if asked. So to the fact that God knew that Daniel was going to ask him for the answer is really irrelevant because Daniel didn’t know he was and, therefore, still made the choice.

Order custom research paper on Is Prophecy Possible?

The last paragraph represents a single event of prophecy. There are also reoccurring prophecies that many people have like the coming of Jesus. John the Baptist was probably the biggest advocate of this around the time of Jesus’ life. But previous to him there had been multiple prophecies of the coming of Jesus, like the twelve Minor Prophets during the time of Jerusalem c.750-586 BC. There were Prophets throughout time. An example was the Mayan Prophecies. They predicted the coming of Hernan Cortes, but mistook the prophecies thinking that Hernan Cortes was going to be Quetzalcoatl a god, who would bring an end to there empire. As well as prophesying the coming of Hernan Cortes, the Mayan Calendar points to December , 01 as being the end of our present age.

Even with all that has happened in our past, people fail to link the past to the future and say, that all thoughts prophecies happened in the pasted, and don’t occur today. Though the action of “God” are unknown to us this is, “For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words.” (1 Thessalonians 416-17) This meaning, even though you may not know if your in control of your own life or not, you can control the effect you have on those around you. Thus creating freewill in the world.

Poetry is defined as the art of writing or speaking, in a rhythmical verse in order to express beautiful, imaginative thoughts. It aims to seek understanding, as it is the mark of human nature. Poems are expressed in a clear manner that directly indicates to the responder its main concerns in relation to the period of the poem. The following poems are selected as part of an analysis for this essay, “Poor soul, the centre of my sinful earth” is written by Shakespeare (1564- 1616) in the Elizabethan period and “When I have fears”, written by John Keats (175- 181) in the Romantic period.

The poem “Poor soul, the centre of my sinful earth” is related specifically to the Elizabethan period. This poem introduces many of the themes that will define the passage of human life in time. It attempts to explain the nature of time as it passes and it acts on immortality. The use of dense writing is created throughout the whole poem as it is shaped by a variety of ideas expressed in more depth. It manipulates the audience to feel a certain way. This is created through the communication of techniques, language, use of lofty moral ideas soul, eternity, death and a range of further aspects. There is no use of lame ideas applied within the poem, thus the writing is based on delicate idealism.

Order Custom Essay on Shakespeare poems

This poem is expressed formally, which conveys a sense of seriousness. It is mainly based on ideology, as human beings are depicted as naïve and always looking towards the positive side of life. It displays a deeper emotional side to everyone’s lives and displays truths that are known but not always stated. This poem introduces many of the themes that will define the passage of human life in time and death, which is inevitable. For instance, “Why so large cost, ……...is this thy body’s end?” implies that it is useless spending a great deal on your image and appearance when everyone will eventually reach death and be consumed by worms.

Rhyming couplets is used throughout the poem to provide emphasis and raise importance of the ideas expressed. It also binds the lines, thus providing structure. This is shown in the lines 1 and , and 4, 5 and 7, 6 and 8, and 11, 10 and 1, 1 and 14.

The poem used the technique representation. This is quoted in lines to 7, “ Why dost thou pine within and suffer death, painting thy outward wall so costly gay……….fading mansion spend?” “Poor soul, the centre of my sinful earth” is a representation of part of the cycle of human life. It is a construction because the meaning created is not what humans tend to recognize and believe, as they are ignorant and facing reality is not their first preference.

John Keats, a poet of the Romantic age, writes the following poem “When I have fears”. Poetry in this period is imaginative and fancy free, reflecting all that is spontaneous in man. This poem is specifically emotional as his expressions display a sense of fear, death in particular. He conveys a philosophical attitude towards life and death, with implications of his unpleasant experiences through life. This probably caused his poems to be more meaningful and made him fear of the future.

The tone of the poem can be classified as serious, sombre and mournful. The attitude is reflected throughout the poem. Readers will decide on the tone from past experience and contextual clues. For instance, “before my death I do not see you and never experience love then when I do die, when I look at the shore of the world I leave alone I wonder if my fame and love I feel will never fall or disappear” is clearly recognized as relatively serious and sorrowful thoughts. Keats was emotional about leaving the world without people recognizing his work and afraid that that if he did not write poetry then he would not be able to go to his grave believing in himself.

“When I have fears” is presented as a fairly subjective poem. Keats used “I” as a representation for his character and expressed his feelings and thoughts perspectively. In the first line, “When I think of death” and the effect of this is that it sounds personal. It gives the impression that the poet is talking to us directly and we are immediately invited to think of the persona.

In conclusion, both poems “Poor soul, the centre of my sinful earth” and “When I have fears” reflects the main concerns of the period it was written in. Aspects of poetry in the Elizabethan period were the seriousness of purpose and lofty moral ideals. This corresponds to “Poor soul, the centre of my sinful earth” as the tone and expressions in the poem are serious and sophisticated. Poetry in the Romantic age was based on human life with its sorrows, which is identical to the meaning communicated in “When I have fears”.

World War Introduction

World War

Introduction

World War was one of the many wars that occurred during the 0th century.

During

this brutal war many countries, people, and history were changed. The factors

that

encourged the Germans and Japanese forces allowed them to take over other

countries

and kill many of people. Now, years later, from a different point of view, the

Germans and Japanese accomplished nothing but just killing innocent people.

The

greediness behind the Germans and Japanese in the 0th century would change

everybodys

lives forever.

How Did This War Start

The Germans had a powerful army in the 10s. They had a very powerful leader

named

Adolf Hitler. He was a greedy man who wanted everyone blonde hair, and blue

eyes. He

wanted everyone the same and to be the only leader in the world. Hitler started

his

conquest for land in 18 when he annexed Austria. He followed this by

threatening

Czechoslovakia. When Hitler increased his demands on the Czechs, war seemed

almost

certain. The British and French had meetings with Hitler and Mussoluni but they

could

not stop them from putting demands on other countrys. Soon after the meetings

Hitler

captured Czechoslovakia and seized a former German port. He moved on by putting

demands on Poland and the Polish Corridor. In September 1 France and Britain

agreed to support Poland and they soon declared war with Germany.

How Did The US Get IntoThe War

First of all Japan has no natural resources in their country. So being that

replied on their oil products from the US. In July 7 141, President

Roosevelt

stopped all trading with the Japanese. That meaning now that Japan has no fuel

to run

their military forces. Japan forces then went and attacked the East Indies and

took

over all of their fuel. Shell was the company that owned most of the fuel

products in

the East Indies. Shells head office was in England which led European forces

to be

in the war against Japan and Germany. When the US stopped trading with Japan

they

took this as a hostile act but, Japan still tried to make peace with them. A

Japan

ambassador even asked for a peace discussion with the secretary of state. The

meeting

did not go threw with the nations. Japan then attacked Atu (an island off of

Alaska) in hopes to draw the American forces up North. Japan was wrong , but

soon

after this they planned out a sneak attack on Pearl Harbour (a military base for

the

Americans in Hawaii). The Americans had a small idea that the Japanese might

attack

them. On the Morning of December 7, 141 a flight of planes were detected, but

the

people in Pearl Harbour were told that they were US fighter planes coming in

from

California. Soon after that a Japanese submarine was discovered in the waters

South

of Hawaii. An American destroyer was sent out to destroy the submarine, which

it did.

Soon after that the planes that were detected earlier were Japanese forces.

They

launched their bombes on Pearl Harbour and destroyed /4 of the air crafts, all

8

battleships, and 00 men. The US had no planes in the air, or anything else

ready to

fight. After the bombing the planes from California had arrived only to see

Pearl

Harbour in black smoke. President Roosevelt wasted no time as he asked congress

to

declare war. On December 8,141 war was declared on Japan.

What Was The Nature Of The War Between The Us And Japan

At the start of the War Japanese forces were very confident of winning the War

against

the Americans. They used methods such as bombings and air raids to try and

defeat the

Americans. In 14 the US turned the tables by island hoping and soon started

to

drive the Japanese back into Japan. In 144 Japan started losing really bad

against

the Americans. They started to resort to suicidal banzai in attempts to kill as

many

of the Americans as possible. Some examples they did were driving explosive

filled

planes into air crafts and strapping bombs to themselves so when they were dead

the

bombs would still go off. The battle of Okinawa was the last step in the

island-hopping strategy before the invasion on Japan. In this battle Japanese

forces

continued to do suicidal things, but the American forces were too strong as they

won

their largest battle yet.

How Did The Americans Win The War

The war between the nations had been going on for 4 years. President Truman

wanted to

end this as quick as possible. He did not want to lose anymore men. The

president

and other important men decided that they would drop an atomic bomb on Japan. A

controversy was started as to what cities would be bombed. Kyoto and Tokyo were

first

selected for targets but weather conditions were not good enough, so they needed

other cities. In May of 145 America selected Hiroshima and Nagasaki to be

bombed.

They would bomb Hiroshima and ask for them to surrender and if they didnt they

would

bomb Nagasaki. The plan was approved and the first bomb was sent to go in a

plane

called Enola Gay which was named after the pilots mother. On August 6th 145,

816am,

at 6000 feet the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Total destruction was caused

but the

Japanese would not surrender. So then once again but on August th another

atomic

bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Again leaving nothing but destruction Japan

agreed to

surrender to the Americans. The agreement to surrender was on September 145.

Since this war Japan has been allowed to have any military forces at all.

Was It Necessary To Drop The Bomb On Japan

Some people say no and some say yes but no one will ever know if that was the

right

decision. Truman only had options to win the war, and they were continue

firebombing and blockade, an invasion or use the bomb. Truman wanted no more of

his

men gone so he chose the bomb as it would only risk to pilots lives. In the

battle on

Okinawa 48000 American souls were taken which also helped Truman to his

decision.

Many cities were selected to be bombed but Truman had to make a tough decision

as the

war had to be stopped. American forces knew that the bomb would have little

survivors, and cause total destruction. A lot of people today still ask this

same

question, but remember it was either us or them.

The character Harry potter, as portrayed in the book “Harry potter and the philosopher’s stone” is a perfect example of the value of the quest in literature. As the novel progresses from beginning to end, it is evident to the reader that there is a significant change in Harry. In the beginning of the novel, he is a shy, reserved boy with many inhibitions who doest know where he fits in anywhere. By the end of the novel, Harry is more confident and feels a sense of great accomplishment. He can finally live up to the hero status that the magical world has believed of him since he was a baby. Through Harry’s perilous quest for order, he found more than the philosophers stone itself. He found where he belongs, who his friends are, and a sense of courage and bravery that Harry never knew he had.

The story of Harry potter is one of a young boy trying to find his place in life in present day Britain. What separates Harry potter from any other protagonist in this literary genre, is the fact that 11 year old Harry potter is a wizard. While the premise of the book is very fantastic, the reader can easily relate to Harry’s everyday problems with family, friends and belonging, in a fantastic atmosphere. The story begins at the boring, ultra-ordinary, nothing-out-of-place, number 4 privet drive where an orphaned Harry lives in the cupboard under the stairs in the house owned by his horrible relatives. Harry does not fit in with his “ordinary” relatives, because mysterious things just happen around him, and he can’t explain why. Harry’s family consists of his rude, beefy, mustached Uncle Vernon, who loves making mean remarks about Harry. Aunt petunia, Harry’s late mother’s nosy sister, who has never failed to find wrong in Harry’s appearance. And their fat, brat of a son Dudley, whose greatest hobby is using Harry as a punching bag. While often been called a little angel by his indulgent mother, Dudley is often called a pig in a wig by Harry. Harry has lived with his awful relatives since he was an infant and has grown quite used to their mistreatment. Harry never knew his parents. The only reminder of his past with them is a scar in the shape of a lightening bolt on his forehead, led his whole life to believe that he is the good for nothing product of his irresponsible parents who died the car crash that left him with it. On the night of Harry’s 11th birthday, life as he knows it is shattered. Rubeus Hagrid, keeper of grounds and keys at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is sent by headmaster Dumbledore to inform Harry that he is a wizard, and everyone in the magical world knows his name. Harry is finally told the truth about his past, after his aunt and uncle tried for so many years to keep it from him. Harry’s parents were a well respected witch and wizard, who were killed by the evil, dark lord Voldemort at the height of his power, when Harry was a baby. Voldemort had killed innumerable people during his reign of terror, but for some inexplicable reason, after killing Harry’s parents with one curse, when he turned his wand on to Harry, he was destroyed, at the height of his rise to power, voldemort was reduced to something barely alive, when All Harry was left with was a scar. He couldn’t kill baby Harry potter. The entire magical community celebrated and credited Harry with the down fall of lord voldemort. Dumbledore believed that the best place for Harry to live until he was old enough to attend Hogwarts School was with the Dursleys, where Harry would live a regular life, out of the limelight, until his 11th birthday.

Harry, hearing the truth for the first time in his life, is finding it very hard to believe. He has been led to believe his whole life that he was nothing. All of a sudden, he finds out that he’s famous, for something he doesn’t even remember. Until it dawns on him, it finally makes sense. The mysterious happenings around him, his hair growing back one night exactly the way it was before aunt petunia had cut it all off. The time he somehow found himself on the rooftop, out of harms way when Dudley was chasing him one day at school. The feeling of familiarity he felt with odd people, complete strangers. It all made sense now. Harry realizes that he never will belong at privet drive. He is a wizard and His place is at Hogwarts. Suddenly the tone of the book changes. The reader is transported with Harry from a boring, monotonous setting, to one of fantasy that takes place in a world where magic is real and the unimaginable becomes an everyday occurrence. Harry potter begins his journey at Hogwarts.
